Real sound! No stupid music! You can hear it say moo!
I went back and watched it again with sound on for the moo, and I wasn't sorry.
possibly the best ever piece of american sports journalism
"This morning, we posted NBC anchor Mary Carillo's 2004 rant about badminton because we had never seen it before and we wanted to share it with the world. Carillo just wrote an email to us, explaining how that monologue made it on the air:
"Can't believe that thing's still around. I was hosting a morning show in Athens that covered a lot of badminton—some table tennis too, but badminton, I'd been assured, was going to be "the curling of the Summer Games." (!) There was no script for that rant—just a little dead time—but it got some chuckles and a head shake from my producer. It was a pretty loose show—I'd already explained a team handball's size by comparing it against various members of the melon family, and when I found out that equestrian horses were listed as "equipment" I did a rant on the fact that horses needed passports to get into the country and dramatically produced one, so surely they needed an identity upgrade..
"That sort of nonsense got me a hosting gig on Torino's Olympic Ice show, which is still one of my all-time favorite scams. Don't know if it's still kicking around, but maybe my salute to Guido The Zamboni Guy is still out there from that wackadoodle show..
"Don't know how I stay employed,carillo
Mary Carillo is cool as hell. Also, someone please bring us her salute to Guido the Zamboni Guy.

Her salute to Guido the Zamboni Guy at the Torino Olympics
no matter how bad it gets it cannot possibly be as bad as it was this time last year when i was using all my free time to replace the music in captain america the winter soldier with 2000s pop hits

The practice of pacing: choosing presence, patience, and self-respect in every decision.
Blog post by a sympathetic and knowledgeable occupational therapist who specialises in long Covid & ME/CFS. No magic bullets in this. Maybe nothing majorly new for people who have been diagnosed and reading on the topic for a good while.
I wish depression were an emergency. I wish someone could take one look at how sick I am and go “oh my god, we need to get you to a hospital!” and then when we get there I get rushed into surgery and the surgeons say “it’s a good thing you brought her here when you did, this is a seriously advanced case” and then they put me under and spend the next ten hours pulling metres of long, sticky black strands of gunk out of my body, throwing it immediately into an incinerator so that it can’t infect anyone else. And then they could stitch me back up and I could rest a few days, and when I leave the hospital everyone can see how much better I am and they congratulate me saying “well done, you’ve been so brave, I’m so glad you’re ok. I love you.”

fucked up how no matter how much literature you read there’s always literature that you haven’t read. and in fact there’s literature that you CANT read because it’s “only published in a language you don’t read” or “it is translated but every translation is straight up bullshit” or “it’s no longer extant” or something stupid like that and so it’s always going to be literature you’ve never read. you can’t read it all. sick n twisted
Oh, don't give up hope.
Decided to buy the ebook just based on this
Great choice it fucked me up

The Hand – Annabelle Dinda
Every time a guy writes a song, he's a cowboy, a sailor Playing with the world in his palm like the first pioneer. Every time he opens his mouth, it's a loud movie trailer Clipping every image and sound he thinks proves he was here. A hand, a spike, a physical fight, A flash of light, a curtain, A toll, a tithe, the passage of time, A height, a dive, a burden, A girl, a night, a typical type, A siren in the water, A scroll, a nod, a message from God, A son, a Holy Father. Every time a guy writes a song, he's a sailor, a cowboy Holding out the world in his palm like he made it himself. Every time I open my mouth, I think, "Wow, what a loud noise!" Still on the soapbox, just hoping I seem underwhelmed. The hand, the pen, the writing again, The Wind around the Willow, The felt, the ice, the passage of time, The melting down the window, The ‘now’, the ‘then’, the thinking of "when", The bottle in the ocean, The strike, the pause, the message from - God forbid she shows emotion. This isn't rage, it's worth a mention. This is a fake internal tension. Sometimes, I spread out one opinion And stand on its back to gauge attention. This isn't rage, it's too specific. I like to hate symbolic limits. This is no statement, I'm complicit. This is a dream, GOD put me in it. A hand, a spike, a physical fight, The Wind around the Willow, A toll, a tithe, the passage of time, The melting down the window, The now, the then, the thinking of "when", The siren in the water, The strike, the pause, a message from God. Does that make me His daughter? A hand, a shove, a valley, a jump, A score under the wire, Just sweep me up, just sweep me up And take me somewhere higher, Just sweep me up, just sweep me up And take me somewhere higher, Just sweep me up, just sweep me up And take me somewhere higher.
Holy shit this song hits like a fucking truck
I feel like I just had a religious experience
An open Tumblr letter to younger fans, from a 77-year-old TOS fangirl
* who has shipped Spirk since that night in 1967 that Amok Time first aired * and helped storm NBC to keep TOS on the air for a 3rd season * and wrote fanfic way back in the day * and was privileged to be around for the earliest days of fandom, when Leonard used to come to your house if that’s where the fan club was meeting and sit on the sofa with you in that Spock hair cut and eat cake
All of you who are writing TOS/AOS fan fiction and creating fan art now: remember, YOU are the ones shaping the traditions of fandom. You have inherited the kingdom. Bless you for keeping it vibrant, growing, alive. In fifty years, you will be the ones who are remembered for molding it and handing it down to the future. It probably doesn’t feel like now, but you are making history.
Your current addiction to TOS and the feels you get when you contemplate the love between Jim and Spock will be with you for life. It won’t always be in the forefront; you will sometimes go years, sometimes go a decade, without Star Trek being more than a passing thought. But then something will remind you and every consuming feeling you feel right now will come rushing back, every bit as powerful and deep and strong as it is today. All there, right where you left it.
The friendships you make in fandom will be with you for life. Like all friendships, they will wax and wane as the focus of your life shifts over time, but you will always be able to pick up the thread. You will — to give you a hypothetical example — be 77 years old and discover Tumblr and get a rush of Spirk feels after a decade of not giving TOS a thought, and contact your 83-year-old fangirl friend in the nursing home, to whom you haven’t spoken in several years. You will open the conversation with, “So, Jim and Spock love each other and that just makes me so happy.” And your friend in the nursing home will sigh and say, “Yes. They do love each other. It’s such a comfort.”
That look that Jim and Spock give each other, of absolute adoration and acceptance and love? That’s real. It’s rare, but it’s real. One of my greatest joys in life is to see my son and his husband give each other looks like that. Of course I don’t know you; I don’t know your strengths and struggles or your place on the spectrum of gender or anything about your sexuality or what you look like or what your life has taught you to believe about yourself, but I do know this: YOU DESERVE TO BE LOVED AND LOOKED AT THE WAY JIM AND SPOCK LOOK AT EACH OTHER. Please don’t accept less than that in your life.
The future of our planet does not seem very hopeful at the moment. But please remember that when Gene created Star Trek, the world was in turmoil and the future seemed very bleak. Star Trek is, was, always shall be about hope. Reach for it. When TOS first aired, we hoped to see some form of a Starfleet on the horizon in our lifetimes. That vision must be passed on to you. Do it. Make the world worthy of launching the human race out into space. CREATE STARFLEET.
You are all creative and funny and amazing. Far more amazing than you know. Be kind to yourselves. Live long and prosper, kids.
Tags are in reference to my first bullet point. Meant as a kudos to your work, but feel free to untag yourself if you don’t want to be linked to my ramblings; I won’t be offended! (Also, this extends to a thousand other artists and writers out there who deserve kudos. tag at will.)
@spockslash will not be taken down until / unless tumblr takes it down.

The way he says “HEY WHAT THE FUCK” shaped me as a person
I hope today someone is in the lucky 10,000 and sees this for the first time.
Hey, man, c'mere. Listen. Get in real close, this is important.
You're gonna make stuff again. You're gonna make stuff you're proud of. You're gonna make stuff you're excited to share. You're going to feel that overwhelming drive to create, not just the frantic I want to want to you're stuck in now. You're going to have awesome ideas, and you're going to make them into reality. You're going to create again. You're still an artist. You're still a writer. You're still home to the same passion you had before. You'll find it again. It's not gone. It's just resting. Let it rest. You're going to make stuff again. I promise.
i recently saw a tiktok where a woman asked "girlies: what are some things you do to be more whimsical? I love knowing cute little habbits"
and i've never loved a comment section more. some of my faves:
(˶˃ ᵕ ˂˶)
I talk to basically everything as if it's a person. I greet passing crows as my "cousins." I respond conversationally to my cats. I yell "same to you!" when inanimate objects make loud noises. I say good morning to plants. I thank my phone when an alarm goes off. When objects don't act the way I want them to I explain what I need them to do, or tell them they're being rude. I tell my car when we're stopping for gas.
I reassure credit card readers who are struggling that I know they are doing their best. Bless you, you funky lil machine, I'm sorry my dad is part of the reason people hate you. :(
A few months before he passed away in 2003, a 74 year old children’s television host sat down in the same studio where he had filmed 895 episodes over 33 years and recorded one last message. It wasn’t for children. It was for the adults who had grown up watching him.
Fred Rogers hosted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on American public television from 1968 to 2001. For over three decades he walked into the same set, changed into a cardigan and sneakers, looked directly into the camera, and spoke to children as if each one of them was the only person in the room. He never raised his voice, never talked down to his audience, and never rushed a single moment.
In that final recording, he looked into the camera one last time and said “I’m just so proud of all of you who have grown up with us. And I know how tough it is some days to look with hope and confidence on the months and years ahead. But I would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger. I like you just the way you are.”
He passed away from stomach cancer on February 27, 2003. He was 74.
Sometimes you're in your 50s and still need a dose of courage from Mr. Rogers when the world feels scary.
I will forever miss Fred Rogers. RIP
Jacob Tierney talks about “boring” and “fuck you” meaning “I love you” for Shane and Ilya:
“A really good friend of mine—a person who reads my scripts who's a brilliant novelist named Rainbow Rowell—she read the first episode and she said to me… “just remember that every ‘fuck you’ is ‘I love you,’ and maybe you're saying ‘fuck you’ too many times”
“And I was like oh, that's such a good call. That's a great call. Because it was just a reminder of all of the things they say to each other that are not ‘I love you’ and that are not—”
“Boring, you know, when Ilya calls Shane boring, he's saying he's in love with him. And he's not boring, [Ilya] is endlessly fascinated by Shane. And the only way he can communicate that is by making fun of him and calling him boring, because anything else would rip his soul out through his face.”
“Like that's the idea, and so even the words we use to obfuscate matter, you know?”
