#early riser #hibernation does very much come with its own problems in the book #(not for nothing bears have to fatten up *massively* before hibernating because that's their entire energy source for the winter)#but that is the premise the whole story is structured around

Hm, considering how in Lovecraft's work magic is eventually revealed to be a kind of high specialised maths than enables folk to bend space-time, I'm surprised that it's not used as a launching point for more Lovecraftian cyberpunk stories?

Like, there have been stories that use the Eldritch Maths detail to make the leap to computing, with Charles Stross' Laundry books using it as a feature in the setting (with Alan Turing accidentally bridging the gap between sorcery and computers in the back story) and with the Atomic Robo storyline The Shadow from Beyond Time involving an accidentally evil quantum computer becoming an atemporal eldritch beastie, I've just curious if the concept has been carried over into a straight cyberpunk setting?

For example, if in a setting where the Lovecraft adjacent stuff is real, you could, say, have a Megacorp's study of the Necronomicon be their basis for "inventing" faster-than-light travel due to their time and space-bending properties demonstrated in novels such as the Dreams in the Witch House.

A rival organisation, however, doesn't know that the corp is using literal magic, and in their attempt to hire a team for what they assume is just standard industrial espionage results in things going horribly wrong when the resulting heist makes things get weird... wyrd even.

Then you could have things like some corporate guy having the bright idea to feed actual books of magic into a GenAI thing, and how the resulting fallout affects things. All kinds of possibilities for TTRPG campaign settings and so on.

ESPECIALLY if you don't tell the players about the supernatural stuff in advance, so they think that it's going to be the standard cyberpunk setting, only for them to suddenly have to deal with literal wizards (not in a Shadowrun way, that's more of a conventional fantasy dealie in a cyberpunk setting to my understanding).

Considering how both modern cosmic horror and cyberpunk trace their originals to mid-twentieth century pulp fiction (something they said with noir) there's a lot of overlap that I think it could be fun to explore.
