You’re right. Researchers are lying. They’re just trying to hide the truth that stories where Mario has sex with Charizard is inherently more interesting than actual books. Just because people are getting better at spotting false information, getting better at finding true information, and have the ability to do all this quickly and are smart enough to dismiss bullshit without bothering to read through it doesn’t mean we’re paying less attention.

You know what REALLY inhibits the attention span of someone? Stress. Trying to care and act about too many stressful and horrific things at once. You know what gives panic attacks when you start a new show? Triggers that didn’t come with any warning. Finding out the reason you started the show in the first place was a lie.

Fuck right off with blaming our outlets for problems that borderline are lies anyway. Warning tags are to ensure that people can avoid triggering fucking material and FUCK YOU for implying that their presence is there to ruin stories. As if knowing what will happen would ruin a story for someone who actually cares about the material. There’s a reason we can binge the same long story multiple times and it has nothing to fucking do with needing to engage with familiar material.

I feel like you severely misunderstood this post, which in turn caused you to feel like it was a personal attack.

The OP of that post links numerous studies to back up the claims that they made in the notes. I dont think that stating “Humanity having basically unlimited access to the whole of The Human Condition isnt necessarily a good thing” is particularly wrong, especially considering how technology has evolved from even a decade ago.

When compared to when humanity first came into existence up to now, modern technology isnt even a blip on the map. We really Dont Know how and in what ways the way we use technology negatively affects our overall wellbeing because there isnt really isnt a precident for any of this, as much of a Boomer-esque thing that is to say.

I dont think that its too much of a stretch to say that having unlimited and immediate access to whatever you want would take a toll on your overall attention span, nor do I think that @therealklt was trying to say that Fanfiction Isnt Real Literature, or that using fanfiction as a form of escapism from 2020 is necessarily a bad thing.

Just be careful of What and How you consume content online, and try not to develop Terminal Internet Brainrot along the way. Although that last warning might be coming a little too late.

I don’t disagree with studies and I don’t think that there’s no risk to using the internet. Frankly, I don’t give a damn if people have a short attention span either - especially because lot of that is un/diagnosed adhd or other neurodivergencies/mental illnesses, and people are consistently arseholes about that.

I take issue with the second reply OP made, which was scathing, condescending, absolutely 100% implied that fanfiction isn’t valid literature, and… hold on give me a moment… oh yeah, literally shamed having warning tags - and by extension, everyone who needs them to safely interact with fandom. hey, so that’s the situation. we owe a grand total of $367 to our power and internet companies. each of my doctor’s appointments has a $50 co-pay. i’m literally booked 1-2 times weekly on doctor’s appointments for the entirety of march. i’m naturally despondent, and hopeless, and listless, and near-victorian in my fucking despair here. i don’t know what to do except for write another post.

i’m working but it’s basically only paying enough to keep us all fed and put gas in the tank. i have no idea how to crawl out of debt while also being put through the ringer to find out if i’ll need a major surgery that’ll just sink us further into debt.
