Annotated for those with comprehension or reading difficulties like myself
People should be allowed to have their opinions about Redacted as a channel. Redacted is certainly not perfectāno form of media ever isābut it exists for consumption, for interpretation, and for enjoyment by those who resonate with it. Media, by nature, invites different responses from different audiences, and that diversity of reaction is what keeps creative spaces thriving (Hall, 1980). Some people may love Redacted for its storytelling and character development; others may dislike it for its tone or themesāand thatās entirely valid.
However, what many in the fandom seem to forget is that everyone is allowed to have opinions. Itās concerning how quickly discussions about preference or interpretation spiral into hostility, especially when nuance is involved. For instance, if I say I like Marcusānot as a person, but as a characterāthat distinction should be understood. Thereās a difference between admiring how a character is written and condoning their actions. My appreciation lies in the complexity of his role: the suspense, the narrative weight, the way his flaws are used to challenge the audience. It doesnāt mean I think heās a good guy or that I like himāit means I think heās well written.
And yet, people often take such comments as moral endorsements, which demonstrates a lack of media literacyāa concept referring to understanding how media texts are constructed and interpreted (Buckingham, 2003). Ironically, itās often the same people who claim to love āmorally greyā characters that struggle most with this concept
If someone claims to love morally grey characters but fails to understand the actions of characters like Darlinā, Cutie, or Geordi, theyāre missing the very point of moral complexity in fiction. These characters are written with intentional flawsāto reflect the imperfection of real people and to create emotional depth. Liking Porter or William for their moral ambiguity while condemning others like Darlinā for similar flaws is inconsistent and, frankly, hypocritical.
Fictional empathy isnāt about excusing bad behaviorāitās about understanding motivation. Thatās how complex storytelling works: it invites empathy for imperfection. To reject that is to miss the entire point of character-driven narratives.
The question, then, is simple: why claim to love morally grey characters if you cannot comprehend the moral grey in others? To praise one archetype while rejecting a similar for the same narrative reasoning is, bluntly, intellectually inconsistent. Imagine if I said I was obsessed with Vega as both a character and a person, despite his questionable actionsābut then turned around and said I didnāt understand how Cutie could still be a good person despite their boundary issues. The contradiction there is exactly my point.
Writers craft morally grey characters to make audiences question their own assumptions. Characters like Marcus arenāt written to be ālikedāātheyāre written to make you think, to make you uncomfortable, and to make you ask, āWhy do I still care about them despite what they did?ā Thatās good writingāsomething Erik has done exceptionally well.
To be clear, Iām not saying itās wrong to dislike a character. Taste is subjective; if a character doesnāt resonate with you, thatās fine. Dislike is valid. But when it comes to claiming objectivityāas in, declaring a character as āobjectively badā simply because they have flawsāthatās a misunderstanding of fiction itself. Characters are designed to make mistakes. Those mistakes are often what make them interesting and memorable. This is foundational to narrative structure and character writing (Booker, 2004).
The inability to separate moral judgment from literary appreciation reflects a worrying decline in critical thinking across fandom spaces. You can acknowledge a characterās wrongdoings while still appreciating their role in the story. You can criticize without vilifying. Thatās the beauty of artāitās meant to be interpreted, debated, and understood from multiple angles.
Enjoying a character doesnāt mean endorsing their behavior. Itās like studying a villain in literatureāyou can find them fascinating without supporting what they did. In psychology, this is called moral disengagement for narrative immersionāour brains separate fiction from real life because we understand that stories explore extremes safely (Tamborini et al., 2017). That separation between fiction and reality is key to understanding why stories matter.
Fiction allows us to explore moral ambiguity safely. Real life demands accountability, but fiction lets us observe it from a distance. That distance is what makes it art, not advocacy. Condemning characters as if they were real people collapses that boundary.
Of course, emotional reactions to fiction are natural. We connect deeply with stories because they reflect our values. But emotional discomfort isnāt proof that something is wrongāitās proof that the writing is effective.
Ultimately, stories are mirrors, not manuals. If you only engage with characters who are morally spotless, youāre not engaging with fictionāyouāre engaging with propaganda. Itās the flaws, contradictions, and mistakes that make art worth discussing.

If you understand why Iām making this post, you probably recognize how irrational it is to claim to love the āedgiest of the edgyā characters while rejecting others for making one irrational decision. Fictional characters exist to explore human imperfection. If that concept feels foreign, then perhaps the issue isnāt the charactersāitās the readerās unwillingness to engage critically.
Iām always open to discussion. If you disagree, I encourage you to share your thoughts. Educate me, challenge me, or start a respectful debate. My inbox is open, my anons are on. Dialogue is how understanding growsāand fandom, at its best, should be a space where ideas are shared, not silenced.

"Treasure shouldn't be pushing his boundaries" Feels like when people say "Angel shouldn't have forced/tricked David into shifting" (I don't have the energy to fully unpack why I disagree. Go find my rewatch posts that explains some of it)
"This is another Geordi/Cutie š" No tf it's not. First of all, the two situations are hardly comparable outside of empowered/unempowered relationship. Secondly, Cutie let their untreated trauma and anxiety cross a clearly stated, serious boundary and they got consequences for it.
Please learn the difference between breaking down a protective barrier someone is keeping in an effort to not be hurt (especially early in a relationship) and an actual boundary.
Treasure pushed, Porter snapped, they both probably regret the whole conversation but the idea that either of them has to be "in the wrong" for an argument to occur is kind of crazy isn't it?
What the fuck is wrong with yāall?š They coerced him to shift. Coercion ā actual consent. He DIDNāT want to shift. But he felt he had to before he was ready because of Angelās fucking pestering. You are indeed biased because what you just said sounds crazy as fuck actually. Hope this helps.
ok so i think this is being a little blown out of proportion lmao
something i often end up repeating is, angel had no concept of how big of a deal shifting is because they had very little knowledge of empowered culture. angel/david have always had the dynamic of angel being playfully irritating and david playfully being kind of mean/snarky back. angel is used to this dynamic and probably genuinely didnt know any better
thatās not to say david doesnāt have the right to get upset or like it was okay for angel to pester them, but i donāt think theyāre this complete villain. he does, angels lack of knowledge doesnāt invalidate how he felt, but i think he couldāve been more understanding. directly conveyed he was being genuine and serious instead of being kinda condescending in response.
also not that this is really like a point to justify angel, but we know david šyou canāt make that man do a single thing he does not actually want to. like a mutual of mine put it, iām sure it just felt ārushedā rather than angel was making him do something he didnāt want to ( @kasperbasper thank u for that)
In the beginning, one of David's DEFINING CHARACTER TRAITS is his dogshit (no pun intended) communications skills. (and he and angels character traits come in conflict before they learn to synergize)
Literally E V E R Y ISSUE in his and Angel's early relationship is directly caused by his inability to be direct, vulnerable, and/or honest with his feelings with others. It takes until the literal INVERSION for this trait to go away-- and it doesn't even go away completely.
is it fair to rush your partner into something? no, but if you have zero explanation of the context as to why it's important, and he doesn't take you seriously, you push. Angel wanted to connect with him, that's the core of it. They wanted to see every part of their partner and be sure that their trust was mutual. I do think they were annoying about it, but we literally have confirmation from David that he finds that trait endearing.
One conversation where David lays out how important this is to him and the context behind it could have solved all of this before it went bad. That's all it would take. otherwise, of course, things turned out the way they did, Angel isn't a mind reader and David repressed his emotions. they had literally NO WAY of knowing how uncomfortable he was because he LITERALLY HID IT FROM THEM.
idk if anyoneās got a crush on me, but iāll take a win whenever i can lmao (but also you should totally tell me if you do, it can be our little secretš š»āØ)

Background information;
The listeners name is āSnowflakeā btw
The listener, a determined contra-fire elemental, has been searching for their D(a)emon friend who has gone missing years back. Theyāve tried all they could yet no method seemed to prevailā¦So theyāve resorted to The Sodality.
The Soldality, an established group of Seers, has failed to mention that if the missing D(a)emon is in fact in Ariaā¦then they wonāt be much help as Seers are unable to see past Elegy and into Aria.
The man are speaking with isā¦an experienced member of The Sodality. Not only is he their personal scapegoat, but he hates his job. Why? It simply isnāt what he saw in store for him.
However, Emerson, the claimed scapegoat, has been made aware of this caseā¦it peaks his interest all too well. Heās used around The SodalityāThrown at cases that seem too futileā¦too regrettable. Why? Itās because his sight only works when heās able to focusā¦and, well, the listener (Snowflake) being very attractive does not help.
This is an audio of Emerson explaining to Snowflake that they (Seers) might not be able to see their friendās (The D(a)emon) current status because they might be in Ariaā¦a place that Seers cannot see into.
