Padmé frowned deeply as she watched his stance change, a cold chill shivering its way down her back and causing goosebumps to rise along her arms. She brought her hands forward and clasped them together atop her rounded stomach, the pads of her thumbs trailing idly in circles against the fabric of her dress. He wasn't the same, and she could feel the disconnect between them as sure as she could see plainly the disconnect bleeding through the former Republic, now Empire.

It had been that way ever since Order 66 had been enacted.

Her chest tightened slightly, thumbs stopping all together as she thought of the Jedi. Her heart ached with the knowledge that in a War, there could be no winners. It ached with the knowledge that their closest allies had been their worst adversaries all along. Eyes shifting to look just beyond him, they found what had once been the Temple rather quickly. The sight of the construction made her stomach churn, and she looked quickly back to her husband.

The cold chill was much more preferable.

"You don't understand what I have done for you." The words were little more than a growl as he glowered out over Coruscant's skyline.

Padmé felt her eyebrows lift, a gentle rush of indignation blossoming through her chest as her cheeks flushed warm. She let out a huff and folded her arms across her chest, looking at him as if he'd said something outrageous.

"I understand more than you think I do, Anakin. You can't just keep me locked in here forever. There are Senate hearings, advisory meetings, deciding what to do when it comes to the Clones---" she began, but as he turned around to face her she felt her mouth snap shut and her heart thud a bit painfully in her chest. His eyes were yellow and coarse, looking at her as though he might want to do something far more than just correct her.

"You will be safe by my side, Padmé," he said at last, extending a hand to her. "Whatever I have done has been in the interest of keeping you safe. Both of you. You must believe this..."

She shivered again and took a step backward without realizing it. His words sounded pure and genuine, and she wanted desperately to believe him. Her memories all coincided with everything he'd told her after she'd woken up in a medical bay, and thus far she had been safe from the plethora of rising crime rates, if the Holonet was anything to go by.

Perhaps Anakin was right, but it still didn't justify keeping her tucked away in a tower like some fairytale princess. That was why she'd gone out there to talk to him, wasn't it?

Padmé stared at his hand for a few moments, muttering, "I just-- I really don't like hiding like this… It feels very much like running away…" before reaching out and taking his hand. It was an instant comfort as she threaded her fingers between his, her eyes finally leaving his hand and moving to meet his gaze directly. This time she didn't feel anything other than relief that he was alive, that she was as well, and that their unborn children would be safe.

"Just promise me that the ones who can will stand trial," she said softly, feeling the burden of her worries melting away. She moved closer to him, turning so that his arm encircled her as she rested her back against his chest. "And that you won't execute anyone personally. That sort of thing changes a person, Ani…"

The reaction the boy had to Padmé's studious gaze had her face warming to pink and she blinked a few times as she looked away from him, letting out a weightless chuckle that sounded more like a few amused breaths. At his mumbled words, however, Padmé lifted her head to witness him bowing a bit, the expression on her face transforming from slight surprise at his bow, to confusion about what he'd mumbled, to that of a knowing warmth as she watched him make his prompt exit.

If she'd heard him properly, he would be on his way to the service bay.

Smiling brightly, she turned and made her way from the room shortly after him, lifting her commlink and connecting to Captain Typho as she walked. She had quite a few meetings and advisors to speak with, so what needed done would have to be done in tandem. She made sure to give Anakin enough of a head start that he wouldn't have to see her or speak to her in the corridors if he didn't want to.

The rest of the day that wasn't encompassed with her duties as the Queen of Naboo was focused solely on preparing a discreet and, if everything went according to plan, completely confidential trip to Tatooine.

The following morning Padmé had risen with the sun, needing to get as much done as she could while she was still present on world to do so. No one but her Security Captain, their pilot and her Handmaids knew of the trip, much to Captain Typho's objections on the matter of she and Anakin going with merely a pilot and no security detail. Eventually she'd convinced him, and the rest of the morning went as smoothly as was possible.

By the time midday came around, Padmé was dressed as a merchant and heading to the hangar, still up to her proverbial knees in discussions and protocols and what to do if they simply could not reach her if necessary.

The only one who didn't seem to be worried for her was Sabé, and only because the woman seemed a bit more annoyed than anything. Padmé understood, but the trip was important and if the boy truly wanted to stay on Tatooine, well-- she didn't want to miss out on saying goodbye to her friend.

Padmé smiled warmly as Anakin came into view, but quickly turned her attention back to the conversation with Gregor and Dormé, who was posing as Amidala currently, as Ani blended in to the regime of Handmaidens.

Once they headed onto the boarding ramp, after a few more last minute adjustments to the schedules of the Handmaids, they continued on to board the ship. It was only minutes later that they were lifting off into the air, the ship shuddering slightly as the shields impacted the ozone around the planet before hyperspace was engaged.

The moment she was safe enough to do so Padmé hurried to the galley, wanting to get as hydrated as possible before their visit. They were going for an undetermined amount of time, as of that moment, though she supposed it really depended on how his mother was doing once they arrived. Sipping her ice water, she smiled as she heard the door slide open, knowing who it was before he'd even approached her.

She was silent as he sat beside her, though at his words she turned her head and looked at him properly, watching the way he fidgeted. "Of course we are, Ani," she said softly, lifting a hand to comb it gently through his hair. She didn't move too fast or too roughly, having noticed that he seemed to flinch if she did. "What else would we be going back to Tatooine for?"

The boy shifted uncomfortably on his feet, though at the news that they could be underway as soon as tomorrow he brightened noticeably. After a moment, though, he frowned again, brow knitting together in concentration. "How- How far away is it?" he asked. In the chaos that had ensued following their departure from Tatooine, he hadn't exactly had a chance to look at a star map.

He was vaguely aware that Naboo was in the mid-rim, so not too far from the Outer Rim where Tatooine was located, and they had come to Tatooine because it had been close -- they'd been able to make it there in fairly short time with a damaged hyperdrive. So it couldn't be too far... He might even be able to see his mother tomorrow. That thought was enough to bring a smile to the boy's lips, though there was still something dark lurking behind his eyes, especially when he looked at Padme. It wasn't a malicious darkness, more... distrustful.

In truth he didn't remember meeting Padme. He didn't remember a lot of things from the past several weeks -- but that wasn't altogether abnormal for him. He did recognize that the older girl meant him no harm, and perhaps even meant to help him, not that he knew what that would look like. Perhaps it looked like taking him back to his mother. Or perhaps...

The boy let that thought trail off and shook his head to clear it. Looking back up at Padme, he tried a smile. "Thank you," he mumbled softly, sounding almost sheepish.

Padme's eyebrows lifted at the boy's question, letting out a soft laugh as she shook her head just a bit, staring at him in a pleasantly bewildered way.

"Forty-five hundred parsecs--- But the freighter I'm requesting is our modified YV. We've added the T-14, class 1.8. The same capacity as the Nubian J-Type 327's but without the inconvenience of telling everyone where we're coming from." She said, naturally and without having to think about it. One of the many skills she had learned during her schooling and her time getting to know her Handmaids was mechanical skills. "If we leave by noon, we should be there in time for supper, I think."

She watched him as he shifted around on his feet, lost in thought, and she couldn't help the feeling that perhaps he didn't want her to be telling the truth. Perhaps he didn't want her to be offering him the one thing he wanted, or at least the one thing that she could offer to ease his pain apart from the one thing he truly wanted. If she could force the Jedi Council to train him… But there was no use dwelling on matters that were closed and not up for debate.

It would only hurt them both, in the end.

At his words of thanks, Padme smiled until it made her eyes light up.

"You're welcome," she said, still looking at him as though she might be trying to figure him out. She would have to be sure to tell Gregor to bring the subspace comms, as there was still a chance that Ani might want to return to Naboo with her once they got to Tatooine and he could see his mother again. He may just have to seek comfort in her presence and, knowing they aren't very far at all, might yet see that his home could perhaps be on two planets, rather than just the one.

The boy faltered for a moment at Padme's response. Taking a step back, he frowned at her, blue eyes studying her intensely as he tried to figure out the motivations behind her response. As she stopped in front of him, insisting that she would be accompanying him if he chose to go back to Tatooine, he scoffed quietly. "You're a queen," he muttered. "You can't just abandon your responsibilities here to take me back to that dustball." He crossed his arms over his chest self-consciously and shifted back and forth on the balls of his feet.

Looking into her eyes and seeing the genuine kindness there gave him the irrational urge to lash out again. He couldn't trust her. She would let him down. His mother was the only one who ever hadn't.

"When?" he demanded, keeping his arms tight across his chest as he eyed her warily. "When can we go?"

Padme couldn't help but let the smile widen just a bit when the boy took a step back, clearly having been utterly surprised by her reaction. She tried not to think about why he assumed she would argue the matter or worse, and wondered whom she might contact in order to help Anakin adjust and realize that he's not just free, but also safe.

"You're a queen," he muttered. "You can't just abandon your responsibilities here to take me back to that dustball." He crossed his arms over his chest self-consciously and shifted back and forth on the balls of his feet.

At that she let out a soft chuckle, looking at him as if he'd forgotten she'd been Queen the entire time they've known each other- including when they met on the very planet they were considering returning to.

"Yes, I can- and it wouldn't be abandoning anything," she insisted, the amusement still clear in her voice but careful not to sound patronizing. It pained her greatly to know he may not be returning with her to Naboo afterward, but if he wanted to stay with his mother she wouldn't refuse.

"My Handmaids aren't there only for my protection, Ani. They're also there to take my place temporarily if I ever find myself unable to fulfil the role of Queen. Like when we first met, remember? Sabe' was acting as Queen in my absence. She'll have scripts to follow and if anything unexpected happens, she'll know what to do---"

"When?" he demanded, keeping his arms tight across his chest as he eyed her warily. "When can we go?"

"Tomorrow," she said simply with a nod, not minding the interruption. She knew if they waited much longer than that the boy would only grow more irritated and restless, and her patience only ran so deep. Her genuine, warm tone didn't waver a bit and if anything only became more genuine and kind. "I'll send word to Captain Typho to acquire an unmarked merchant cruiser and have it ready for safe and discrete passage into the Outer Rim by noon tomorrow."

Padme waited in the silence that followed her instructions, staring out over the skyline of Theed and wondering what the boy might say. Her heart thudded heavily, knowing already what she might hear and wondering how she was going to make him feel better about it.

When Anakin moved to face her she let her hand fall from his shoulder and come to rest back at her side, turning toward him and giving him her full attention as their eyes met. The words came, finally, and her heart settled into her chest with acceptance-- sunken in like a ship nestled in the coral and sand beneath Lake Fa'ari.

“I can’t move forward without knowing she’s safe,” he admitted. “Yesterday, that advisor you sent me was going over all the things I can do… school, flying lessons, swimming lessons, and- I don’t know… all I could think about was-”

"Ani--" she started softly as he turned around to hide his tears, but he was far too distraught to hear her.

The feeling of loneliness and the passing expanse of space between him and his mother weighed on her heavily and she wondered how none of them had seen it coming. Master Qui-Gon had failed to convince the Council to train the boy, and his Padawan learner Obi-Wan hadn't helped matters in the slightest. Even she had been consumed by the soured dealings with the Federation, everything moving far too quickly for any of them to consider what might happen if Anakin Skywalker didn't become a Jedi after all.

As his sadness turned to anger she tilted her head, watching the back of his head curiously and taking a few steps closer as he moved himself further away.

“-all I could think about was going home,” he finished bitterly, his voice rough with emotion. “This place- it isn’t right for me,” he continued, his words growing more passionate as he paced away from her, flinging a hand toward the window as if to encompass all of Naboo.

Her fingertips ran over the Japor snippet hanging from the cord he'd given her, comforted by the etchings she found and disquieted by the bitterness in the young boy's voice. When he turned back to face her again, his eyes had gone dark and she couldn't help the gently tug in her chest that told her to take a step backward. She didn't, and stood resolutely in the face of the boy's rage.

“I don’t belong here, and she needs me. If I’m not going to be a Jedi then- then maybe I should just go back!”

"Alright," she responded simply, softly, her voice reflecting the kindness in her eyes and making the words comfortable around the edges. "If-- you really want to go back to Tatooine, then I won't stop you. Nobody will, not here..." She explained, having been taking small steps toward him the entire time and coming to a stop about two feet from the boy. "But if you're going back to Tatooine, then so am I."
