i think what made count the rice so awesome (if ominous) is that it harkened back to game changer’s fundamentals which is the only way to win is by learning and the only way to learn is by playing. i love the game changers where they get no instructions and it’s more puzzle based because that’s what season 1 game changer was really founded on.

I keep thinking about this moment because it was really sweet and unprompted. Catherine was so excited to be there and wanted so badly to do a good job (she did a GREAT job with maybe the hardest episode yet) and to get a little praise from someone with as much Dropout success as Ify? You can't buy an ego boost like that!

She also really IS good at Game Changer because there's no damn way I would've ever figured out the trick, let alone as fast as she did. Also the fact she instinctively just gave away everything she learned to help other constestants. I hope they bring her back for a less chaotic episode soon.

IMO, blurring the lines between “I’m defending them because they’re right” and “I’m defending them because you’re taking this too far” is step numero uno to cutting down the very existence of fair trial and democracy–even in places where saying that might seem a little dramatic. 

Mob mentality is extremely strong in humans and it’s also extremely dangerous. Mobs don’t think things through. Mobs kill and they destroy and they can’t be reasoned with. Someone trying to calm a mob down isn’t someone defending the ~problematic party~ It’s time we re-learn that.

TMA has made me so much happier in so many ways since I started listening to it, and has quite possibly altered my brain chemistry and the trajectory of my life (not what I was expecting when I started listening to the funky horror fiction podcast my roommate recommended to me, but here we are), so I wanted to extend a thanks to you and everyone else who worked on the show for creating such a phenomenal work.

One of the things I loved most about listening was how much fun everyone was having and how close you all seemed in bonus content/qnas/etc.. Creative work, especially writing, has always been very solitary for me, and though that's nice at times! it can be disheartening, too.

I'm starting at university in the fall, and I'm really hoping to change that, so... Any advice on making friends/building community/starting collaborative projects when it comes to creative work?

Hey, Lovely to hear and I am happy to be your well meaning but slightly out of touch uncle for the topic. Advice for making a creative community at University: 1) Buy a door stop. If you are staying on campus prop your door open the day you move in. People will wander corridors of closed fire doors looking to meet people. Yours will be the open door and you can immediately turn your room into a social hub/ point of reference. 2) Join every society that even vaguely tickles your interest (unless they expect major fees/dues up front in which case be more reserved). Attend them all at first then let them atrophy naturally. The stuff you actually want to do will rise to the top and the rest will drop off. You'll be left with a broader palette of contacts and interests. 3) Befriend the STEM nerds. Every gang of engineers is looking for a fun humanities pet and most of those groups will have at least one person who secretly wishes they were doing something creative. That will be your go-to tech person in the future, I guarantee it. 4) Do a sport but don't let it consume your time. Not just good for your health, it will pair you with people you wouldn't normally meet and give a schema of shared interest to make convo easier. This is where you are most likely to meet your wild-card contact (i.e. someone you couldn't ever plan to meet who turns out to be essential due to their connections or whatever.) 5) Learn hard skills. Lighting, sound, electronics etc. This is the easiest time you have to get these skills and having them immediately makes you more resilient as a creator both financially and in terms of insight moving forwards. 6) Accept as much useful responsibility as you can easily handle. i.e. being a visual artist who is secretary of the Art Club = useful and helpful. Being a visual artist who is a treasurer for the cocktail society = less so. Some responsibility is important but remember there is an opportunity cost. Every position of responsibility you take precludes you from another. So choose them don't just drift into them. Bonus: Don't shave your head for a performance role 2 weeks into semester. No-one will recognise you and everyone will avoid you. TRUST ME. As always, your mileage may vary. I am a neurospicy bunny who made a personal study of how to socialise like a human, I am NOT an expert, guru or trained proffesional in this field.

The thing that’s always missing from the “women didn’t fight for the right to work they were already working they fought to get paid” is that many women also very much wanted to work.

Women wanted to be lawyers and engineers and chemists. They wanted to use their brains in challenging and interesting ways. They wanted to get the satisfaction from solving problems and inventing new shit and getting attention for it.

I know not everyone is born with intellectual curiosity or drive or determination but some people are and many of those people are women.

Stratt was a historian. She wasn't just pirating for the sake of entertainment for the astronauts, she was doing a full historical backup of the planet. Who knows how much knowledge and communications ability, how much art and culture and history, how much niche knowledge of how to make specific pieces of modern technology or modern medicines, was lost as the wars for resources isolated everyone, as the death tolls led to the deaths of specialized trade workers and scientists, as the power grids failing across the planet (or cut off, potentially) led to all the cloud servers going dark. Stratt was facing methods of combating extinction and she did her best to ensure that if/when the Hail Mary worked, it would send back not just the hope of the future in the solution to the astrophage, but the restoration of history and culture and knowledge.

Just.... she pirated everything, and put it all on the Hail Mary.

I love episodes of Game Changer where the only way to win is by learning & the only way to learn is by playing. With some episodes, like Don't Wake Standards & Practices, the overall flow of the game becomes pretty apparent pretty quickly, & also there's some surprises along the way. But then there's episodes like Count the Rice, Deja Vu, or Bingo, where the basic conceit of what the game even is is an ongoing mystery. I love that stuff.
