as a proponent of hakoda & aang being besties it's always so funny to see those comic panels from north & south where aang is calling him "head chieftain hakoda" and "sir" like the only explanation i can imagine is that this is an extended bit they have going on. hakoda tells aang to get in place for a prank they're pulling and aang solemnly salutes and says "yes head chieftain hakoda SIR!" hakoda asks "would the revered avatar aang like to go penguin sledding this afternoon" and aang is like "i think i can squeeze it in great and honorable chief hakoda of the southern water tribe" and they dissolve into giggles

one addendum: I CAN see aang referring to Hakoda very formally at first because he doesn't know where they're supposed to stand as far as them both being political world leaders and also he would very much like to date the man's daughter....

but then Hakoda asks if he can ride Appa because, "you kids always make it look fun," and, "can I pet him? He looks really soft, is he soft?" and aang realizes they're very chill.
