reading a paper on quality of life among 45-to-70-year-olds with Down syndrome:
āIndividuals expressed a desire to be allowed to go to bed when they wanted to.ā
Imagine.
I lived in a room and board that failed the burrito test. (āIf youāre not allowed to getĀ up in the middle of the night to microwave a burrito, you live in an institution.ā) No one stopped me from going to bed, but they did tell me I had to have my lights out by 10, and that I had to be out of the house by 10 the next morning. When I complained to my outpatient program that I needed more help than I was getting, they threatened me with board and care, where my cell phone would be taken away and I would lose contact with the outside world. My case manager sounded so damn smug, like he had caught me out, when he said,Ā āif youāre really as helpless as you say, then you need to be in a board and care.ā Like my only options were struggling to do things I couldnāt do, or surrendering my life to an institution.
When I tried to talk about these things with other people, they always rationalized it away. (I told my dad once that my caseworker was reading my e-mails as I wrote them, demonstrating extreme disrespect for my privacy, and he said, āWell, sheās probably making sure you donāt use the internet to goof off.ā I was 22 years old.)
Ā People tend to mock the idea that telling an adult when to go to bed, when to eat, etc., is a human rights violation, even though they would find it outrageous and absurd if anyone came into their lives to do the same thing to them.
And this is what people seem to think when they tell disabled activists weāre just not disabled enough to understand that some people really do need to be locked up and deprived of all autonomy.
Hereās the paper:

This is horrible.

I love kids theyāre all like.. āwhen i grow up iām gonna be an astronaut and a chef and a doctor and an olympic swimmerā like that self confidence! That drive! That optimism! Where does it go
It gets destroyed by adults not believing in you and telling you to pick a realistic career. And by society creating all these obstacles to the point that youāre too tired to try.
But theyāre not really unrealistic, SOMEBODY is going to be an olympic swimmer and it might as well be you.
Actually I want to talk about this a little more than I did, because olympic swimming is incredible and works perfectly to talk about attaining goals.
I used to be a varsity swimmer, and I was damn good, but I was forced into it by my parents and completely lost my love for it and therein my drive. But in high school I was swimming against such talented swimmers like Olympic Swimmer Missy Franklin. Iāve met her, and the main difference between her and me was that I was strong but had no passion, but she was strong BECAUSE she had passion.Ā
And I could have been good, really good, maybe even Olympic good. I even have the predisposition for it, been swimming since I was 2 years old, have a mom who was almost an olympic swimmer. Missy didnāt have either of those things, she just wanted it, loved it, had been doing it for a long time, and decided she was going to kick ass at it.
Right, thatās great and all, but I completely missed my opportunity to be an olympic swimmer, yeah? and can never achieve those dreams I had as a kid? No, not even though. There was this whole thought that female athletes peak when theyāre 17 years old and lose their skills quickly after that, and male athletes peak around 19. But then Olympic Swimmer Dara Torres shows up. She was an olympic swimmer when she was 17, 21 and 25. Pretty normal age for retirement. She had a few kids. She kicked butt at being a mom.Ā
And then at 33 years old she decides sheās bored or something gets back in shape and kicks so much ass at the trials that she lands herself on the Olympic Team ONCE AGAIN. And then 8 years later, she decides, heck Iām 41 now, no one has ever made the olympic swim team as old as I am, I want to get in shape yet again and teach these children how sports work.
And she still has the record for oldest US Olympic Swimmer, not even any men have beat out that record.
So basically what Iām saying is you could be an olympic swimmer, you really could be. And there are obviously a lot of things stopping you and trying to get in your way: your brain, society, too much chocolate cake for example. But if you really dedicate yourself to it and love it with all of your heart you could, you really could.
And lets say olympic swimming isnāt your jam? Thatās cool too. There isnāt a single skill in this world that you canāt learn if you absolutely love it and want to. Any skill you want is going to take time. There are countless famous people who started learning a skill after 20, 30, 40, or even 50. Not a single person has even been president under age 35 (most likely because youāre not allowed to be, but thereās a reason for that). Whatever you want to do youāre probably going to be bad at first, and Iām talking really shitty.
Van Gogh got started in his 20ā²s and was thought to have no artistic talent at first and was forced to sit in the back of classrooms where the worst artists in the class sat. So yeah youāll probably be bad, like really bad and everyone including you will think youāre bad. If you stick with it though, if youāre willing to work for years and years, if you keep loving it after all the pain itās given you,Ā
then you might just paint Starry Night.
#looks like thereās still time for me to learn how to draw ⦠YES. As someone who started drawing at 35 and who always was like: āeh, I canāt draw a stick figure to save my life, but I would love to be able toā this is near and dear to my heart. If you want to draw, start drawing. Keep drawing. Be shit at drawing at first. Keep it up, doodle things on scraps but also draw stuff you donāt think you can draw. Challenge yourself, you will be surprised what you can do. It will be frustrating at times, but it will also be awesome. It is SO much a matter of practice and dedication, not talent.
This applies for writing, too.Ā Ā
Donāt ever think for a second that it doesnāt!Ā Want to start writing?Ā Then write!Ā You will get better the more you write, the more often, and you will improve, all of the time, as long as you dedicate yourself.Ā Ā
The worst lie we tell ourselves isĀ āitās too late.ā
someone explain the jewish holidays to me like i'm 5 years old
Purim: They tried to kill us, we survived. Letās tell the story, wear silly costumes, and get wasted. (Optional: have a carnival or a play!)
Passover: They enslaved us, God freed us. Remember this via a big ceremony/feast and then donāt eat bread for a week. This is a big one; youāre going to have to clean your house and host all your relatives.
Tu B'Shevat: Itās Earth Day, letās eat some fruit.
Simchas Torah: We read the entire Torah every year, and we got to the end! Letās have a dance party and then start all over again!
Tisha B'Av: They destroyed our temples. That sucked.
Rosh HaShanah: Happy New Year! Itās time to ask (and grant) forgiveness for the wrongs done in the past year, pledge to do better, and wish for a sweet new year. And go to synagogue for HOURS.
Yom Kippur: Rosh HaShanahās somber counterpart. God decides on this day your fate for the next year. Repent your sins, hope for forgiveness, and fast. (And go to synagogue for HOURS.)
Yom HaShoah: Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Sukkot: Harvest festival! Sleep in a hut under the stars.
Shemini Atzeret: Man, I donāt even know?
Shavuot: God gave us the Torah! That was pretty nice of him.
Chanukah: They busted up our temple and tried to forcibly convert us. We responded with guerilla warfare. Letās eat some fried food. Candles!
So basically the entire Jewish holiday calendar is giving the middle finger to death and high-fiving, with or without various combinations of prayer and foods.
Yup. Or as we say, āThey tried to kill us, we survived, letās eat.ā
thank you for the descās bcs they are beautiful and i am now educated
A handy table for everyone:
Yāall have no idea how happy it makes me to see my goyim followers reblogging this. Really. It means the world to me.
Oh SWEET, a table!
Cowboys Against Misgendering (CAM)
not to get mad nerdy but I just discovered tabletopaudio.com and Iām fuckin losing it
this person (people?) goes about making 10 minute long loopable ambient noise tracks for every imaginable setting (docks, taverns, forests, airships, spaceships, office buildings, sewers, EVERYTHING) and has over a hundred tracks to offer, and on top of that if none of them suit you thereās a huge feature called soundpad where you can mix and match from their set of hundreds of individual sound effects and music clips to make your own ambient background track
holy shit dudes
I did a little further reading on his about and the guy running this is just a dad with two kids who like playing tabletops with him and he had the composition and musical training to start making soundtracks for his games then decided to spread that to the world for absolutely free, he even welcomes you to use his tracks in your works (podcasts, videos etc) and is open to being hired for custom tracks
I love him
https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/kzqpd9/heres-an-insane-story-about-a-rogue-music-teacher-cutting-a-kids-hair
what the fuck
iām just gonna take this post for a moment so i can rant but like
i Hate how entitled adults can feel over a childās hair!
it started when i was young myself, i wanted a mohawk, but my dad didnāt approve of that look on a āgirlā, and insisted iād regret such a bold cut. at 16 i was finally given full autonomy over my own head.
but then i have a son and everyone around us is trying to keep his hair short. when we finally moved out just me my partner and him, i told him he doesnāt need to get any haircuts he doesnāt want.
so he starts growing it out, itās still short but coming on mid-length. his teacher makes a point to tell me itās getting long as if i donāt have eyes. i hear her walking out with him one day talking to him about haircuts, as if to coax him into one. eventually i get child services called on me for āforcing a transgender lifestyleā over what i can only assume is from a combination of me drawing cute ponies on his valentine box and letting him go to school in a ponytail.
he kept it short for awhile after but told me he wanted to grow it out again, so i let him of course. he comes home one day after getting a haircut at his grandpaās and tells me he didnāt Want the haircut.
i ask why he got it then and learned he was bribed with a promise of a surprise IF he cut his hair.
tl;dr people need to back the hell up off of children and let them have owership of whatās on THEIR body! /rant
Same thing about getting a child to curl or straighten their hair. Or do anything with it. Just let kids have control over their bodies.
This happened to me when I was little too!! Growing up I had naturally tight Shirley Temple curls. The only problem was that you canāt get a hair brush through it if your life depended on it until it grew out over a few years.
but This One Lady from church decided that leaving my hair messy and curly was child abuse and threatened to call social services on my family every damn time she saw me until one day she was the designated kid watcher and ho boy my momma tells me i came out with tears in my eyes and greasy slicked down hair and thatās where she ends the story because i think my mother beat her ass but yeah.
Leave kids hair alone.
Iām going to be honest, parents who are super-controlling of their childrenās hair creep me the fuck out and Iām not entirely certain why except that I get a vague feeling they kind of relegate them to, āannoying talking dollā status.
I loved my daughterās long blond hair. It was thick and wavy and beautiful but when she told me she wanted it cut shortĀ ālike a boyā(she was four)Ā I took her to the salon and let her whack it off.Ā
The stylist was skeptical, āare you sure?ā and the thing is, she said this to me, not my daughter. So I asked my girlĀ āare you sure you want it cut short?ā She was. The hair went. The stylist acted nervous most of the way through like she was waiting for one of us to burst into tears, but it looked cute! And my daughter loved it! (And itās been short ever since.)
Autonomy over your hair is bodily autonomy and we as a culture need to start holding bodily autonomy as sacred
there is a reason that so many of us whoāve experienced trauma will reclaim control over our bodies and our selves by cutting and dying our hair. itās part of us. itās part of our expression. thatās vitally important to people, especially kids, who are still early in the process of learning how they fit into the world around them.
If ANYONE tries cutting my future kids hair without consent. Iām having them charged with assault with a deadly weapon if possible. Youāre coming at my child with scissors and no reason outside of your own desire to chop at my kids head?? Youāre gonna learn REAL QUICK thatās not okay.
If I canāt charge them. Iām cutting THEIR hair and seeing how they like it. If I get charged? Oh well, why didnāt it work the other way? Fuck that. Snip snip bitch
Iāve heard about STRANGERS doing shit like this to kids they donāt even know. They just see them and decide they know whatās best in that moment. Are you serious?
Some rando: You should think about stopping your prescription
Me: My pills make me not want to die tho
They: You shouldnāt want to die, thatās not normal
Me: Yeah thatās why Iām taking my pills
Again: But you arenāt the *real* you when youāre on your pills
Me: Iām the alive version of me
An actual doctor, once: āRelying On A Chemical Crutch For A Hormonal Imbalance Denies The Fortitude Of The Human Soulā
Me: Cool so like Iām agnostic
They: āBut you might be on pills the rest of your life!ā
Me: āSo?ā
Good! That means that I have a ārest ofā my life to continue living!
Thanks to the pills.
Meanwhile, no person ever: āYou should think about giving up your insulin/antiretrovirals/beta blockers/anti-rejection drugs/prosthetic legs/daily multivitamin, because using those your whole life is bad for some reasonā
Oh no, they do that too.
I have a kidney transplant. A woman once told me she didnāt believe in organ transplants and that people should just die when theyāre meant to.Ā
Sounds like a great set-up for a murder
People who are fully healthy, fit and neurotypical seem to think they are that way because theyāre doing something right that the rest of us havenāt thought of, and not just because they got lucky
ADSLKFJLSDKF i WILL turn off submissions you little shits.Ā
someone just sent me doofenshmirtz x perry mpreg art, itās not even the worse thing iāve seen today
dr doofenshmirtz is WHAT
oh yeah, doofenshmirtz is trans-coded. there was a good post about it a while back
at first glance it passes for mildly sexist humor (him growing up being treated like a girl) but the creators are pretty progressive so i wouldnāt be surprised if that was their way of sneaking in a trans character.Ā
i know this solely bc i saw it on my dash months ago. this has no relation to the terrible art in my inbox, or the fact that perry is drawn as a horrible blue humanoid strongly resembling Handsome Squidward
thatās FALSE, actually! and a common but dangerous misconception, which iāll get to in a minute.
it blows my mind that i have accidentally found myself in a discussion about drĀ doofenshmirtzās theoretical hrt status, but he canonically cannot grow facial hair & has an unusually high voice, so it doesnāt sound like heās been through testosterone based puberty. not all trans people choose or are able to go on hormones, and plenty of people discontinue or take a break from hormone therapy (for person, medical, financial reasons etc).Ā Ā
also he does have a daughter in the show. idk if itās confirmed that sheās his biological child but plenty of trans people have kids, before or after transitioning.Ā
an important fact to know about trans health is that afab people who are on testosterone or have been in the past can still get pregnant. (some trans parents pause hrt in order to do so.) though in most cases testosterone lowers fertility, these changes are not necessarily permanent andĀ hormone therapy is not a form of birth control (the last is true for both testosterone and estrogen therapy).Ā If youāre having the type of sex that can result in pregnancy, talk to your doctor to make sure your using the right precautions. and whatever your assigned sex at birth, if you think you may want kids in the future be sure to talk to your doctor about fertility issues before starting hormone therapy. youĀ shouldnāt have to choose between your transition and your ability to have children, if you want them.Ā
again, i cannot believe iām having this conversation in regards to a kidās cartoon character, but trans healthcare education is piss poor in my country, so we take opportunities where we find them
thanks to everyone in the notes for pointing out the platypus is also trans
Disney peaked with the Emperorās New Groove
Eartha Kittās performance as Yzmaā¦the musicā¦the comedyā¦the Kronk. It is a perfect film
Additional reasons:
Every single character is a PoC
First Disney animated film to show a pregnant woman onscreen
Real relationship goals: Pacha and ChiCha
Really diverse body types on everybody!
Classic tropes and classic tropes subverted (enemies to friends, anyone?)
Kronk
Diverse body type: Llama
Also Kuzkoās character arc is nice to see, instead ofĀ ābe yourselfā itās likeĀ āhey, donāt be an assholeā and he actually learns it
Also r*mance wasnāt at the center of the story, growth was, and that was really refreshing
Also the STYLE:
the random cliffs and ledges and peaks and plummets.Ā
the weird-ass, completely inefficient architecture that served no real functional purpose other than to be big and grand and showy.Ā
that fucking 90 foot throne
the fact that Yzma was lounging on a ledge next to a bottomless chasm somewhere in the middle of the palaceĀ
the COLORS oh my god enough of this desaturated, gritty, hyper-realistic bullshit i wanna see GAUDY DECADENCE for the sake of DECADENCE again
Yzma is literally purple and looks like a skeleton and yet somehow no one is bothered by it and she somehow looks fabulous
āThe Poserā at Freedom Plaza, Washington DC by Bryan Buckley
Bryan Buckley launched the "Trump Statue Initiative" to immortalize the president's worst moments in gold-painted living statues.
During the installation, which lasted three or four hours in each location, violinist Celeste Vee was on hand to play songs by artists who have banned Trump from using them at his campaign rallies.
It just gets better and better.
⦠and then it gets bad.
as powerful as the message these live statues send is, please remember that biden is literally no better than trump and has almost the same goals as him
and remember that you donāt have to choose between red or blue; the third party exists for a reason
dear fucking god can you please shut up
if you vote third party trump is going to win. there is no if ands or buts
the entire point of getting biden to office is to flip the senate
because if we donāt flip the senate weāre going to have a red congress probably for the rest of our lives and it will do irreparable damage that will take ages to clean up
this is not about your fucking pride. it doesnāt matter if you donāt like biden. this kind of voter apathy is what got trump elected IN THE FIRST PLACE
I have a very, very, very difficult time believing that Milquetoast Democrat #179455 hasĀ āalmost the same goalsā as someone who a) transparently wants to be an unelected autocrat, b) has built his campaign and current presidency on putting dark-skinned people in cages or six feet under, and c) has been trying to hold onto power by sending hordes of armed thugs to attack American citizens. Yes, yes, Biden isnāt a good person, but pretending that having him around would be as bad as another four years of a civil rights-breaking, plague-spreading, blindingly racist wannabe dictator is, to put it bluntly, fucking stupid. Where have you been the last four years? Under a rock?
Yes, yes, third-party candidates are a thing. There also hasnāt been a single solitary time in the history of the nation that theyāve come close to even winning a single state without having a formerly sitting president, one of the nationās most popular, at their helm ā and even then, Theodore Rooseveltās Bull Moose Party didnāt even win a decent third of the popular vote, and no party ever came close to that again. Third parties are a bad joke, and while it would be great to break out of the two-party system, this isnāt gonna happen in the next three months. There is absolutely no way, no way whatsoever, that a third party can genuinely expect to get the number of votes necessary to even come close to one of the two whales sprawling over the nation right now.
And you know what? If you choose to vote for a minor partylet you know can never win because you value your moral purity more highly than the lives of your fellow people? You are absolutely going to be responsible for the next four years of Trump weāre going to get, not that any of you are going to admit it.
Oh, gee, I wonder why making people put their lives at risk for the economy might make them consider ideologies other than capitalism?
We were socialists the entire time!
That one time we got accidentally locked out of the house. I remember that FOR ME it was a fun adventure!
THIS IS ADORABLE
some of you never dedicated most of your time to a shitty cw tv show and lost all your braincells in the process and it shows
What kind of pokemon is this?
an electric toothbrush
