As of the 6/15 rules, shin guards are explicitly included in the list of permitted optional safety equipment.
Nobody used them in any of the bouts I went to in the second half of the 2013 season, but I’m sure they’ll start turning up more in 2014.
I don’t know about you, but I want all the protection I’m allowed to have, not just what is required.
I used to be undecided on face shields, then I went to a bout that had two skaters go down because of unintentional finger pokes to the eyes. At least one of them was by a teammate.
Scary stuff.

Face shields freak me out because of the chance of a neck injury when one gets caught on a shoulder mid fall
