pro player neil josten who is known for his stamina worldwide because wtf he can play full games without slowing down for a second?? he gets thrown and punched and he still can jump, running circles around backliners all the same. the sport community is shocked. when he and andrew come out as a couple, the tag praying for andrew minyard was trending for months
andrew is kind of offended, he doesn't care about peoples opinions but he can tire josten out very easily like c'mon they should've known better
I don’t like seeing Neil and Andrew represented through infantilization, or deliberately portrayed as passive, naive characters. what I do love, however, is the idea that Neil and Andrew can allow themselves not to be the ones in control. they can simply let themselves be loved.
the way Neil hands Andrew a bottle and lets him open it when he’s feeling too weak to bother, never even attempting it himself because he knows Andrew can do it faster and more easily. the way Andrew lets his hand linger against Neil’s palm, refusing to let go until the very last second, he frowns almost imperceptibly when someone pulls Neil away from him and asks him to come over. the way Neil wraps an arm around Andrew’s waist and draws him closer when he notices someone behind them about to pass. the way Andrew rests his head against Neil’s shoulder on the ride back to campus after an away game, absentmindedly turning Neil’s hand over in his own and tracing a finger along the lines of the scars while the rest of the Foxes talk around them. that is what I love about them. neither of them is afraid that letting the other take care of them means surrendering control or becoming weak. they can simply relax, knowing that being loved does not make them any less capable, independent, or formidable. they have someone in whose presence none of that disappears when they allow themselves, for once, to be open to receiving love.
A crazy guy with a mafia legacy, a never-ending tongue that will one day lead him to the grave, zero trust in the world and a burning desire to live, a guy whose name is known to everyone who has ever controlled a federal channel and heard of the Butcher, with excellent escape, disguise, lying, and knife skills.
And another guy who killed his mother and didn't plan to survive, the one who served time in the penal colony, who warms knives under bandages on his hands and will pull them out at any second, pressing them to your throat, the one who doesn't smile, preferring to glare.
They decided to have two cats together ! Two fluffy little bundles! With the sweet names King Fluff and Sir Fat Cat McCatterson!
Like in children's cartoons: every respectable villain loves cats.
They really do have their own furry children 😭
Neil, who wants to be remembered, to prove that he exists
And
Andrew, who's cursed to never forget
as someone who occasionally wants affection but does not like hugs, i prefer going up to a person and just resting my forehead on their shoulder and hovering. and i imagine that andrew does that to neil often
Ok, so I know we make a lot of jokes about how gay the Trojans are, but after reading tgr… that’s totally on purpose
There’s a reason that Rhemman respects Wymack so much, and it’s that they’re doing the same thing. Where Wymack has made a team that’s a haven for kids who need a second chance, Rhemman has made one that’s a safe space for queer athletes.
Rhemman’s quieter about it, in part because he can be, and in part for the safety of his kids, but it’s the same thing Wymack’s doing. And while he might not be as outspoken about it, he’s absolutely putting out the signals for those who might need to know. Just look at who his captains are. Jeremy, who’s had a lot of attention for being unsubtly gay. And Xavier, a trans man who has transitioned while vice-captain and isn’t trying to hide it.
And if his two captains weren’t a loud enough signal that his team was a safe space, you have the team’s reputation. They’re known for being nice to everyone. Anyone who joins this team knows what standards they’re going to be held to and can guess that bullying won’t be tolerated within the team. More than that, the team’s reputation doesn’t just mean safety at home, it also acts as a shield for its players. It’s well established that almost no one beefs with the Trojans and going after one of their players is a taboo. (Yes Jean is the exception here, but the more entrenched in the team he gets the more it’ll be true for him too).
Rhemman has gone out of his way to make a space as safe as possible for queer athletes. And for those who need it, he’ll show them it’s possible to live a happy fulfilled life by modeling it for them. Rhemman and Wymack are two sides of the same coin.
"wymack sold his gun when I broke into his apartment"-andrew...
Shout out to wymack who would rather face an intruder bare handed than shoot one of his foxes....
Renee: You know what they say, kill em with kindness
Neil: I think a gun is more effective
Renee: …
Neil: …
Renee: You know what, you’re right
Andreil 's children asking them "what were your thoughts of eachother before you were together"
Neil: I wanted to smack his face with heavy-heeled shoes he forced me to wear...
Andrew: I thought he was a hallucination from my meds....
Andreil's children: oh...
Neil: you did call me a pipe dream tho!
Andrew: oh well...
Andrew has never been held by Neil from behind. If Andrew always sleeps facing Neil, then Neil has never really had the chance to hold him the way Andrew holds him, and, as far as Neil is concerned, that is something that needs to be remedied immediately. one evening, when they settle into bed to watch some random nonsense on a laptop, Neil stubbornly climbs over Andrew and squeezes himself into the narrow space between him and the wall. realizing that their usual arrangement has suddenly been rearranged, Andrew shifts reluctantly and feels an arm tighten around his waist before he even has the chance to ask Neil what the hell he is doing. the weight of Neil’s arm pulls him back against a warm body, and lying like this, with someone solid and vibrant at his back, feels completely unfamiliar. “Get back on your side,” Andrew says. Instead, Neil gently buries his nose against the back of Andrew’s head, his palm wandering slowly over Andrew’s chest and waist. “Does it bother you?” he asks. “I’m used to having you in front of me,” Andrew answers without hesitation. “That’s not what I asked.” Neil loosens his hold slightly, then clarifies in a voice that reaches directly into the space beside Andrew’s ear, “Do you like it or not?” Andrew stays silent for a while, taking the time to actually examine what he is feeling, although he does not need particularly long to reach an answer. “I like it.” the words come out quietly, followed by Andrew awkwardly adjusting the pillow beneath his cheek. he hears Neil exhale sharply, exactly the way he does before pulling a smile onto his face, but Andrew deliberately chooses to ignore it. Neil settles his arm around Andrew’s waist, drawing him closer as he buries his face against the back of Andrew’s head, breathing in the familiar scent of his shower gel and deodorant. Andrew furrows his brow, trying to adjust to a position in which he has lost his usual place as the observer. the unfamiliar vulnerability keeps threatening to surface, yet somehow each wave of it collides with something else entirely: the warmth pressing steadily against his back, the quiet rhythm of breathing against the back of his head, the occasional kiss along his hairline or the nape of his neck, and the slow, absentminded strokes of Neil’s scarred palm across his stomach. the gestures are so quiet and monotonous that Andrew barely notices himself inching closer, slowly allowing his body to grow accustomed to the unfamiliar position and deciding to stay like this just a little longer.
"Okay, I honestly thought I would have a lot more trouble with the size, but I think I did pretty fine, right?",Nicky rambled anxiously as he bobbed around Andrew, who was currently wearing his graduation robes and looking unimpressed while Nicky fussed over him like a mother hen.
The whole scene was familiar enough that it made Neil smile, though it was strained. The twins and Kevin's graduation ceremony was next week, and Nicky, who was visiting, had made it his duty to take them shopping. Neil hadn't found it in himself to tag along, for reasons he wouldn't let himself think. It was fine, great even,Neil didn't have any reason to feel like something was eating him whole.
Nicky shortly excused himself to go talk to Erik, leaving Andrew to fix his attention on Neil. Neil didn't know how he was looking at Andrew, but the blonde raised an eyebrow,"You got something you want to say to me,junkie?",he asked mildly. Neil didn't know what he should say,but he blurted out,"You look beautiful.". That much Neil was certain of at least. Andrew Minyard was beautiful,no matter what. It was as simple as that really.
Andrew looked intently at Neil, unruffled by the sudden compliment. Those hazel-gold eyes seemed to stare straight at his soul, trying to figure him out. And to his horror, Neil felt a lump rise in his throat. He rubbed at his eyes, but they were dry. "Neil,"Andrew was suddenly at his side,"Talk. What's happening?". Neil shook his head,"It's nothing, I'm fine,"he balked a little at the sight of Andrew's glare. He sighed and ran his hands through his hair, then gave in,"It's just... things are changing, okay? It feels like everyone is slipping out of reach, settling down, moving on. And I know, it's stupid, but as I'm seeing them all graduate and go,I feel like I'm losing something. Dan,Matt, Allison,Renee. I know it's silly to resent them for moving along with life, but I can't stop it. And these thoughts just kept growing and growing, and now, you're leaving too, Andrew, and I can't stop thinking that-"that you're leaving me forever. That you got bored. That you'll go and find someone better. That you won't want anything to do with me anymore. That Neil Josten will be nothing more than a college fling to you.
He doesn't say those things out loud, but it's as if Andrew hears them anyway. His voice is uncharacteristically gentle as he asks,"Yes or no?"and after a yes from Neil, grabs hold of his face and kisses him slowly. After they break apart, Andrew stays silent for a whole minute until,"I was looking at apartments the other day, something close enough to go to practice. The place is nice, not too big. I need to sign a couple more things, but it's pretty final.",he speaks the words softly, almost hesitant, though Neil isn't sure why, that is, until Andrew slowly leans back and withdraws a tiny key. It's a copy, and Neil is hit with a sense of deja vu as Andrew presses the key into his scarred palm. A different kind of promise this time. You gave me a key and called it home. A promise of them. Together.
Neil held the key to his heart, and suddenly he was the scared, lonely guy beating himself up for joining the foxes again. He looked up at Andrew again, asking the question with his eyes, and when he got confirmation, rushed toward him and kissed Andrew with such enthusiasm that he lifted him off his feet.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

up late thinking about: “‘what put you in such a good mood?’ turning put andrew in neil’s line of sight again”
neil w one of those coats that have tons of pockets on the inside lol
he looks cool and mysterious from the outside, but inside are just. junk. that he likes to keep with him. or maybe u might think he looks like a shady drug dealer, when in reality its more ridiculous than it is anything dangerous
things i think he'd keep in these pockets
a tiny plush from the time when andrew and neil competed at a claw machine. andrew had won, but shoved the plush into neils hands anyway
lollipops for andrew, an assortment of other candies and chocolates and caramels too
a small collection of rocks and pebbles he found on his runs
polaroid refills (bcz i think the girls would have atleast 2 polaroids, both the same kind.) js incase they run out
a pack of cards (mostly for when andrew's hands twitch and neil can feel that he wants to do something with his hands. and also bcz he likes looking at andrew's hands, but also for if anyones bored)
a wad of bills (literally in hundreds, probably like 20,000$ cash)
unopened plastic straw
scar creme
reusable, foldable rain poncho (andrew hates getting wet)
a replica of his keys incase smth happens and he loses them
a whole buncha takeout reciepts from when andrew and neil get takeout, that neil cant get himself to throw away
its the unshakable need to carry atleast some of his more important shit with him. and also because physical proof of his identity, life and belonging is grounding
Everyone's talking about who's the most toxic of the characters, and like, I genuinely don't care. I don't need andreil (for example) to heal each other, frankly, they could make each other worse and I'd still eat it up. Happy ends look different for everyone and I love that none of these characters are polished or getting the "fairytale" ending. That's what makes them feel so real.
Judging them through the lense of moral superiority just doesn't feel right. They are playing the hand they were dealt, and with that hand most people would do worse or don't even get this far.
I don't excuse them, I just say, they make sense and I love that more than needing a therapy healed fairytale bubbly dreamy whatever for them.
