I have type 2 Narcolepsy. Studies have shown that serious viral infections can cause people to develop Narcolepsy if they are already genetically susceptible to having it. This includes covid. That is what happened to me.

There's this weird tendency among fandom types where they'll take a character, and insist that they are fans of them, before changing their design, age, pronouns, backstory, blood type, species, hometown, favorite color, zodiac sign, medical history, and every other facet of their being.

They will then violently insist that this version is superior to the canon one and act like they "fixed" them and it's like. Buddy that's not the same character anymore. That's just your own oc commiting identity fraud. Like. I get the desire to experiment with different interpretations of a story. But first of all it's okay to just make an original character if that's what you really want to do. And second of all, are you even really a fan of the character you "fixed" if they're a completely different person afterwards?

Like. Idk dude for somebody who claims to be a fan you sure don't seem to like them as they are :/

okay. new video game companion concept: game that introduces a pretty run of the mill companion. but they always die for you. it’s with the player character’s name on their lips and devotion to your cause that they throw themselves into the fire. it’s nice to be loved that much.

sequel game that introduces their sibling as a new companion. and their entire questline revolves around getting their revenge on the player character of the first game, who took their fucking family away from them. maybe the world was saved, maybe some evil was defeated, but all they know is that one day, someone they loved never came home. and there’s someone to blame. they don’t know it’s you. they can only see the avatar of your choices.

the frustration of not being able to save this companion. of not being able to just tell this character that there was no way for them to live. is built in. btw. you can, in-universe, try to explain or justify it. or you can try to explain it as a game mechanic, break down the fourth wall and just try to tell this character that it was predetermined, there was a script, there’s no way that this sequel could account for that character living.

you can convince them that they’re not even real. you can’t convince them that the loss was worth it. and the only thing that was keeping you from being the target of their anger was that they didn’t know you existed before.

furthermore: it’s important that this character can’t actually do anything to you. like, well, obviously a video game character cannot hurt you, the real human person, but I also mean that awareness of themself as a game construct can’t end in them glitching the game or hacking themself into some big boss. the only thing you can grant them is the knowledge of what they are, of what you did, and of how little it mattered. so, yes, they can break the fourth wall, stop addressing your player character and start addressing you, maybe refuse your orders in combat or straight up leave your party, maybe even pettily fill your camp inventory with useless shit. but they can’t actually change the game itself. they can’t change the story, or the other characters, or the mechanics.

their anger towards you has to be completely powerless, you understand. it’s humiliating; even them raging at you just makes more entertainment. their sibling died, and that was just the game. they’re losing their shit because they can’t hurt you and they know it, and that’s just a secret extra cutscene for you to unlock. they hate you so much. and you made it possible because you wanted to see what would happen. you could have just let them take their revenge on the first game’s player character. they could have been satisfied. in your need to be absolved of your actions, you have ruined their life. again.

​it’s imperative that the action that fucks this all up is NOT that you played the first game and got their sibling killed, understand? that wasn’t your fault. it’s a game. you didn’t know. you aren’t morally at fault for enjoying a video game, even one where characters die. that would be insane.

the action that fucks it up is that you treat this character, in the sequel, not as a character in the game, but as a person who you need to justify yourself to. explain everything to. try to make understand that you aren’t at fault. that’s your crime. you violated that boundary for your own peace of mind; they never wanted to know that, there’s nothing that knowledge brings them but pain, and if the only way you can ask to be forgiven is to shred their reality to pieces and replace it with your own, then what the fuck are you doing.
