Celaeno
-
In Virgil's Aeneid, Aeneas and his men who fled the Troy reach the harpy island. Men slaughter and feast on wild cattle that belonged to the bird-maidens. Enraged by their behaviour, Celaeno (the dark harpy) curses them. She says that Troyans will reach Italy, but until then, they will suffer from big famine.
" you shall go to Italy, and enter her harbours freely: but you will not surround the city granted you with walls until dire hunger, and the sin of striking at us, force you to consume your very tables with devouring jaws."

So that bought I book the other day from 1901 that was signed by the illustrator, Reginald Savage (link). I was looking into Savage's work out of curiosity and found out that he was one of the artists featured in 'The Dial: An Occasional Publication' a 'little' magazine about art/lit, which was published between 1889-1897
The magazine was edited by Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon. The art above in order is by Ricketts, Shannon, and my man Mr Savage. How was he pulling that off with woodcut. The detail is astounding. Apparently they all learned how to wood cut together, and this magazine revived the art form, along with typography.
Also, Rickett's and Shannon illustrated Oscar Wilde's A House Of Pomegranates, and Rickett's did the cover for The Sphinx. I'd never heard of these guys. Also they 'lived together for most of their lives' which... You know, 1800s.
(More info about The Dial here.)
“The rainbow of Art is still there for Hope to look through, all pleasantness has not been snatched from the meadows and hills of Nature's royalty, Art has been, Art is, so the present touches wings with the past." - Ricketts (Vol 2 page 50)
