Jason has known Slade for a very long time, most of it against his will, more of it in something of an amicable truce where a partnership between them yields more benefits than trouble.

But this is quite the novelty even for Jason when he is being handed a fresh-faced Slade who is so painstakingly green with the way he is still wet behind the ears. It feels like he is being put in charge of a very crackable egg. Jason might know how the mercenary tick in his retirement but it's a true test to his own self-control when Jason doesn't crack the kid in half at first sight just to peek at the yellow jammy yolk inside.

And it's not even the obvious inexperience but the absolute conviction in those bright blue eyes as he stares after him when Jason neatly dispatches the first round of enemies headed their way without ever even unholstering his firearm.

There's the distinct sound of machine gun fire.

Distant enough that it's hardly Jason's most immediate concern.

He pulls back the hand clamped over Slade's mouth, and he tells him as much. "You think you can follow my lead?"

The young Slade Wilson nods, and he's every bit the good solider that volunteered to be their government's personal lab rat when his mouth parts next for that yes, sir to come tumbling out.

Jason stoppers that, slipping two fingers in between Slade's lips. And the kid doesn't even bite down.

If Jason isn't trying to keep things quiet, he would probably bark out something sharp and mean and probably a fair bit insulting. But instead, he just digs his thumb in against the hinge of Slade's jaw, forcing the kid's mouth to stay open before Jason is letting out the softest scoff against the shell of his ear.

"None of that now, Wilson. I need you good and quiet for me."

It's lower than a whisper, his breath hitting warmer than the spill of fresh blood. But what's more obvious than all that is the unmistakable shiver that goes down and down and down.

sladejay is a peak jason ship because i don't have to deal with jason being written off as incompetent or inferior to the bats

his skills are utilized to their max as per utrh and lost days and he isn't treated like a reckless impulsive brute. he is also appreciated and the supposed horror of him killing isnt ever brought up. he owns his shit, kills terrible people, and looks cute doing it. slade's just there to support his baby's rightdoings and maybe stomp on invasive, asshole bats

Never getting over how Jason being so trusting of Bruce perfectly feeds into him being too trusting of Sheila

thinking about a world where jason survived but his relationship with bruce continued to deteriorate and they don't talk at all when he's an adult. curious about a story that fixes his death but doesn't assume that would fix the deep-seated problems in bruce's parenting.

like actually. bruce and dick had a severe falling out when dick grew up but are still in each other's lives because they were best friends, partners, and had complete respect and admiration for each other almost from day one. their relationship persists despite how shitty bruce sometimes is to him because of that rock-solid foundation.

that is NOT bruce & jason's relationship. the biggest problem i see in their relationship, which really rears its head in the issues preceding death in the family, is that bruce doesn't respect or trust jason. he did trust him at one point, but when they start to disagree and drift apart, he doesn't try to understand jason's pov at all, he just assumes and projects and continues to do that until jason is sure that bruce doesn't even want to help him, wouldn't care about the things that matter most to jason, and will leave him in the cold if it's better for the mission. that's not just a misunderstanding on jason's part, that's the message bruce has been sending him. bruce's behavior during death in the family only cement that. when he literally runs into jason on another continent, and for a second jason thinks that he was wrong, that bruce followed him because he cares and wants to help. but nope, bruce tells him it's a lucky coincidence that their separate objectives line up and they can stick together for this. meaning (from jason's pov) if it hadn't, he would've left jason to find his mom on his own or tried to make him go home and abandon the search entirely.

i don't know how you could fix this dynamic without bruce getting a lot more self-awareness and emotional maturity than he ever demonstrated even in his (stronger, more trusting) relationship with dick. not to mention he has alfred the enabler right there to reassure him that any problems he has are the result of jason's inherent criminal inclinations, so he never needs to do any introspection.

all this to say. if jason hadn't died the most likely result to me is that he moves out at 18 (at the latest) and they are more or less estranged. maybe he comes to christmas and thanksgiving and they try to talk about surface-level things but it's fraught.

I just realized that not only did Bruce tell Jason point blank that parents will naturally avenge their children right before he died, he also made it abundantly clear that The Greater Good matters more than personal matters.

Like no wonder Jason felt betrayed that Joker was still alive and running amok, but also no wonder Jason’s own approach was so consequentialist.

rewatching the under the red hood movie and i gotta say as much as i love jason’s speech to bruce about how mad he is that the joker’s still alive, i still maintain that a severely underrated speech in this movie is from ra’s when he’s talking to bruce and in essence says ‘yeah so i hired the joker to distract you which was my bad because he totally went overboard and killed your son :/ and i felt so guilty i decided not to try and fight you anymore and then i stole your son’s corpse and tried to revive him via lazarus pit so i could like. make amends. except that was also my bad because we fucked that one up real good and when he came back out BOY was he weird in the head. killed my guys and then fucking jumped out a window and we lost him. my bad. and i thought he’d died again but apparently he’s in gotham and is like. totally destroying your whole lives which again, my bad. shouldn’t have tried to help. sorry about that. i’ll just stay out of your business from now on.’ which is actually the funniest characterisation of ra’s i’ve ever seen
