RIP Marjane Satrapi, author of the amazing graphic novels Persepolis about living during the fundamentalist revolution in Iran in the 70’s and 80’s. She also created the animated movie based on the graphic novels, which is where these gifs come from.

Reblogging in honor of Marjane Satrapi, one of THE great graphic novelists. Her comic Persepolis was a crucial text for shaping my belief that comics can deeply explore identity, culture, politics, and history.
has anyone ever actually seen a shareholder or are we just supposed to believe they actually exist
I did once when I was working in a coffee shop. He was on a business call loudly talking about some tech speculation. When I asked him how it went a few days later, he panicked and asked how I knew such sensitive information. From this I gather they are of weak constitution, and startle easily
As a Greek, in response to the current controversy about Matt Damon being cast as Odysseus, I'd just like to share that one of the moments that changed my brain chemistry as a kid was reading a novelized version of the Odyssey and coming across the following description of Odysseus when Circe sees him for the first time and thinks he's hot: "his hair curled like a clematis and his eyes were very brown".
So may I present my own casting choice for Odysseus:
Excuse me???
you are right and you should say it.
Is this the face of a man who would put his own infant in front of a plow to avoid going to war?
Absolutely not
You know who would try that shit?
Is this the face of a man who would defy the very gods to get home to his wife?
You know who would defy the gods just to show he could get away with it?

Vote for progressives. #DSA #ZohranMamdani
dont forget he also did homeless encampment sweeps in the coldest part of winter ! :)
If you’re going to criticize Mamdani, the current face of democratic socialist politics in the US, then please be specific about it instead of contributing to unwarranted criticism. The encampment sweeps were reinstituted after public backlash over people literally freezing to death. He’s faced a lot of criticism for this, but there is vital context. The sweeps were reinstituted under a code blue state of emergency, and largely involved nonprofit and volunteer organizations to help get people who were at risk of freezing off the streets during a crisis. I don’t like the idea of homeless people getting kicked out of encampments either but he didn’t sicc K-9 units on random tent cities he was trying to put together an emergency outreach network on week 3 of being in office.
He reinstituted public sweeps in February to be conducted by the department of homeless services rather than police. That article also acknowledges that he didn’t expand cityFHEPS like he’d previously indicated. I’m not sure if he ever commented why he did that but on the outside that doesn’t look great for sure.
Here’s an article about how Mamdani shut down the Bellevue citing unlivable conditions and moving intake elsewhere (ie attempting to improve the shelter framework) here’s a politico article about a man who unfortunately committed suicide during the emergency closure pointing out how nuanced this situation is, and an article I like less but is really the most current thing I’ve found about his Block by Block program which includes building new housing and getting people into low-cost housing which is vacant (emphasizing fair conditions for construction laborers which draws criticism about cost no less).
He is not perfect. He has made decisions that I disagree with. But like. Come on.

A+ weird little dude, but I'm equally fascinated by the choice of music.

Dangers of working on a set.
That’s what I said.
Okay but you forgot the best part! During the scene where Aragorn, Gandalf and the other Main CharaktersTM ride ahead to go shout at the gate (and talk to the mouth of sauron in the extended edition) they were very firmly told only to ride up ahead “this far” because that area was cleared and beyond that it wasn’t.
But. Viggo Mortensen is absolutely mad and lead them just…. a bit farther than that. Everyone else was very scared they might blow up any second. Viggo said it “added a little extra tension”.
#they just don’t make behind the scenes stories like lotr anymore
Viggo was just Like That™ for the whole trilogy, taking method acting to extreme levels:
he would spend multiple days walking overland to locations in full pack, sword, & armour when everyone else was travelling in trucks
refused to use any prop swords that weren’t actual steel
basically lived in the forest in-costume, sleeping rough under the sky, even fishing & foraging for his food when possible
often spent hours in the barn just bonding with the horses. He adopted the horse he rode, Uranus, after filming ended
repaired all his own gear by hand, which was often since he never took it off
had a tooth knocked out during filming but had the crew simply glue it back in place so they could keep filming
the instructor who taught everyone swordplay said Viggo was the best swordsman he had ever trained
carried his sword literally everywhere & practiced non-stop, resulting in the cops being called when locals reported “a wild man swinging a sword around his head" outside a gym in Wellington
an orc actor fucked up & accidentally threw a dagger directly into Viggo’s face, but Viggo just deflected it with his sword. They kept that shot
infamously broke 3 toes kicking that helmet but stayed in-character & sold his very real scream as part of the scene. They also kept that shot
Viggo insists on doing his own stunts; in The Two Towers where Aragorn is unconscious & floating down the river, the strong current pulled him underwater for so long that a rescue team had to go in to save him. Viggo survived by grabbing a boulder on the riverbed and pulling himself to the surface
It’s probably more accurate to say that Aragorn played Viggo Mortensen in the off season, so I’m 100% unsurprised to hear he put a whole crowd of fellow actors in genuine mortal peril for a 12% increase in authenticity
“We've always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tons of our chocolate.”
It's always ethical to steal from Nestle.
You said something in “Smith” which I hope I grasped, and there was a feeling almost of recognition. An odd feeling of grief overcame me when I read it. I cannot explain my feelings any clearer. It was like hearing a piece of music from way back, except that it was nearer poetry by Graves’ definition. Thank you very much for writing it.
Terry Pratchett, in a letter to J. R. R. Tolkien, 22 November 1967
Thank you very much for your letter. The first one that I have received with regard to Smith of Wootton Major. You evidently feel about the story very much as I do myself. I can hardly say more.
J. R. R. Tolkien, in reply to Pratchett’s letter, 24 November 1967
This is the first I've ever seen this and it makes me wonder if it's why Pratchett was always so conscientious about responding to letters from kids.
If you were wondering: in November 1967, Terry Pratchett was 19 years old.
And he did in fact say on at least one occasion that it was this that pushed him to always engage with his own fans in the same kind and conscientious manner.
Stole this from somewhere but i think it’s appropriate
This world is so beautiful. People are shipping Ryan gosling and markiplier. Because they were both in space movies you see
Tumblr users love to do things like this. I DO NOT mean this in a mocking way to be completely clear. I think it's cute. It reminds me of back in the day when people shipped jack frost and elsa cause they both have ice powers.
Or like the superwholock thing. Tumblr users like to go "I like this thing AND that thing.. What if my FAVORITE CHARACTERS met each other? Would that be cool or WHAT!" And the thing is it's absolutely adorable
You can say it's cringe or bad or missing the point of the movie all you want but I don't care. Yeah man, I bet it would be really cute if there was a happy ending and the blood murder man (in space) got saved by the dorky science teacher (in space) and they had yaoi moments. I'm so glad you're having fun

imagine coming out as a biphobe during pride month because some other queer people play with touys differently than you. so much yikes
Literally every pride month someone comes out of the woodwork to be like “Just a reminder I don’t think bisexual people are real queers”. It’s like really shitty groundhogs day
