I... I was not prepared.
me on days when i’m in the lab doing gruesome medical experiments on human subjects
Today is the only day you can reblog this.
Various audio snippets of my childhood that I've collected.
NES, SNES, and N64 didn't have startup sounds, Sega Master System may have had that little worm game that was in the firmware of the console you could play.
people who don’t watch horror movies are SO confident that they know everything there is to know about the genre. like it’s okay to not know things. it’s okay if you don’t like friday the 13th or whatever. i promise you don’t need to make an ass out of yourself on the internet about it
horror is an incredibly diverse genre, because there is potential horror in everything. it’s in nature, it’s in architecture and technology, it’s in human relationships, it’s in folklore, the past, the future, the mundane. there are horror movies from all over the world. it is straight up anti-intellectual to pretend that the handful of B slashers you’ve vaguely heard about comprise the totality of what horror has to offer. If you’re just not interested in horror, or if you dislike certain subgenres of horror, then that’s fine, you’re not obligated to like anything at all. but smugly announcing that you don’t like horror because you dislike a handful of VERY specific non-universal tropes is just as stupid as saying that you hate comedy because you don’t like adam sandler movies.
this is what I mean by anti-intellectualism btw

Commissions are open, but I’m slow. My responsibilities are piling up and I’ve even been neglecting myself. I haven’t been to doctors, and my health is getting worse. My priorities were the twins, and with Taz gone, I have to focus on Syd. But I have zero credit left on my care credit card, so if she needs more tests or emergency care, I can’t do anything about it. I have all of $14 on my usual credit card.
Bills are piling up. I need $900 for fuel, or we won’t have heat or hot water, and the leaves are already changing here. It’s getting colder.
I need to pay taxes in October and December. Between the two, it’s close to $6,000. If I don’t, I can lose my home.
So I’m begging. I don’t want to lose my baby girl, too. Losing my boy is already destroying me. Please help me save Syd. She’s a good girl. A sweet girl. Her birthday is September 18th! Let’s make sure she has plenty more of them.
Her birthday is just 9 days away! Please! I am literally begging. I do not have a family that will help. I don’t have a very large friend base. I’m not particularly popular. I’m pretty much invisible, tbh. So PLEASE HELP ME. Please signal boost this! I NEED YOU TO MAKE THIS VIRAL. I CAN’T DO IT ALONE!

One of my favourite pop culture useless pieces of information that I know is the fact that trends in horror movies can tell you about the general fears of the world at any given time in cinematic history.
Sorta!
1940s - You have people still alive that remember Jack the Ripper, you have the Axeman of New Orleans and two world wars. The classics are being made for shock escapism and dark stalkers are also popular (usually trusting people turning out to be the enemy).
1950s - post-nuclear bomb. Giant monsters, or unknown blobs are the trend.
1970s/1980s - modern era begins, and serial killers are becoming known and prominent. Slasher films are the trend. The Cold War also drives the fear of invasion, so a few alien films come out in this time.
1990s - a horror movie lull, and lull in wars and disturbances.
2000s - fear of invasions and biological warfare. Zombie movies become the trend.
Here you go! It’s just a random article, but it’s a fun starting point. It outlines the ideas better than what I did above. Fears, politics etc all play a role.
Film has always been a reflection of our society. When world events occur or certain beliefs become widespread, they naturally shape our per
I literally did a 100k PhD thesis on this. I can recommend you a different scholarly book for every decade of American horror.
So I totally agree that horror movies are a reflection of global fears and traumas (that thesis ^ is actually really interesting) but this post is so wrong about the 90s.
In the 90s, Japan alone, gave us Ringu, Midori, Cure, and Audition
The 90s also gave us Cube, IT, Blair Witch, Army of Darkness, Jacob’s Ladder, SCREAM, Candyman, Misery, The Silence of the Lambs and SOOOO much more.
that crunchy vibe that 70s/80s movies have that modern movies simply cannot capture... that kind of quiet empty vibe to em that can be played for either bleakness or a peaceful energy... why do all modern movies (even the great and pretty ones) feel overproduced after watching an older film. what is it I can't put my finger on it but it's there I can feel it
Shot on film
No digital colour grading (today’s films are horribly over processed)
No in-the-computer composite layered scenes with virtual sets etc.
practical sets and effects
hand painted mattes / hand animated vfx
You used the light you had instead of endlessly tweaking it
Sociologically, people stopped going to movies as much in the late 1960s / early 70s because television had really taken off, the era of the ‘tv movie’ started, so studios greenlit a lot of low budget auteur films that had to focus on meaning & relationships instead of spectacle.
8. Pacing.
This is the biggest thing, and it's not even something most people will even realize they're noticing. Movies became more uniform in their structure, as hollywood found the "formula" for a hit movie. It means you lose quiet, peaceful scenes that don't fit into the pattern. That uniformity has done more to hurt the emotional tone of films than any visual effects tricks.
If you’ve gone to the movies recently, you may have felt a strangely familiar feeling: You’ve seen this movie before. Not this exact movie,
In 2005, Blake Snyder released a book: Save the Cat! It discussed movie "beats" and and gave an outline for movie pacing.
That outline has been followed like it's religious dogma for the majority of Hollywood movies ever since. It's enough that you can literally count the minutes in movies and say "ok, here comes the antagonist's big move."
it’s not just pacing but also average shot length (sometimes shortened to “ASL,” but not to be confused with american sign language.) a movie that only cuts every 12 seconds is gonna feel drastically different from a movie that cuts every 2.5 seconds.
i hope you have a very vampiric and homosexual pride month
A May Day Riddle
I washed my face in water
That had neither rained nor run,
And I dried it on a towel
That was neither woven nor spun.
This is an old Irish riddle that relates to the tradition of collecting the dew from flower petals, leaves and grasses early on Beltane (May Day) morning. The dew is used to bathe the face, then, facing the Sun, allowed to dry in the fresh morning air and golden sunbeams.

If any of y’all didn’t know, there’s a free online library, aka
https://openlibrary.org/
and I found like, twelve ebooks I’ve been wanting to read on there, and blasted through like three of them during the course of a boring-ass shift.
Guy there are books on magic on there.
There’s books on EVERYTHING there!
Wouldn’t this be bad for authors though? or is this like a normal library where they get /some/ money?
It’s like a normal library. Libraries can upload ebooks there and let people check them out through openlibrary if you have an openlibrary account, or it can point you to nearby libraries that have physical copies of the book for you to go and check out. If you check out books via openlibrary it counts towards the count of books checked out from the library that uploaded the ebook, and they can use it in their reporting and funding and stuff.
There’s like 150 libraries partnered with openlibrary so far.
They also have copies that you can check out if you are print-disabled.
You can also ‘sponsor a book’, which means you pay the cost of the ebook you want openlibrary to acquire, and then they can add it to their collection and let people check it out.
https://openlibrary.org/authors/OL26576A/Tamora_Pierce
I sure did!
And click on a title even if it says ‘no ebook available’ and scroll down, ‘cause sometimes that just means “all of the copies of ebooks are checked out right now but you can get on the waitlist when it’s back in”
This is part of the Internet Archive! I’ve posted about this before. Please go, it’s amazing.

As for artists, this is one way to step up your portfolio game- make your artbook its own work of art!!
