I have a very distinct memory of a moment, as a child—younger than 10, older than 3—when I felt myself float, levitate, lift off the ground. It started in my gut, above my stomach, below my lungs, in that hollow place where ribs yawn open. It was a fist, it gripped me, expanded me, and pulled me up by that point. I could not breathe, time stopped, and I knew what thunder tasted like.

I remember knowing like a letter opener at the nape of my neck, when my feet touched the ground again, that I must never tell the grownups, or the cousins, or the little sisters.

For any number of reasons, I will never know for certain if it was real or if it was simply some trick of a mind that would later unleash hell and doubt, a trick of a child, a trick of lonesomeness in the red-dirt whipped grit of nowhere, west Texas.

Sometimes, I am very very afraid that I will never feel it again.

Cutler is 99% nice. Nice nice.

Besides being a Defender (warrior class Homerunner), Sully is raising 5 little girls all between the ages of 2 and 12. Two cousins, two sisters, and a niece. Imagine this man sitting among a pile of girls and their friends, letting them play with his hair, braid it, put cute barrettes in it, etc.

Cutler irritates his teammates by preaching what they call his “positivity mumbo jumbo,” always encouraging others to think good things and that things will be okay, get better. He does his best to look at things from other people’s perspectives, to put himself in their shoes, and tends to be very thoughtful.

But that last 1% of Sullivan Cutler is all killer, and can eclipse the rest of him entirely when necessary. Like all Defenders, Cutler’s main goal is to get other runners home from dangerous missions with the supplies to keep their families alive, to kill or maim anything and everything that might prevent that. Even at the cost of his own life.

In the meantime, though, we’ll just keep lettin’ the boy lose his shirt all the time.

Okay, y’all. This is it. I mentioned that January is the month when I will need the most help. I’m getting out of my apartment and going to live with a sister across the state until I can get the back on my feet. But first, I have to be able to pay my way out of this situation.

So, in the interest of transparency, here’s a breakdown of how badly I need your help…

I still need to raise $140 before the end of January 10th to pay a medical bill.

I need to raise another $300 for the a second medical bill by end of January 13th.

I have to pay $1850 by January 31st to pay the lease break fee.

I’m hoping to be moved out of the apartment by or on January 29th. I’m doing most of the moving by myself, but it requires driving 2 to 3 hours there and 2 to 3 hours back with just my car, so I’m also going to need to hire labor and a truck for the big stuff. The cheapest deal I’ve found comes to about $400 for truck, labor, and tips for the movers.

And probably $60 for gasoline while I’m driving.

Shit, that’s a lot of money. Terrifying amount of money.

I’ve been working my ass off at side gigs during the day, and commissions at night (I’ve taken to sleeping about 3 to 4 hours a night so I can work more), but it’s not going to pull in anywhere near enough. My sisters are trying to help too, but they’re just as broke as I am so I turn to you, my heroes.

140 = medical bill on January 10th

300 = medical bill on January 13th

1850 = lease break fee on January 31st

400 = moving costs on the January 29th (I’m aiming for the 29th so I have a couple days to clean the old apartment before my “move out” date)

60 = gas cost for moving as much as I can myself

TOTAL = $2750

When I close the cafe and the door is locked and the lights are off and the OPEN sign is off, but people still come up to the door, yank on the handle, and then stare at me as if to force me to come to the door. Sometimes bang on/shake the door if they see me.

No. Go away. I’m going home and you can’t stop me, dammit.

Or when I turn off the OPEN sign and am about to put the key in the door and they YANK IT OPEN AND WALK INSIDE like “haha, I win, now you have to serve me.” No. Oven’s off, bitches. Go to Starbucks and see if I care.
