Trip to Barbican - April 2018
A visit to the Barbican Centre to observe and photography to brutalist style of architecture the buildings were designed in. The somewhat aggressive and rough looking building also maintain a clean and concise appearance, with uniformity and repeated shapes that makes the site such a photogenic place.
Saatchi Gallery and Tate Britain -
A visit to the Saatchi Gallery where modern and contemporary art is on display, as well as the Tate Britain. Both featured a lot of sculpture and contemporary installation pieces.
Trip to Berlin - March 2018
During a trip to Berlin I visited a few galleries including the German Guggenheim museum and an open air community run site called Teufelsberg, which was a former spy base during the Cold War, and now hosts artists and designers to come and graffiti on the walls. The view from the roof of the base looks over the entirety of Berlin with panoramic views, and access to the old radio signal domes which echo when you speak.
Belittle Me - Putting your self doubt in perspective.
‘Belittle Me’s’ are bespoke miniature personalised dolls designed for people who experience self doubt. They function at the push of a button and help to people to observe their belittling thoughts in a different and external perspective.
It is proven that self-deprecating humour can actually have positive effects on people’s self-esteem. We therefore decided to take people insecurities, make a miniature version of them, and make the ways in which they belittle themselves teeny-weeny so that these could no longer be taken seriously.
Discrete Mayonnaise -
The eating of large quantities of mayonnaise without people realising. I have mayonnaise with pretty much everything I eat and am constantly judged for it, therefore I made food that have mayonnaise in the middle of it so that from the exterior it looks like a completely normal unmayofied meal.
Dotwork forest card design I created for my mum on mother’s day. Took over 8 hours to complete, could have gone longer but ran out of time oops.
Homes & Gardens -
Room design for the ‘Homes & Gardens’ brief. We were given the dining room, and decided that the dining room table was one of the most important aspects of the space.
We created a table that had a built in sound sensitive aspect connected to a speaker so that once the volume in the room gets above a certain level, a loud noise will play to break up arguments or fights that may be happening.
Ready or Not -
A personally interpreted typeset layout for the song 'Ready or Not' by the Fugees.I decided on indenting the lyrics on the first page at different amounts to show the pitch in which that part was sung. The more aligned to the left is the lower tones, and indented towards the right are the higher-pitched verses mainly sung by the female member of the group Lauryn Hill.
On the overleaf page is the score in which I decided to map out each beat of the song, represented by a grey dot, and its amount - small being the hi-hat beats, medium being the snare, and large to represent the kick drum. I added the timings of the lyrics in relation to these beats, laid out in correlation with each other true to the original version of the song. This page also includes bolder, heavier text for the amount of emphasis put on the words spoken.
Ology Orgy / Chipology
The ology of chips. We studied and deconstructed everything there was to do with chips, from size to shape to taste to appearance. We decided we would tailor to peoples chip size preference. Therefore you could ask for chips you thought of to be perfect size, and we would deliver them through the slot in the wall - somewhat like a bespoke chip delivery service.
Visual Thinking / Toilet Brush
General mark making and experimentation with creating visual pieces using predominantly a toilet brush.
Test Pattern / The Strand
During a visit to ‘The Strand’ in central London I encountered Ryoji Ikeda’s installation piece ‘Test Patten’. This piece used complicated AI technology to create patterns and music randomly generated by taking binary data from audio and visual stimuli. This is then transmitted through projectors onto a large floor and loud speakers play the confusing and disorientating music to go along with the visuals.
During the project ‘A Fine Line’ I focused on the topic of androgyny, and the fine line between genders. Using multiple exposure to overlay two portrait images, and making these images negative and black and white, I achieved an effect where the subject in the image is relative androgynous.
The person contained in the images is posing in a way where the posture and figure could be male or female - or a mix of both, either or neither. The overlaying of the faces makes the viewer try to decipher the images more than they would, and represents the fine line between what we define as either male or female.
During a trip to Sweden I visited the Modern Museet in Stockholm city. It featured a lot of contemporary artworks such as sculpture work including Marcel Duchamp’s urinal; as well as graphic design - much of which was from the soviet era and World War II.
Ice Cream Record Break Video
In our first core brief we worked in groups to come up with and attempt to beat a new or current world record. After days of idea generation and initial tests with other ideas we had, we decided on ‘Most number of ice cream scoops on an ice-cream cone’.
The current record was held by an Italian ice-cream man who managed to add 121 scoops to the cone. In our attempt we managed 123 scoops - 2 scoops more than the world record. Although hands were involved to get the sticky ice-cream off the scoopers we still think we beat it as it doesn't say anywhere in the rules that hands can't be involved.
Working against time was a challenge in this project as the ice-cream starts to melt very quickly especially inn a studio with bright lighting. We had two attempts and by the second attempt where we broke the record the ice-cream had melted quite a lot which made it much harder to scoop on and get to stay. As you can see from the initial picture of the record attempt the scoops had melted together, and it took over 20 minutes to add the 123 scoops that we did.
