[ID: Project Hail Mary fanart of Grace and Stratt working together, Stratt lying on the couch and using her laptop while Grace sits on the floor below her while reading a report and eating Twizzlers, a stack of papers beside him. Stratt is sticking a post-it on Grace's forehead that says "dinner soon," and there are more post-its scattered around the room and on Grace's body. End ID]
ID provided by @nebulations! thank you!
key to Eva Stratt isn't "she does whatever she wants." She does whatever she thinks is necessary. Her own wants are so low on her priority list they might as well not exist. She'll do anything, Anything, to get the job done. Including pretending that her own feelings are completely insignificant for so long, she'll be angry at one of her only friends for refusing to die. "I've destroyed myself to make this happen - why can't you grant me the same sacrifice? Can't you see this betrayal goes both ways?" movie!Stratt is of course, softer and more stoic about it. Which I think makes sense: she understands movie!Grace needs (the illusion of) compassion to convince him to agree. She'll put aside her anger to say what she thinks is the right thing. Afterall, isn't she an expert in putting aside her own feelings to get the job done?
ALSO ALSO while I'm going off, we do all realise that Eva sending Grace to Tua Ceti wasn't just sending their best chance to Tau Ceti, but sending their Best Chance away from Earth???
Dr. Ryland Grace was her Second in command. He was the First Officer. He knew eveything she wanted done and how to do it, he had the authority, he had the following, he had the history of working on the Project.
He was the Tertiary Science Specialist, but he was her back up for Redundancy FIRST.
She was was arrested, she knew she would be. She didn't have time for that and she wasn't going to fight it. The plan was ABSOLUTELY for "Lap dog Puppy face" Grace "you staggering waste of carbon" GRACE to take over leadership in whatever capacity could be acheived, to convince and argue the world i to compliance.
Ryland would be subject to all the laws, he wouldnt have had full immunity to do just anything, and he wouldnt nessisarily do eveything Eva did. But he would have known her goals, her wants, and he would have done what he could to achieve those goals
So when she shot him into the fucking stratosphere, WHO the HELL was the Tertiary Stratt!?!?! Did she HAVE ONE!?
She saw that building blow with Annie and Martin inside, and she saw BOTH side of the operation, the Hail Mary's flight and the PLANET's more future in the meantime fucking crumble.
God some one give that woman a hug,
Loving all of the posts about Eva Stratt being the trolley operator but what I think some people are missing in their trolley problem analogies for Eva Stratt's choice is that Stratt was not a bystander pulling a lever, the lever had already been pulled and the trolley was barreling towards all of humanity and Stratt's choice was to make a desperate attempt to block the trolley with her own body but no matter how desperate she was to solve it on her own she knew she couldn't, she knew she needed others, she needed people willing to help take the force. The trolley was mere inches away and she needed only one more person, that person was her right hand man, her closest companian, her best friend, and she begged him to sit at her side on those tracks and he refused, looking down at her where she sat on those track yelling at her how unfair she was being to ask him to sit down, as if she did not know the pain of sitting there since day one. Yes she had to tie him to those tracks kicking and screaming, yes it hurt, but she did not do it from the sidelines, she was standing on the tracks herself
One project hail mary character dynamic from the book that I love is Grace moping around like ough I'm just Stratt's little lapdog, her pet scientist that she drags around everywhere, this sucks so bad
Meanwhile everyone else is apparently like waow. There he goes. Mr. Number Two of the hail mary project. Stratt's right hand man. And also her lover.
Eva Stratt haunting Ryland Grace. But just so annoyingly.
"This imaginary coffee is so good. How's the meburger?"
"Shut up."
"At least you're not starving. For all you know I starved to death back home. Maybe I never saw your videologs! Maybe some stranger got your xenonite toy!"
"Shut up."
"I bet they would build you a Vat for your little toy ocean if you asked nicely."
"Shut up."
"Want me to sing you something to take your mind off the fact that you will never touch anyone ever again?"
"SHUT UP."
"I'm so proud of you."
"..."
"I would have told you that for real if you had just said yes when I asked you."
"SHUT. UP."
"Knock-knock."
"Who's there?"
... silence. Just silence.
"Grace and Rocky saved two planets of intelligent life." Yeah, so did Eva Stratt btw. Do you know how much caffeine that woman must've been on to get major power on earth to coordinate, to organize the world's first interstellar spaceship in just FOUR years, and you know,,, to tie her best friend to the train tracks and blast him to space. Yeah Grace and Rocky did all that. But holy shit Stratt did all that too.
big fan of strattland being a little too comfortable in each others' space and weirding everyone else out completely straight-faced
project hail mary is a fantastic movie that genuinely has me staring at the ceiling at like 2 am. god. its the concept of dying so others can live. what if the sacrificial lamb was there the whole time and taught the butcher how to build the slaughterhouse. what if the lamb was dragged there kicking and screaming and was told that it was dispensable because it had no one, not a family or a lover or even a dog and what if the lamb said that it just wanted to live. isnt that enough? isnt wanting to live enough? what if the lamb woke up alone and afraid but remembered enough about living and love to place his head on the chopping block anyway. and most importantly, what if the butcher wasnt a butcher but just the shepherd trying to save the rest of the flock
like real people do
inspired by chapter five of Equanimity by dkspeace, it made me sick and unwell and you all should go read it
sketch under the cut
I think stratt's approach to her health is a combination of a) believing that it absolutely, comprehensively does not matter in the context of her current situation and being willing to put herself through literally any hardship if it can give humanity a better chance and b) viewing herself as a critical piece of equipment that cannot be allowed to malfunction or, god forbid, breakdown under any circumstances. she has the precise numbers on how little sleep she can get, how many meals she can miss, and how much caffeine she can have before it significantly affects how she operates. the psychiatrists she's consulted have all told her that the pressure and the knowledge of her impending prison sentence should probably be making her "actively suicidal" or "completely fucking insane" or smth so if/when it all ever starts to feel a little heavy she makes sure to verbalize her concerns to someone else to "share the burden" (lol. lmao.) so she doesn't snap and turn into emperor caligula or whatever. she's not stupid, she knows she's too important to risk putting herself out-of-commission, so she methodically schedules in the necessary maintenance.
this isn't out of any measure of self-compassion, mind you. before all of this she used to relish the thrill of giving a project every ounce of her energy, finishing it flawlessly, then crashing for a week after, and now if she ever overextends she gets absolutely vicious with herself about "falling to her vices" and being reckless with her responsibility. she's given to insomnia and her appetite comes and goes but she makes herself go through the motions like she's her own hyper-controlling parent. she yearns to sleep for ten hours, she yearns to get her hands on some illicit amphetamines and stay up for two days, but she is categorically not allowed to be comfortable or have fun ever again. she feels her heartbeat start to pick up out of control, goes for a "mental health walk" on the deck of the aircraft carrier, and all she can see in the sky and reflected in the water is the dimming sun.
yāall.
