Another friendly reminder that the United States used 1,000 calorie diets as torture for political prisoners and justified it using the diet industry.

In a footnote to a May 10, 2005, memorandum from the Office of Legal Council, the Bush attorney general’s office argued that restricting the caloric intake of terrorist suspects to 1000 calories a day was medically safe because people in the United States were dieting along those lines voluntarily.

“While detainees subject to dietary manipulation are obviously situated differently from individuals who voluntarily engage in commercial weight-loss programs, we note that widely available commercial weight-loss programs in the United States employ diets of 1000 kcal/day for sustain periods of weeks or longer without requiring medical supervision,” read the footnote. “While we do not equate commercial weight loss programs and this interrogation technique, the fact that these calorie levels are used in the weight-loss programs, in our view, is instructive in evaluating the medical safety of the interrogation technique.”

Another another friendly reminder that the Minnesota Starvation Experiment subjected adult men who were VOLUNTEERS to 1,560 calorie diets and the psychological effects were so profound that one volunteer cut three of his own fingers off and could not remember why.

These men were volunteers who knew exactly what they would be going through and when it would end, and who believed they were doing it for a good and moral reason (the research was used to help rehabilitate victims of starvation and famine at the end of WWII).

And these are the things we are expected to engage in FOREVER to stay at a “healthy” weight.

Reading about the Minnesota Starvation experiment was my wake-up call.  It was what kicked me out of my eating disorder.  The guy missing three fingers, whatever his name was, he was the last straw for me.

Scared me so fucking bad I stopped restricting my food that day, and never went back to it.

I work at a coffee shop and have gotten all my co-workers to start calling lattes “hot milkybois”

I also got everyone to refer to the salted caramel blended drink as “the big salty” and I consider it one of my greatest accomplishments

Oh yeah and any time someone orders a hazelnut latte with almond milk (which specifically is a weirdly popular drink) I say “one HOT NUT latte coming right up!”

My coworkers have not latched on to this one like they did with the others for some reason.

Our largest drink size is affectionately referred to as “Texas Size” so sometimes when I hand it out in the drive-thru I like to say, “Here’s that TEXAS SIZE [drink] for ya, YEEEEHAW!”

And some people look at me as though I have just made their entire day while others look like they they could not possibly get away from me soon enough. Both reactions are equally satisfying.

I made this into a game except when I hand out the Texas-size drinks I say “Can I get a YEEHAW?” And the guests always look mortified but occasionally one of them will let out a terrified “yeehaw” and all my coworkers cheer and then we keep a running tally of how many yeehaws we each get on the back of a pastry bag.

The fact that so many people have left their pets behind in the California fires is so horrifying.

You are all your pets have. They depend on you,  they trust you, they are your family. Please don’t leave them behind. Clothes, computers, etc. can be replaced. Your family can’t.

The fire came quick and a lot of people weren’t prepared or warned before they had to leave.

People died because they didn’t escape fast enough and I don’t think we can fault anyone for not staying and looking for their cat before running.

Many people had time to round up their large and small animals, but not everyone was that lucky. A lot of people in Paradise work outside of the town in neighboring cities, and by the time they heard about the fire the town was already evacuating. My mom’s friend had to leave her cat behind and she’s not nearly as upset about her apartment being gone as she she is about not knowing what happened to her cat.

Please don’t assume that most people didn’t do everything they could, and don’t berate the people who lost pets because they didn’t have enough warning.

If you live in an area where wildfires are a known risk, you should have a plan to get your pets out safely. I live in an area that is 100% safe from environmental issues and I have many precautions in place to protect my cats should anything happen. Frankly, I would double back if I had to to go pick up my pets, because when I adopted them, I committed to protecting them, no matter what the circumstance. I don’t get to pick and choose when I adhere to that commitment.

I understand that some people were away from home when they had to evacuate. Fine. Call a neighbour to collect your pet if you can. I certainly would make sure to collect a friend or neighbour’s pet if they asked. I also understand the difficulty of transporting horses, cows, etc. and I appreciate that in some cases, the only option their owners had was to set them loose and hope they could run fast enough. I understand that some people literally had to run for it and leave their packed cars behind- but pets/carry cases fit in your arms, dogs can be leashed and run with you. I physically could not leave my cats behind in a car that I knew would be on fire five minutes later. That said, this was more directed at people who chose to leave their pets behind.

What horrifies me most is people who have pets going, “Oh, it’s fine, I’ll just get another one if mine doesn’t survive.” People who think like that should not be pet owners (and there’s a lot of that on twitter right now, so don’t say its not happening).

It’s a horrible situation, but there are very few legitimate excuses for leaving your pets behind. If you were at work and your child was home alone, you would go back to get your child, wouldn’t you? You wouldn’t leave your child trapped to burn to death in a car or a house, would you? Rescue organizations have been able to safely go into abandoned houses and save pets left behind, so there isn’t much excuse for the owners of those pets not taking them with them.

You can’t drive back into town to get your animals if the roads into town are blocked or converted into one way roads for the mass of people evacuating.

It’s tragic and it’s easy to say that people didn’t plan well enough or try hard enough, but a lot of good people who do care had to make tough life or death decisions under immense pressure.

Maybe some of them are shrugging their shoulders and saying they don’t care and that they can just buy a new dog or whatever, but those aren’t the views I have seen expressed from the evacuees I know.

She got torn up by a boat propeller off New South Wales in 2001 and proceeded to walk it off. Swim it off. Whatever. The scars from the propeller slices healed ~20cm deep down her back and across her tail fluke. Since then, whale watchers down under look for “the Blade Runner” every year. Just the sight of her starts conversations about whether we humans should reconsider being such gigantic floppy penises to our rad cetacean bros.
