“And Yet Our Hair Grows” (2025)

Weaved Paper and Digital

Made this piece to explore the Filipino identity and art after years of colonialism and other struggles that could possibly limit what we make, moreover why it shouldn’t.

“Filipinos have gone through extensive periods of loss, and yet our hair grows. We can straighten it, curl it, change its color, cut it or let it grow– it will still be hair. Thinking of the Filipino identity as unchanging and stagnant will keep us from exploring and, hence, from thriving. It’s a matter of what we do to, let’s say, our hair. We have to let things change for us to see what makes Filipinos Filipinos. We can’t keep reverting back to a haircut that doesn’t fit us anymore.“

There are elements here picked from Philippine Art History such as the Maranao Okir mimicking face tattoos to those of the Visayan Pintados. I also weaved paper to serve as the background which were waters from Siargao and a street in Manila. Also liked how I rendered the face here :3

Any time I try and hold Wille to any sort of standard I imagine my 16 year old self and I shut the fuck up

every time i think about young royals, i remember how everyone is just around 16-19 year old— how it’s one of the most confusing ages to be (at least for me). wille’s impulses and outbursts (fight vid in s1, pointing a gun to august, shouting at his parents) are all so Very Teen of him.

i don’t mean to say that his rage is nonsense. i like how YR portrayed that teenage angst comes from somewhere. he was neglected by his parents, his privacy invaded, became heir to the throne he didn’t want, dead brother, and everything else. he was having it ROUGH.

and fuck i’d be angry too. i remember being 16 years old and being quick tempered and a horrible decision maker. but i also remember thinking that i made sense and what i thought was right. but i learned (i think) and wille definitely did too.

can we just talk about how august is one of the most well-written antagonist characters in modern media? he’s done some unforgivable things but you still see him as human. he’s not just an evil person to make the storyline more interesting, he’s so much more complex than that. from a writer’s perspective i absolutely love his character and his storyline so much. also props to malte gårdinger for playing him so well. wow. just. wow.

someone on twitter pointed out that in the end august got everything he supposedly wanted but lost what he really loved which was sara and THAT is his punishment,,,,,young royals writers, you will always be famous

I absolutely loved August's storyline and his character in general. SO flawed and a downright awful person at times, but you grow to appreciate why he's the way he is - and even be a little sympathetic to him. I mean, dude had an ED, addiction issues, grief from his father's suicide and worked himself to the bone in school. And possibly what makes it worse is that he never had one genuine friend. I really like how they managed to humanise August WITHOUT absolving him of his sins.

It made SO much sense to me why he would fall in love with Sara. Like Felice said, she's one of the most authentic people at that school. She was like the one person August did not have to pretend in front of. Loving her was the one good thing in his life, but he was too blind to know that until the end.
