I saw Sound of Metal. A drummer(Ruben) for a metal band loses his hearing in the middle of a tour. He is driven to regain what he will most likely lose rather than to accept his new life. I just had to see this because I love Riz Ahmed's work and I had also recently tried to learn ASL through Skillshare. A very character centered film focusing of Riz Ahmed's character of Ruben. He goes through a major unexpected change and Ahmed gives an amazing performance of portraying the difficulties of dealing with that change. I saw Tokyo Godfathers... ...at around the holidays. I love Satoshi Kon films and this one has been a long time coming, especially since he didn't make many films before his passing. The holidays were the perfect time to see it finally. Tokyo Godfathers follows a group of homeless people, an estranged father, a cross dresser gay man, and a runaway girl, who find an abandoned infant on Christmas eve and try to care for it and reunite the child with its parents. In short, I really liked this. It had this happy yet sad feel to it almost akin to Taika Waititi's happy-sad storytelling. However the sad moments hit a bit harder in this. The harshness of their livelihoods show this grounded reality of being homeless, and bites more in the background of the bitter cold of winter. Through all this though, the characters really charmed me with how they pull together, how they care for each other in their own rough ways, and the sense of community they have with other people in the same predicament as opposed to the rest of the world that just moves on. The Christmas element is like a driving plot point in this movie because it's filled with little miracles throughout that push the story and characters forward. Sometimes to humourous effect and others a relief. Its just fun. But also sad, I may have forgotten to mention that maybe.
