Harry was an outcast due to a childhood filled with abuse and neglect.
Vernon made him an outcast by dismissing his claims of magic, berating him, locking him in a CLOSET and putting bars on his window, and let’s face it, even though her editor made her cut it out, Jo intended for there to be physical abuse.
Petunia made him an outcast by enabling and contributing to this abuse, as well as making Harry do dozens of chores while doting on Dudley.
Dudley made him an outcast by bullying him and threatening any students at school who wanted to be his friends.
And the rest of the wizarding world made him an outcast when they bullied him for being an outsider.
Harry James Potter became an outcast the moment he was placed with The Dursleys.
This makes even more sense when you consider why Dumbledore deliberately made Harry an outcast.
Think about it What would Harry have been like if he had grown up in the wizarding world? Or, to put it another way, what would Harry have been like if he had grown up in a world where magic was the norm?
He would have taken magic for granted. He would have been less likely (especially as he got older) to view Dumbledore as a wise mentor and more likely to see him as flawed and capable of bad decisions. He would have seen both the world and Dumbledore as ordinary, with their good points and bad points.
But Dumbledore didn’t need a well-adjusted boy who took magic and the magical world for granted. He needed a child who would love the magical world unstintingly, even irrationally, because it was a haven from neglect and abuse. Even more, he needed a child who feared this world becoming evil and who therefore would not question someone that he saw as the ultimate authority, especially if he believed that obeying that authority would keep the world safe.
Even if obedience meant his own death.
Dumbledore wanted a martyr who would die for the wizarding world, because he believed that Voldemort could not die until Harry did. Which was why he left Harry with the Dursleys and let them neglect and emotionally abuse him for the next ten years.
She’s technically a monster too. She might not look it at first glance and seems mostly human, but it isn’t deniable even despite her looks compared to the other monsters.
But she realizes that she is still not like the rest of the monsters either and may not have entirely the same experiences as them, which is why she feels that she might not belong to or deserve to go to the support group. By sometimes passing as human, she feels she isn’t worthy of the space.
The sad reality though is even though she’s mostly human in appearance, that tail she has undeniably would still cause her some struggle. Humans are still gonna look at that tail and think she’s a freak. There are probably still accommodations she needs because of the tail that she may still struggle to have access to. Even if it is just the tail, that tail is still enough to other her from humans and cause her problems and discrimination.
She should get to belong in that support group even if she gets told she’s not monster “enough”. She still shares some of the same struggles as them that are caused by being a monster, and needs support.
This is an excellent demonstration of the flaws in the concept of passing privilege. Bravo to the artist.

Picking the one fic is always a hard job for a reccer, especially covering many tropes! Chances are I’m forgetting a bunch, let me know if you’re curious about any trope I didn’t mention. Again, these are personal picks based on my very personal preferences, so they might not work for everyone :) I’m curious to know about your faves, anon!
i was hoping to have a neat 10 fics, but with exams coming up & other miscellaneous things, i know i won’t have time to read a full length fic & i refuse to rec a fic half-heartedly/without giving a genuine review just because i can’t recall the plot well enough. but that just means more rec lists for later :D
so! here are nine fics i’ve read & loved recently! same as before, these are subjective recs, not comprehensive (the list, that is) & in no particular order

1. Who We Are in the Shadows by @quicksilvermaid
i was always hesitant to read creature!harry fics, this was actually the first i read & let me tell you how little i regret it. the way the author wrote draco is so utterly beguiling, you simply can’t help but be curious about him. & if you’re harry potter who has always had an unhealthy level of curiosity concerning draco malfoy, well, this draco would be irresistible. & he is! harry in this fic is darker, more cynical; he’s allowed the wizarding world’s biases to get through to him & it’s beautiful watching draco break down that wall of self-hatred. throughout the fic, you can feel harry’s curiosity over draco & what he’s up to (think sixth year, but adult drarry & no voldy) like it’s a tangible thing. the slow build is exquisite, peak enemies to allies to lovers dynamic.
2. A Lick and a Promise by @tackytigerfic
one of those fics that feel like they were written for me. friends with benefits who are secretly in love with each other is an exquisite trope & the author has written it so beautifully, ugh. the softness, the domesticity, the yearning— *chef’s kiss*. while reading it, i got the feeling that draco & harry were eventually going to sort their shit out & get together & maybe that should have spoiled the story for me, but the progression is all so natural, it just felt right. the plot & the romance are melded together so beautifully, it’s practically an effortless read (if that even makes sense??)
3. Away Childish Things by @letteredlettered
this is one of those fics everyone fell in love with & i’m happy to report, so did i. i put off reading it for quite long because i wasn’t sure if the de-ageing trope was for me, but you never know until you’ve tried & boy am i glad i tried. the way adult draco interacts with de-aged harry is incredibly sweet & it’s even better to see draco understanding adult harry better by spending time with young harry. it’s heartwarming to see harry experience, albeit briefly, what a happy childhood should be like. i don’t want to spoil the fic, so i can’t actually talk much about my favourite part but suffice to say, post chapter 5 things get even more interesting 👀 all in all, it’s a story of reckoning with the past in a completely unexpected manner, & understanding each other (& themselves) better in the process.
4. The Ordeal of Being Known by @lou-isfake
the way draco & harry’s relationship builds in this is so incredibly organic & yet it’s not at the same time? i don’t know how to explain— although they’re essentially in a situation where harry has to open himself up fully to draco, the way the dynamic is written, all the little ways that draco rights the balance by giving parts of himself to harry as well, make everything that much more organic. the plot sneaks up on you in the best possible way. when you’re reading it for the first time, there’s this oh moment where everything falls into place. when you read it a second time, you get to savour all the little pieces of foreshadowing that you missed the first time around. it’s really a win-win situation either way!
5. Way Down We Go by @xiaq
i’ve already listed this on my for the romance fic list, but it deserves a mention here as well, because throughout the fic, although i was luxuriating in the domesticity & fluff, the why of it all was just constantly nagging me. i wanted to know why things were the way they were (can’t rlly get more specific than that without spoiling the fic i’m afraid). ft. endlessly amusing slytherin/gryffindor banter, jane austen references(!!!) & a dash of Good Omens
6. Dwelling by aideomai
my god. i’ve read this 2/3 times & i always forget the “this is not an AU” reminder. that’s how good the story is, the way it transfixes you, pulls you in until you forget this is not an AU. & that’s exactly what happens in the story too, isn’t it? this is one of those stories i can’t actually summarise in any meaningful way— all i’ll say is, if you’re looking for a story that’ll pull you in, something poignant & aching, this is it.
7. Dragons Don’t Know Paradise by @teacup-tai
this is the AU i didn’t know i needed. i usually stay away from muggle AUs (truly, my usual taste is very boring & straight-laced) but i stumbled upon this, read the first chapter & couldn’t stop. it is so tender & so touching, my god. wolfstar raising harry makes my heart melt. it’s everything harry deserved as a kid & so so lovely to read. the way harry cares about draco— i have no words. even when he’s angry, he still cares. truly, i was not expecting the twist we got & when it was finally revealed, i gasped. i didn’t know how it would end & the moral ambiguity of it all (hdjdks i hope i’m not putting you off, i swear it’s nothing extremely terrible) makes everything that much more interesting, because the reader is forced to think, to put yourself in the shoes of the characters. definitely read the tags on this one, but if it sounds up your alley, i would 10/10 recommend
8. In the Hand by aideomai
two aideomai fics, because they’re just that good. this one was so intriguing!! the whole multi-verse concept, the multiple dracos & harrys with diverse back stories, some familiar some so totally not— ghhhg brilliant. esp now that i’m tinkering with writing long-form fics, i’m even more aware of how incredible it is that aideomai created such rich & distinct characterisations of the same two boys. i can’t say much about the plot without giving it away, but oh my god read it if you haven’t. (also read Intelligence, after this. it’s an afterward and it’s set in one of the most intriguing harry’s & draco’s world from In the Hand. i don’t have the words to describe this to you, or how it made me feel, and i won’t try to)
9. Things Worth Knowing by femmequixotic, noeon
whenever i read this, i’m taken by surprise at the genuine anger that harry & draco have towards each other in the beginning of this fic & that’s because of the sweet ending that stays with me even once the story is over. it’s truly a journey from enemies to lovers. harry’s denial of his very real feelings for draco is written so masterfully, you catch yourself rationalising it yourself, thinking yes, they can’t possibly have a real relationship together. and then chapter 8 happens & you’re like oh shit. the emotions in this fic are so well explored, which is exactly what hooks you so well. you get completely caught up in the emotional turmoil both boys are going through & it’s incredible. this is one of those fics that really makes me feel what the characters are feeling & that makes for such a rich reading experience.
