I lived in a room and board that failed the burrito test. (”If you’re not allowed to get up in the middle of the night to microwave a burrito, you live in an institution.”) No one stopped me from going to bed, but they did tell me I had to have my lights out by 10, and that I had to be out of the house by 10 the next morning. When I complained to my outpatient program that I needed more help than I was getting, they threatened me with board and care, where my cell phone would be taken away and I would lose contact with the outside world. My case manager sounded so damn smug, like he had caught me out, when he said, “if you’re really as helpless as you say, then you need to be in a board and care.” Like my only options were struggling to do things I couldn’t do, or surrendering my life to an institution.

When I tried to talk about these things with other people, they always rationalized it away. (I told my dad once that my caseworker was reading my e-mails as I wrote them, demonstrating extreme disrespect for my privacy, and he said, “Well, she’s probably making sure you don’t use the internet to goof off.” I was 22 years old.)

People tend to mock the idea that telling an adult when to go to bed, when to eat, etc., is a human rights violation, even though they would find it outrageous and absurd if anyone came into their lives to do the same thing to them.

And this is what people seem to think when they tell disabled activists we’re just not disabled enough to understand that some people really do need to be locked up and deprived of all autonomy.

Actually I want to talk about this a little more than I did, because olympic swimming is incredible and works perfectly to talk about attaining goals.

I used to be a varsity swimmer, and I was damn good, but I was forced into it by my parents and completely lost my love for it and therein my drive. But in high school I was swimming against such talented swimmers like Olympic Swimmer Missy Franklin. I’ve met her, and the main difference between her and me was that I was strong but had no passion, but she was strong BECAUSE she had passion.

And I could have been good, really good, maybe even Olympic good. I even have the predisposition for it, been swimming since I was 2 years old, have a mom who was almost an olympic swimmer. Missy didn’t have either of those things, she just wanted it, loved it, had been doing it for a long time, and decided she was going to kick ass at it.

Right, that’s great and all, but I completely missed my opportunity to be an olympic swimmer, yeah? and can never achieve those dreams I had as a kid? No, not even though. There was this whole thought that female athletes peak when they’re 17 years old and lose their skills quickly after that, and male athletes peak around 19. But then Olympic Swimmer Dara Torres shows up. She was an olympic swimmer when she was 17, 21 and 25. Pretty normal age for retirement. She had a few kids. She kicked butt at being a mom.

And then at 33 years old she decides she’s bored or something gets back in shape and kicks so much ass at the trials that she lands herself on the Olympic Team ONCE AGAIN. And then 8 years later, she decides, heck I’m 41 now, no one has ever made the olympic swim team as old as I am, I want to get in shape yet again and teach these children how sports work.

And she still has the record for oldest US Olympic Swimmer, not even any men have beat out that record.

So basically what I’m saying is you could be an olympic swimmer, you really could be. And there are obviously a lot of things stopping you and trying to get in your way: your brain, society, too much chocolate cake for example. But if you really dedicate yourself to it and love it with all of your heart you could, you really could.

And lets say olympic swimming isn’t your jam? That’s cool too. There isn’t a single skill in this world that you can’t learn if you absolutely love it and want to. Any skill you want is going to take time. There are countless famous people who started learning a skill after 20, 30, 40, or even 50. Not a single person has even been president under age 35 (most likely because you’re not allowed to be, but there’s a reason for that). Whatever you want to do you’re probably going to be bad at first, and I’m talking really shitty.

Van Gogh got started in his 20′s and was thought to have no artistic talent at first and was forced to sit in the back of classrooms where the worst artists in the class sat. So yeah you’ll probably be bad, like really bad and everyone including you will think you’re bad. If you stick with it though, if you’re willing to work for years and years, if you keep loving it after all the pain it’s given you,

then you might just paint Starry Night.

As someone who started drawing at 35 and who always was like: ‘eh, I can’t draw a stick figure to save my life, but I would love to be able to’ this is near and dear to my heart. If you want to draw, start drawing. Keep drawing. Be shit at drawing at first. Keep it up, doodle things on scraps but also draw stuff you don’t think you can draw. Challenge yourself, you will be surprised what you can do. It will be frustrating at times, but it will also be awesome. It is SO much a matter of practice and dedication, not talent.

i’m just gonna take this post for a moment so i can rant but like

i Hate how entitled adults can feel over a child’s hair!

it started when i was young myself, i wanted a mohawk, but my dad didn’t approve of that look on a “girl”, and insisted i’d regret such a bold cut. at 16 i was finally given full autonomy over my own head.

but then i have a son and everyone around us is trying to keep his hair short. when we finally moved out just me my partner and him, i told him he doesn’t need to get any haircuts he doesn’t want.

so he starts growing it out, it’s still short but coming on mid-length. his teacher makes a point to tell me it’s getting long as if i don’t have eyes. i hear her walking out with him one day talking to him about haircuts, as if to coax him into one. eventually i get child services called on me for ‘forcing a transgender lifestyle’ over what i can only assume is from a combination of me drawing cute ponies on his valentine box and letting him go to school in a ponytail.

he kept it short for awhile after but told me he wanted to grow it out again, so i let him of course. he comes home one day after getting a haircut at his grandpa’s and tells me he didn’t Want the haircut.

i ask why he got it then and learned he was bribed with a promise of a surprise IF he cut his hair.

tl;dr people need to back the hell up off of children and let them have owership of what’s on THEIR body! /rant

This happened to me when I was little too!! Growing up I had naturally tight Shirley Temple curls. The only problem was that you can’t get a hair brush through it if your life depended on it until it grew out over a few years.

but This One Lady from church decided that leaving my hair messy and curly was child abuse and threatened to call social services on my family every damn time she saw me until one day she was the designated kid watcher and ho boy my momma tells me i came out with tears in my eyes and greasy slicked down hair and that’s where she ends the story because i think my mother beat her ass but yeah.

I loved my daughter’s long blond hair. It was thick and wavy and beautiful but when she told me she wanted it cut short ‘like a boy’(she was four) I took her to the salon and let her whack it off.

The stylist was skeptical, ‘are you sure?” and the thing is, she said this to me, not my daughter. So I asked my girl ‘are you sure you want it cut short?’ She was. The hair went. The stylist acted nervous most of the way through like she was waiting for one of us to burst into tears, but it looked cute! And my daughter loved it! (And it’s been short ever since.)

that’s FALSE, actually! and a common but dangerous misconception, which i’ll get to in a minute.

it blows my mind that i have accidentally found myself in a discussion about dr doofenshmirtz’s theoretical hrt status, but he canonically cannot grow facial hair & has an unusually high voice, so it doesn’t sound like he’s been through testosterone based puberty. not all trans people choose or are able to go on hormones, and plenty of people discontinue or take a break from hormone therapy (for person, medical, financial reasons etc).

also he does have a daughter in the show. idk if it’s confirmed that she’s his biological child but plenty of trans people have kids, before or after transitioning.

an important fact to know about trans health is that afab people who are on testosterone or have been in the past can still get pregnant. (some trans parents pause hrt in order to do so.) though in most cases testosterone lowers fertility, these changes are not necessarily permanent and hormone therapy is not a form of birth control (the last is true for both testosterone and estrogen therapy). If you’re having the type of sex that can result in pregnancy, talk to your doctor to make sure your using the right precautions. and whatever your assigned sex at birth, if you think you may want kids in the future be sure to talk to your doctor about fertility issues before starting hormone therapy. you shouldn’t have to choose between your transition and your ability to have children, if you want them.

again, i cannot believe i’m having this conversation in regards to a kid’s cartoon character, but trans healthcare education is piss poor in my country, so we take opportunities where we find them

I have a very, very, very difficult time believing that Milquetoast Democrat #179455 has “almost the same goals” as someone who a) transparently wants to be an unelected autocrat, b) has built his campaign and current presidency on putting dark-skinned people in cages or six feet under, and c) has been trying to hold onto power by sending hordes of armed thugs to attack American citizens. Yes, yes, Biden isn’t a good person, but pretending that having him around would be as bad as another four years of a civil rights-breaking, plague-spreading, blindingly racist wannabe dictator is, to put it bluntly, fucking stupid. Where have you been the last four years? Under a rock?

Yes, yes, third-party candidates are a thing. There also hasn’t been a single solitary time in the history of the nation that they’ve come close to even winning a single state without having a formerly sitting president, one of the nation’s most popular, at their helm – and even then, Theodore Roosevelt’s Bull Moose Party didn’t even win a decent third of the popular vote, and no party ever came close to that again. Third parties are a bad joke, and while it would be great to break out of the two-party system, this isn’t gonna happen in the next three months. There is absolutely no way, no way whatsoever, that a third party can genuinely expect to get the number of votes necessary to even come close to one of the two whales sprawling over the nation right now.

And you know what? If you choose to vote for a minor partylet you know can never win because you value your moral purity more highly than the lives of your fellow people? You are absolutely going to be responsible for the next four years of Trump we’re going to get, not that any of you are going to admit it.
