As some of you might recall from this essay, I spent the latter half of 2025 working on a comic for the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in Savannah, Georgia. Tania Sammons, a curator at the museum who had previously licensed my guide to sailors’ tattoos for a show, wrote to me with an irresistible pitch: four cartoonists would be hired, assigned a vessel from the museum's extensive collection of models, then given six months to produce a short comic for publication in an anthology alongside an accompanying museum display.

How could I say no?

My original brief was to research the Anne, the ship that brought the first colonists to Georgia, but in the aftermath of my dad's death the story took off in directions I couldn't have foreseen.

I'm releasing the whole comic online to coincide with the opening of Drawn to the Sea, the exhibition in Savannah. If you're in the area this week (or anytime over the next nine months!) you can stop in and see all the amazing work that came from myself and fellow artists Avery Hick, Rich King, and Sharon Norwood. my two favorite words in toki pona are ko and kon. partly because they both represent, changing, amorphous things. but also from a certain lens, one could define each word respectivly as clay and soul. given this, i find the phonetic similarities of ko and kon to be very compelling; the only letter that differentiates the two phonetically is a 'n' or in fancier words, an alveolar nasal consonant. what is a 'n'? well firstly it is a letter that represents a sound, but in a poetic sense its sort of a hum one makes with their mouth closed. sort of like the sound a bug makes when it is inside of a jar. and if for a moment we choose to define ko as a clay vessel and kon as an inbued essense, i find it compelling that what distinguishes the vessel from the soul is a sound that is made when a vibration echos inside of a closed hollow chamber

of course this is just one way of looking at it and the fact that ko and kon can mean many other things only multiplies the beauty of the language. i think that in this small view, there is something that is illumimated of toki pona as a whole. it is uniquely flexible and clay-like in structure. words morph to their environmental context with an ease and pliability that is harder to do in other languages and i find much joy in the multitudes of shapes a single toki pona word can take

Fun fact I remembered recently : The city of Cologne spends 100,000€ per year to prevent people from over on the "roof" (if you can call it that) of the Kölner Philharmonie. This is because it is right below the Heinrich-Böll square, so everytime someone walks on said square, the musicians below heard it. Which, as you can imagine gets really annoying after a while especially if you are trying to play music. To prevent this, Cologne hired guards to prevent people from walking on the Heinrich-Böll square during performances and rehearsals, which is about 3 times a day and 1000 times per year. The city of Cologne says that they can't soundproof the square because it would cost 10M€ which is too expensive for something like this. This has been an issue since 1999 when built the Heinrich-Böll square, which means that so far they spent 2.7M€ on this. It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
