never seen your blog before but in regards to your recent post i feel like its the writers responsibility to update their fics. ive lost motivation and stopped writing but even then i still updated my readers or labeled my fics as paused, because it pisses me off both as a writer and reader of fanfiction when a writer just ghosts for no reason. though i see both sides of the argument! anyway have a good one
re: this post
I think you’re mistaking a fanfic—that is a hobby—for a job that you have to perform.
because if something is a job then yes, it’s your responsibility to perform and keep people satisfied.
but fanfic writing is not a job. I’m sorry if that’s how you see it. I cannot imagine enjoying performing for free without exhausting myself out. but for other writers, it’s a hobby. a passion, yes. but still a hobby. and the thing about hobbies is that it’s first and foremost for fun, it’s a form of self care. there’s no “responsibility” when it comes to hobbies.
sure, it’s valid if a writer themself feels bad for not updating. I do. but there’s a difference between a writer wanting to write more and a reader — a stranger — demanding something from someone else’s hobby.
I don’t know how many times I have to say this but fanfic writers write for themselves. they write for their own enjoyment. for. fun.
they don’t write to please strangers. they don’t write for strangers’ approval. they don’t owe anybody anything. much less strangers on the internet.
hell, I wouldn’t be writing for almost a decade without tiring myself out first if I weren’t doing it out of love and passion. it would no longer be out of love and passion if I were chasing strangers’ approval or trying to keep them satisfied. I do this for myself, so I can escape from life into my own little world that I create for me. this is my comfort place and I do it for me. not for anybody else. me.
fanfic readers are privileged enough to read something someone else writes for their own enjoyment. for. free. they don’t get to be entitled. they don’t get to demand more.
it’s the same as when you receive a gift from someone. you don’t demand more gifts from them, you don’t tell them you dislike their gift. unless you’re an asshole, of course.
this used to be a common sense and etiquette before tiktok, algorithm and going viral made people think everything is about performance and engagement, by the way. but the thing is that that is not what fanfic is about. so whatever tiktok teaches you, you cannot apply it to ao3 or fanfiction.

I can never tell if this was intentional or not but the new season of CME has really got me thinking about how whenever something goes wrong in JJ's day to day life or she needs a hand with something, we generally see her call on Penelope first for help (burst pipes, kids birthday parties etc). But whenever something goes wrong, it's Emily who winds up filling that role instead (dog attacks, miscarriage, kidnappings, various dark and twisty spin outs etc). Then for Emily, depending on what season it is, she mostly gravitates to Morgan/Rossi (work dramas, life advice, bad dreams etc), until things go wrong, at which point JJ winds up filling that support role instead (Doyle, Scrabble, Louise Hulland, Emily doubting herself as unit chief etc). And neither of them ever really ask the other to do this. Most of the time it's other people on the team who facilitate it or it just happens organically. But it happens time and time again throughout the entire series. Then once the other is okay they just go back to being regular friends/coworkers in each other's orbit without being loud about it because 'yeah, they're fine now. They don't need me. But I'll be here next time they do.'
And we're supposed to just watch the pattern repeat itself for twenty years and be normal about that?????
i feel bad for people who don’t read fan fiction. imagine only having canon
may I offer some wenclair in these trying times?

Ares cares so so much about what Xena thinks of him and it's so funny because she barely gives a single shit. He's over here like "hey, hey Xena you can still join up with me hey Xena do you not remember when we were close hey Xena wasn't this fun??" meanwhile Xena's busy declaring her eternal love to Gabrielle for like the third time this week
Saying “this niche, properly tagged, warned, and rated piece of fiction could theoretically hurt someone” is not a good argument. This properly labeled cookie with the allergen information at the bottom that contains gluten could theoretically harm me very badly, but only if I consume it. Tags are like nutrition labels, and warnings are like allergy information. If you know you have an allergy to something, the logic is to stay away from it. It is the same with fiction. I’m not running through stores yelling at people to take all the products with gluten off the shelves just because it could hurt me. Instead I ignore it and go to the gluten free section and find cookies that are right for me. And if running through a grocery store yelling sounds ridiculous, that’s because it is. Stop doing the same with fiction.
Hey, @evilwriter37
I’m gonna need to ask you a walnut question for form’s sake. Suppose you found a blank bag of very generic-looking whatevers but there’s no clue as to what it is. You ask one of the members of staff what that’s about and they say ` “Oh, that’s the John Doe Surprise Special. Mr. Doe has this bad habit of baking at 3am or whenever he can’t sleep. Because it’s the middle of the night, he never knows whether he’s put in [potential allergen 1, potential allergen 2, potential allergen 3 and/or potential allergen 4].” What do you do next?
Well, if you have allergies, it’s very obvious to not consume the unmarked bag. A rule of thumb for me with allergies (irl) and content warnings is: if I don’t know what’s in it, I don’t eat it. It’s that simple. I don’t know if you’re trying to egg me on or something, but no one is forcing you to “eat” the unmarked bag.
They always seem to use this as some kind of “gotcha”.
Like, pal, you don’t have to eat the unlabeled food, and you don’t have to read the unlabeled fic.
You’re not in a situation where you will starve and die if you don’t eat (read) the unlabeled food (fic).
You don’t actually need fic to live at all. You would be just fine if nobody labeled their fic.
If something’s unlabeled you can accept the risk to read it or you can do what’s healthy for you and not read it.
If you really want specific cookies, you can always bake your own.
on another note, watched The Mummy (1999) the other day and I couldn’t help feel like the O’Connells and the Addams (Addams Family Values (1993) would get on really well ya know? The O’Connells are basically the pastel adventure version of the Addams, surely they would just be vibin’ over tea and crumpets in an extremely haunted mansion having a ball of a time
Morticia: “So what is it you do for a living my dear?”
Evelyn: “We dig up dead people who often have monstrous curses placed on them!”
Morticia: “fascinating”
Gomez: *leaping out from behind a pillar which is encrusted with ominous looking runes* en garde!
Rick: *grabs sword from equally ominous looking wall full of weapons one of which seems to be glowing* fantastic I was getting a bit rusty
Gomez: *nearly in tears* oh he’s screaming nonsensically, what spirit! what reslove!
*Rick and Gomez, still frantically sword fighting*
Rick: Have I mentioned how wonderful my wife is yet, I really feel like I haven’t really expanded enough on how wonderful she is
Gomez: do go on, I would be delighted to hear about how wonderful your wife is, I strongly encourge all men to extoll the virtues of their wives with rapturous praise, however I should perhaps mention my wife is in fact better
*sword fighting intensifies as both men rapturously extoll the virtues of their wives*
Jonathan and Fester and Cousin Itt watch from the bar, where Lurch and Thing are making the drinks.
Jonathan and Thing knew one another from The War; each thought the other to be dead
Their reunion is highly emotional
Rick, whilst swordfighting: My wife resurrected an ancient evil that brought about the plagues.
Gomez: What. A. Woman.
