Tsahik of the Tawkami clan, and the mother of the girls from the posts below - Tsi'in!
fancast ref for myself more than anything
Silwanin:
Rosario Dawson. Hear me out; she's of Puerto Rican, Cuban, and African ancestry, a pretty good visual match to Neytiri/Zoe Saldaña who is three-quarters Dominican and one-quarter Puerto Rican. While Paul Frommer is the true creator of the Na'vi language, Zoe was given some choice by James Cameron to be the deciding factor for the way it sounds on screen and I believe that the fact that Zoe knew another language besides English lends a pretty deep hand into how it sounds on screen. I would keep that trend and cast Silwanin to match Neytiri closely, including in their way of working through unfamiliar pronunciations.
Lo'ak:
Lonnie Chavis. doesn't look like Lo'ak's actor but he does look like his Na'vi character, and personally i would have preferred if James Cameron had casted, uh, any POC person for Lo'ak and Neteyam's roles.
Neteyam:
Dakota Beavers. I shan't explain.
Tom Sully BUT Only in Avatar/Recom form:
Going off of the fact that im slightly faceblind and I thought this guy WAS Sam Worthington for years lol; Garret Hedlund. he's a bit younger than Sam Worthington but if he exists purely behind a recom face that is taken from Sam's, this could work in my mind. Similar facial proportions and Garrett can easily pull off sassy - idk about like, intellectual, which is what Tom would have had to have been to be a PHD at that age. Alternatively:
Charlie Hunnam, similar thinking as Garrett, similar facial proportions, uhh, i genuinely thought all three of these men were the same guy for several years. anyway it would be fine as long as its in the recom/avatar face.
Jake Sully recast:
this one is purely for visuals bc as far as i know this person doesn't act. Ziggy Ramo. main gripe is the lips are too lucious (good for him) but he has the heavy upper eyelid that Sam Worthington has, and a similar eye/cheekbone area. Ziggy Ramo is Aboriginal Australian/Solomon Islander/Scottish; I decided on an Australian Aboriginal face due to Sam Worthington being Australian.
...hmm...just thinkin' about an Avatar "no angst" AU, y'know, like an AU where the characters who died in the first movie just...didn't? For example...
• Tsu'tey and Sylwanin are both alive and well. They officially tied the knot not long after the point when Sylwanin would've died in canon, and already have a child together by the time Jake arrives on Pandora.
• Eytukan also lives and therefore he and Mo'at are still leading the clan, though of course Tsu'tey and Sylwanin are next in line.
• Because the schoolhouse incident never happened in this AU, Grace was never kicked out of the village; her school is still running and she is on good terms with the Omatikaya.
• The RDA is overall less psychotic than they are in canon, and the Avatar Program has been largely successful in establishing diplomacy with the local clans. There is still some level of tension between the humans and the Na'vi of course, because the humans are ultimately still there to mine unobtainium and the Na'vi would prefer there was no mining at all, but in this AU the RDA is at least principled enough to not do things like bulldoze the Tree of Voices or bomb Hometree etc. (so, Hometree is still standing). Jake was never asked to spy on the Na'vi.
• Grace is actually the one to introduce Jake to Neytiri when she brings Jake and Norm along to the school one day. Neytiri is intrigued by the goofy non-scientist "warrior" dreamwalker and Jake finds himself equally intrigued by her; they begin spending more and more time together, and when Jake expresses curiosity about her way of life Neytiri just naturally kinda takes it upon herself to teach him the ways of the clan.
• Because Neytiri is neither tsakarem nor engaged to Tsu'tey in this AU, her romance with Jake is not quite as ~forbidden~ as it was in canon (and honestly they make zero effort to hide their feelings; the whole clan knows lol). The only remaining barrier is the fact that he's a dreamwalker and how that may affect things.
• Jake and Neytiri fall head over heels for each other about as fast as they do in canon; after three months Jake is already fully convinced that he wants remain with Neytiri and the clan for the rest of his life rather than ever go back to Earth, where there is nothing left for him. Even getting the spinal surgery to fix his legs no longer holds any interest for him, since of course his avatar body can walk just fine.
• By that point Neytiri begs Mo'at and Eytukan to let Jake do the coming-of-age ceremonies and become part of the clan so they can become mates. Mo'at and especially Eytukan are hesitant, but Mo'at consults Eywa and Eywa sends a sign of approval, so they allow it. Jake spends about an extra month preparing more specifically for Iknimaya and Uniltaron, and soon after completing those he and Neytiri actually get to have a proper mating ceremony. Jake does go through the permanent consciousness transfer at some point, though I haven't yet come up with the exact circumstances there...
• The Sully kids get to have more extended family! Grandpa Eytukan, Uncle Tsu'tey, and Aunt Sylwanin are all still around, along with a handful of cousins (Tsu'tey's and Sylwanin's kids).
• Quaritch never shot Grace in this AU, which means she never had to undergo the attempted consciousness transfer, which means Kiri wasn't conceived the way she was in canon. Buuuuuut I still want Kiri as part of the Sully family, so in this AU she is Jake and Neytiri's biological daughter and Neteyam's twin. She doesn't have the special Eywa powers that she has in canon, but does still have a spiritually-minded personality, and is a strong candidate for next tsakarem after Sylwanin. Grace still adores and dotes on her, especially when she shows interest in botany.
• Norm and Trudy are happy in a long-term relationship.
• There was no Battle at the Hallelujah Mountains, therefore Paz didn't die and was still around to raise Spider (undecided on how involved Quaritch was though).
• I like to imagine that in this AU Paz and Trudy are good friends, both being pilots and all. It's through Trudy that Paz and Spider become involved with folks from the Avatar program and Spider meets the Sully kids.
• Because she doesn't have the RDA-related traumas she has in canon, Neytiri is totally chill with Spider in this AU. She is mostly just curiously amused by the strange little human boy running around with his Na'vi friends.
• Spider is semi-trilingual English/Spanish/Na'vi. English is his go-to since everyone he knows can speak it, but he can also do some Spanish (Paz and maybe Trudy's influence) and quite a lot of Na'vi (Omatikaya influence, though Norm was thrilled to help when he caught wind that Spider was interested in learning). Sometimes he (subconsciously) mixes up a combination of any two or even all three and spews out mishmash sentences no one else understands immediately and has to stop and re-word.
• Because Quaritch is not the Big Bad Evil Guy the way he is in canon, Spider isn't really bothered by being called Miles. However, the nickname "Spider" somehow just stuck when he was very young so most people still call him that; it's mostly just Paz (and Quaritch) who call him Miles.
• Jake is not Toruk Makto in this AU, because with the RDA being more cooperative/less aggressive, he never needed to be. He and Neytiri are just normal (albeit well-liked/respected) hunters in the clan. Perhaps eventually a day will come when Toruk Makto is needed and Jake will have some reason to step up...but not yet. He's perfectly content being just a regular clan member.
• This has the side-effect of lessening Neteyam and Lo'ak's dramatic stunts as teenagers, because the legacy they're trying to live up to is simply "strong respectable hunter" rather than "legendary olo'eyktan Toruk Makto"
• Ok expanding on a previous point: when Neytiri begs Mo'at to induct Jake into the clan and Mo'at goes to consult Eywa, Eywa tells her that the dreamwalker can become one of the People IF he is willing to give up his human body forever (there can be no going back, as his human body will die when the soul is transferred) by passing though her Eye. Needless to say Jake sees this as an absolute win and agrees immediately.
• ....unfortunately this did cause a huge legal hassle for Grace because what in the flip flap kind of paperwork do you need to fill out to say "my employee's body is dead but he isn't dead his soul has just been moved into the company biorobot permanently by an alien goddess and also he doesn't really wanna work here anymore he's gonna live with the alien clan now k thx"
• Speaking of Jake's human body, Neytiri has met him in it a few times—not many, but a few. She got curious about it one day and Jake invited her up to the link shack to see it. She was very surprised to learn that he couldn't walk in that body, and he tells her about being a "warrior" back on Earth and how he was injured in battle. Neytiri feels sympathetic, but Jake tells her that he doesn't like being pitied for it, so she just tells him she's impressed he even survived such an injury at all. Jake smiles a bit but shrugs it off as "medical technology".
• Tsu'tey and Sylwanin have three children: a son, Reynuk, and two daughters, Eylora and Syo'al (I wanted to keep the o'a theme going lol...Mo'at, Lo'ak, Syo'al hrh). Mo'at and Eytukan adore their seven grandkids very much.
• Reynuk is the oldest, and was just over a year old when Jake first arrived on Pandora. Eylora is roughly a year younger than Lo'ak (about four years younger than her brother), and Syo'al is pretty much right in-between Eylora and Tuk.
• Neteyam is still overall the golden boy because author nepotism, sorry lol, but Reynuk can certainly give him a run for his money. The two of them are very close.
• Because Jake never became olo'eyktan, Ateyo and Artsut (Tsu'tey's parents, for those who haven't read the comics) never tried to assassinate him, and thus neither they nor Arvok (Tsu'tey's younger brother) were ever banished from the clan and are still around. Artsut is lowkey (ok probably highkey) bitter that Rongloa kids tend to consider Mo'at the better grandma ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
• Because Arvok is still in the clan, the Rongloa kids might have more cousins on the other side of the family if he decides to take a mate, though they'd be closer to Syo'al and Tuk's age since Arvok was still a teenager when Reynuk is born.
• Trudy and Norm might ending up with their own little one at some point hmmmm we shall see 👀
This is adorable, i love the whole idea! And yeah, if RDA was less pushy about the conflict with na'vi and more interested in just digging their neat little hole instead without looking at the deposit under the Kelutral, this could have been the way the story would have gone.
Big hrh to the paperwork Grace has to fill in, though i suppose that she could have make it sound as if Jake became a new spin on the idea of TAP. Which also could have gone a different route. And sure, disasters happen, some old conflict could have left a bunch of sarentu kids alone in the forest with RDA taking a questionable interest in raising them, but hey. It could have worked if Mercer didn't jump in in the middle of that class Alma was doing, being an absolute ass.
Ok, now I'm imagining Jake showing up in the facility as a guest, talking to young sarentu as someone in a similar situation coming from the opposite side. Kind of a child of both worlds like them.
hmmm, I hadn't even considered how TAP might be affected 👀 I suppose if part of the premise is that the RDA isn't committing the big atrocities then Mercer will have never wiped out the Sarentu so...
• TAP exists but on a voluntary basis, no murder or kidnapping involved. Canonically the Sarentu were travelers who spent time living with and learning the ways of several different clans, so perhaps in this AU where humans and Na'vi are on better terms with each other, TAP was seen as kind of an extension of that; a few Sarentu went to live with and learn from the humans for a while the same way they often did with other clans.
• for some reason part of me is lowkey wanting to ship Aha'ri and Nor in this AU?? obviously it wouldn't work in canon because Aha'ri was killed when they were all still children but...in this AU where she lives and grows up....hmmm 👀
• I imagine Aha'ri would actually be pretty open to learning about the humans in this AU, since here they didn't, y'know, genocide her clan, kidnap her, or try to strip her of her heritage. She's very clever and strong-willed but is not afraid to push back if someone starts spewing BS; she is simultaneous Alma's favorite and least favorite student because on the one hand she picks up on everything very quickly but on the other hand trying to convince her of anything that may violate Na'vi values is very difficult.
• Nor is more skeptical about visiting TAP instead of another Na'vi clan, but he goes anyways because Aha'ri is going. [player character] also goes to be with his/her sister.
• Ri'nela is curious but not as outspoken as Aha'ri; she's pretty quiet in class and such but could give anyone a very long very deep introspective analysis if asked, which the Sarentu value when she returns to the moot to share what she's learned.
• Teylan is of course fascinated with all the human stuff. Though he is more in-tune with his Na'vi side than he is in canon, since he was still raised with his clan, he is totally captivated by the RDA's technology and isn't really sure he wants to leave and stop learning about it. Similar enthusiasm for human stuff to canon but minus the whole stockholm syndrome part.
(hmm....makes me wonder...I know that Jake is canonically unaware of TAP's existence, but what about Grace? As the head of the Avatar program, surely she'd be aware that Alma is out doing some sort of project with Mercer? hmm...though granted, this is an AU so I guess it doesn't matter whether or not canon!Grace knows....hmm...I shall think about it more.)
Alrighty, speaking of Na'vi/human relations, a bit more about Spider!
• Spider has a stronger connection to his human side than his canon counterpart does due to his close relationship with Paz, so he is more comfortable wearing human clothes and whatnot. Occasionally he'll wear a Na'vi-style loincloth as he does in canon, but he's also decently likely to be spotted in normal human clothes, or sometimes a cross between the two: removing his shirt but keeping human-style shorts instead of the loincloth, or wearing the loincloth but with his shirt still on.
• Spider wants to grow his hair long like his Na'vi friends, but Quaritch wants him to keep it clipped short military-style. Paz convinces Quaritch to compromise by letting him have a longer but still reasonably "boyish" (by human standards of course) style. Spider likes to decorate his hair with feathers and beads given to him by his Omatikaya buddies, wanting to match Lo'ak and Kiri. Quaritch thinks this is cringe but Paz thinks it's cute.
• Age-wise he is still born at the same point he was in canon, which puts him right in-between Reynuk and Neteyam (leaning slightly closer to Reynuk I think). The doodle above depicts him in the same time frame as the grandkids doodle in my previous reblog, which would make him around 10 or so.
• I am undecided whether Norm and Trudy are actually married in this AU. I'd like to think that they want to be, but am not sure whether there's anyone available on Pandora who can actually legally officiate that 😅 Perhaps Norm will try asking Jake and Neytiri to convince Mo'at to do a Na'vi-style ceremony for them, if the human methods aren't available...
• That said, they do have one daughter, Maria, born in late 2159 (about five years after Jake and Norm arrive on Pandora). While there are a small handful of other human children born on Pandora as there are in canon, Maria and Spider are the only ones as interested in/involved with the Avatar Program and the Na'vi. Spider enjoys having another human in his mostly-Na'vi little friend group, though because she is nearly six years younger than him they don't often play one-on-one together. He thinks of her as an honorary little sister/cousin.
• Maria is the only person who can reliably understand Spider's occasional trilingual outbursts. As she gets older the two of them definitely incidentally develop a number of English/Spanish/Na'vi slang terms that only they fully understand (though some of the words have rubbed off on Kiri and Lo'ak, who are indeed still Spider's best friends in this AU).
• It's not immediately obvious in the doodle above because she's so young, but Maria has inherited her dad's tall lanky genes. She starts shooting up fast when she hits her first growth spurts and it actually makes Spider a bit nervous at first—he's long since accepted that he'd always be much shorter than his Na'vi friends, but if his human friend ends up taller than him too? That would drive him crazy lol. But much to his relief, in the end she doesn't quite reach his height (though she does get a fair bit taller than her mom).
• No, Spider and Maria never become a ship in the future, sorry; I'll admit the idea was mildly tempting, but in the end I think they just grew up with far too much of a sibling-esque relationship to ever consider each other romantically 😅
• Spider is lowkey jelly that Maria's name transfers so cleanly into Na'vi phonetics (it's pretty much unchanged), whereas he has to be "Spaytrr" or "Maylsì". Little does he know that Norm very much chose such a name on purpose lol, knowing that his daughter would probably end up spending a lot of time with the Na'vi kids and wanting to give her an easy name
• When playing, the kids naturally tend to split up into an older group (Reynuk, Spider, Neteyam, Kiri, and Lo'ak) and a younger group (Maria, Syo'al, and Tuk). Eylora tends to fluctuate between these two groups; age-wise she's closer to the older group, but her very gentle personality makes her uninterested in some of the wild shenanigans the older kids tend to get into; the younger girls' games are more her speed. Plus a part of her just enjoys getting to "babysit" the younger kids.
• There is a bit of debate over who should become the next tsakarem once Sylwanin becomes tsahìk. As Sylwanin's eldest daughter, Eylora would be the traditional choice, and her gentle nurturing personality would be well suited to the role. However, there are a handful of clan members who argue that perhaps it should be Kiri, who may not be Sylwanin's daughter but she is still Mo'at's granddaughter and has shown a remarkable natural affinity for the spiritual. Neither Eylora nor Kiri are quite sure how they feel about this just yet, but that's ok...Mo'at still has plenty of time as tsahìk yet, so no decisions need to be made anytime soon.
• Because the RDA never murdered Sylwanin in this AU, Tsu'tey is a lot less bitter towards the humans and, subsequently, towards Jake. He snorts a bit when Sylwanin tells him about how her sister totally has a crush on the dreamwalker, but as he watches Neytiri start to train Jake he finds himself forming a grudging respect for his tenacity and openness to their way of life. They start to become friends and eventually Tsu'tey becomes something of a second mentor to Jake, a sort of older brother figure that makes Jake ache for Tommy.
• ...y'know, since the crux of this AU is that the really traumatic stuff that happened on Pandora didn't happen, but half of Jake's traumas (going to war, becoming paralyzed, loosing his brother) happened back on Earth and thus still exist in this AU....Jake has suddenly skyrocketed to most traumatized character. sorry Jake 😩 it's ok though, Neytiri is there to help him work through it
• Randomly bouncing back to the AFoP stuff: while Ri'nela doesn't speak up a whole lot in TAP, one skill she absolutely adores having learned is reading. She absolutely devours every book Alma gives her and is determined to start writing books in Na'vi, be it recordings of traditional Sarentu stories, the stories of other clans she's visited, or even new tales she writes herself. long story short, Ri'nela ends up introducing the concept of written language to the Na'vi as a whole
Continuation from this post where i was musing about Na'vi biodiversity as a species and how environment might affect them, I thought I would draw them out while i took some notes on what I thought might change/be different among Na'vi.
Again these are all just headcanons and excuses for me to draw more ocs lol, but i would love to hear what people think!
Just incase people dont want to attempt to read my handwriting (or if tumblr eat the quality of the pic too much) Im gonna type up my notes below. (Also elaborating on some of the notes some more)
Na'vi Stripes Tutorial!
Tagging @eywaschild891, in case you were still interested in this! (note: this tutorial is about the digital process of adding the stripes, not actually designing the patterns)
I'm using MediBang Paint Pro, but this technique should work in any program that supports layers.
So you've drawn your Na'vi and now you want to add some stripes! First we'll have to start with a base color. Underneath your lineart layer, add two new layers: one as the main base color layer (for coloring hair, eyes, clothes, etc), and on top of that, a separate layer for the skin. Putting the skin on a separate layer is important because that way you'll be able to do the stripes as a clipping mask.
Your layer box should look something like this (you can ignore the gray background and extra folder, they're not important for this tutorial):
Now we can start on the base stripe layer. Create a new layer and set it as a clipping mask on your skin layer. This makes it so that you can't "color outside the lines", so to speak, while drawing the stripes. Then take a hard-edged brush and start drawing the patterns you want. I like to use MediBang's "mapping pen", which has a subtly textured edge, but the regular default Pen tool will work perfectly fine as well.
If you'd like, you can stop here and call this done: solid stripes are perfectly acceptable in a cartoonified stylization. However, if you look closely at Na'vi stripes on canon characters, you'll note that they're not completely solid: they have a subtle fading effect, where they're darker along the edges and a bit lighter in the middle, and in some places they fade out into the body. Sometimes it almost looks watercolor-ish.
(I'm sure there are better examples out there than these but I'm not up to digging for them rn 😅)
So, let's continue! To fade our stripes, create another clipping mask layer above the main stripe layer. Use a brush with pressure-based opacity such as MediBang's "pencil" to loosely fill the insides of the stripes with the base skin color.
Once you have filled in all the stripes, use the gaussian blur filter to smooth out the fade. The filter doesn't need to be super strong—in fact, if you make it too strong you will loose the detail and the stripes will look solid again. With MediBang's version of the tool, I had it set to 7 (out of a max of 64) for this image, though of course the way it works may be different in other programs; mess around with different settings until you get something you like.
(sadly I do not have a screenshot of the blurred version because apparently the way my cintiq takes screenshots is dumb; it only captured the "gaussian blur" popup window instead of the whole screen. oh well. :P)
Now that we have the fade within the stripes, let's also make them fade into the rest of the body. The areas you'll want to do this with are the torso, inner arms, and inner/back of legs.
Create another clipping mask. Using the same pressure-opacity brush and base skin color as before, loosely block in where you want the stripes to fade into the body.
Once you've finished, gaussian blur the layer just like before. This one can be a little stronger than the inside-stripe one. For this image I had it set to 14.
Sometimes, the areas you block out will overlap with areas that shouldn't be faded—for example, here the fading from the back of the character's thigh is overlapping with her tail. To fix this, just erase it to remove the fade from where it shouldn't be (this is why we do this step on separate layers). Make sure you do this erasing after you've applied the gaussian blur.
Depending on the pose of your character, there may be places where one faded area overlaps with another. For example, in this drawing, the blocking for the arm fading overlaps with the blocking for the torso fading. Here it is with the torso fading turned off so you can see the overlap:
This makes it difficult to do both the arm and the torso on the same layer, because I won't be able to remove where the arm fading overlaps the torso fading without also removing the actual torso fading.
Luckily, there's a simple fix: just do the arm fading on a separate layer. Do this as many times with as many layers as you need to for your particular pose. Sometimes you'll only need one or two, like here; other times you'll need several.
BUT, fading the stripes is the last step! Regardless of how many layers you end up needing, once you're done, you're done! Now you have a Na'vi with nice natural-looking striping 😸
At this point you can go ahead and merge all the clipping masks into the main skin layer and even merge the skin layer with the other-base-colors layer if you're ready!
Hopefully that wasn't too hard to follow; feel free to ask if anything is confusing or unclear. Happy drawing! 😸
Speedpaint + quick tut on how I do Na'vi skin/stripes with video and screenshots
Here's the video to go along, but I'll go step by step with screenshots
We start with a base layer for the skin. I make a clip layer on top and be sure to also fill it the same base blue, because otherwise the blending properties of the brushes won't apply.
This is meant to be low detail so I won't give it too much colour, but I make the throat and centre of the face lighter, the eyes and ears pink/redder.
Then it's time to decide on light direction/angle and how it affects geometry. Doing a little of that really helps, but you don't have to paint the way I did there... Got lost in the sauce.
Add another clip layer on top, set it to multiply, and get started.
There are many ways to do stripes. I do mine entirely by hand, in a style of painting and erasing with the same brush but inverted. It's a lot like sculpting. Doing everything by hand guarantees a lack of uniformity. See the video for this step.
Now that I'm happy with the look I have, I UNCLIP the layer of stripes, revealing the places I went beyond the skin. That's fine.
Add a layer on top of Stripes. Clip it to stripe.
Right click on Stripe layer. Click "selection from layer > create selection"
Now you have a bar under the selection with shortcuts we're going to use.
Reduce the selection. The amount of pixels depends on the size of your drawing. Play around!
Now inverst the selection. So you're not drawing inside of it but outside of it only.
Select the multiply layer on top of the Stripes.
Paint in! In the reference above I used a deep purple to highlight what it should look like, but obviously you want a light blue.
Tweak colour and transparency of that layer as needed!
Then I use a blur brush (I prefer Maablur Brush, it's free iirc), and the soft eraser, in various areas so it's not entirely uniform.
See what the stripes look like on these people :
Q is quite dark with less light inside some sections. Meanwhile Neteyam has a very thin dark lining around his face stripes :
They're generally pretty desaturated. Body stripes also seem to be much more blurry in general :
Anyway, MERGE that multiple layer to the Stripe layer. CLIP the Stripe layer back to the skin.
Now it's time to erase or blur as you wish. I tend to erase around the nose, cheeks and throat.
Even Metkayina have that erased quality :
I add sanhi on a layer set to "add glow" and pick a teal colour. I either do it manually in pencil or with a dot brush.
Final tweaks of saturation and transparency, maybe playing around with "add" or "multiply" layers for quick highlights on top of everything or deeper shadows.
That's it! That's how I always do stripes, no matter how rendered the skin underneath. Elias needs more work before he's done, but it's a good preview, I hope.
my struggle is when i have plus size OCs and i put em in avatar au and have to de-yassify them ((´д`)) like murray is usually quite a chonky guy. i've done my best/worst i guess. these were also all drawn in 2022 so i hadn't gotten the grasp of how i wanted to draw the na'vi bodies yet

Loren was part of a northern science exploration team but her team were forgotten and left behind during the first war on Pandora. Loren and Zuayamkì formed a deep friendship (😜) and Zuayamkì taught her the ways of Northern Pandoran life
(I haven’t thought of a name for her clan yet, if there are far northern clans that already exist I’d love to hear about them :) )
