It’s not like the entire world just went through a mass disabling event or anything. It’s not like more and more women are finally getting diagnosed with chronic, lifelong illnesses and dynamic disabilities due to advocacy and raised awareness by the people who were left to suffer before them for decades.

Worth noting that the article was written by famous TERF Kathleen Stock. This is a natural extension of her ideology, a key feature of which has been that young women (or rather those she sees as young women) don't know what's best for them, and are confused and vulnerable to being seduced by dangerous ideologies. Yet she considers herself a feminist, and in that she is part of a long tradition of middle and upper-class white feminists whose only concern as women is to take the place of the patriarch, rather than dismantling patriarchy altogether.

When we talk about the autonomy of suicide, it's almost always discussed from the side of the right to die — which is definitely important and does need to be accepted by more of society. But there's also the side of the right to live. Until society stops punishing people for their existence and depriving them of what they need, the autonomy of suicide for everyone cannot be reached. Because when people are killing themselves because of changeable, societal structures, that is not a completely autonomous decision. It is one that has been forced upon them.

Suicidal people will always exist and people who will always be suicidal exist and that is not inherently an issue that needs to be solved. But it becomes an issue when people are forced into it. Currently, suicide prevention involves institutionalizing suicidal people, telling them that they must survive, by any means possible, but so many of them have been told the opposite for their entire lives, implicitly or otherwise. Suicide prevention should involve working to improve society, making it a livable and survivable place for all people. Only then will the autonomy of suicide be achieved. Otherwise, so much of it is social murder.

In short, "Don't kill yourself 🥺" isn't enough — solving the why behind it is.

People will say shit like “self diagnosis is rife with bias and influenced by (incorrect) perceptions of conditions based off of online misinformation” as if professional misdiagnosis doesn’t have the exact same problems, as if professional misdiagnosis isn’t a large scale problem with arguably worse consequences.

Plus, when professionals misdiagnose you, unlike with self DX, they can also prescribe you (and even force you into) therapy and/or medication or even inpatient hospitalization that actively makes your symptoms worse (in short or long term) by targeting the wrong issue and potentially even causing new trauma on top of whatever issues you were already dealing with.
