how about secret 9th option: Not exactly Ellie’s descent into villainy, but rather before it - her rose tinted-glasses of the world being slowly shattered as she fights to give her life meaning via a cure, only for it to mean nothing. The loss of hope and childhood innocence that sets up who she’ll become. The adults in her life telling her that yes, her life is going to mean something greater. She can undo the very thing that took her loved ones away from her. Until Joel tells her the truth, she essentially thinks for years that the whole thing was just an idealistic, naive dream she had to make a difference and atone for her survival’s guilt. The one person who seemed to defy the apocalypse slowly becoming the jaded survivor Joel/everyone else is.
