Octopus filmed changing colours while sleeping.
i wonder what they are dreaming about
Changing colors duh
What’s really cool about this is that cephalopod (octopus, squid, etc.) intelligence evolved completely separately from intelligence in tetrapods (which includes primates, dolphins, crows… basically any other intelligent animals you can think of). Cephalopods are very, very far away from us on the tree of life. For context, you and a starfish are more closely related than you and an octopus. The last common ancestor of humans and cephalopods was the so-called Urbilaterian, the hypothetical first animal with a left-right symmetric body. This animal almost certainly had, at most, an extremely simple nervous system, without anything resembling a brain.
All this is to say that the fact that this octopus appears to be dreaming means one of two things. Either
a) dreaming is a very, very old thing indeed, going directly back to the Urbilaterian. This would mean that almost every animal, from insects to starfish to sea slugs to newts, is likely to have the ability to dream in some capacity or another (unless they have specifically lost it by evolutionary simplification).
or
b) dreaming evolved entirely independently in cephalopods when they developed greater intelligence. This would suggest, at least, that there’s something very fundamental about dreaming related to intelligence itself, which causes it to emerge independently when sufficient intelligence arises.
Needless to say, either of these outcomes would be really very cool.
“Way out yonder, where the crawdads sing.”
— Delia Owens, from Where the Crawdads Sing
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
“She knew the years of isolation had altered her behavior until she was different from others, but it wasn’t her fault she’d been alone. Most of what she knew, she’d learned from the wild. Nature had nurtured, tutored, and protected her when no one else would.”
“I wasn’t aware that words could hold so much. I didn’t know a sentence could be so full.”
— Delia Owens, Where the Crawdads Sing

This sounds like it’s being sung by a passive-aggressive 1920s radio host wearing a very dapper suit and threatening me with a cartoonishly small pistol, bearing a large grin on his face that indicates that he will not hesitate to put a hole in my forehead, not for a second

some of my favourite any way the wind blows quotes out of context
“Turn off that music!” Fiona shouts from the next room. “No emo shit in my flat.” I am emo shit.
She hands me a slightly smaller slice—fair enough, I didn’t kill the Mage—and sits down next to Simon to pour the milk.
“You didn’t get that vibe from me either, Baz. You’ve got no vibe … check.”
“No,” I repeat. “I can touch you less gently, but I won’t love you less kindly.”
(Genuinely not sure whether she means the vampire thing or the gay thing.)
“I’m texting Bunce,” he says. “Like I have time for another boyfriend … Your dysfunction is a full-time job.”
(For someone who is afraid of looking gay in public, he sure gets off on public displays of affection.) (That’s probably connected.)
“Because…” he whines. “Because it’s kinda hot.”
“Just know,” he says, “that I’d do anything for you. That I’d let you do anything to me. There’s nothing about you I don’t want.”
“If you can’t be gay at Ikea,” Snow reasoned, “where can you?”
I’m an “I love you” gun with the safety off, a finger constantly on the trigger.
“What a ridiculous creature. Happy that I put butter on his sandwich. As if I wouldn’t make the world spin backwards if I thought he’d like it better that way.” – Baz, Any Way the Wind Blows
I took a quote from Tumblr (got permission) and made it into art.
The spacing is off but I like how it turned out.
“I’ll have enough books when they fill my room like the stars fill the sky.”
— E.V. Fairfall
Surrounded by books you will never feel the sour taste of loneliness.
