After managing to distract the two with a stop at the downtown arcade, Ignis returns back to Noctis’ apartment. Though he doesn’t quite understand their reasoning behind it, he quickly saw through their excuse of buying educational material; especially when it simply seemed more like a typical outing. Ignis has a schedule to keep and with the brown paper bag in one arm, he used his free hand to open the door.
Instantly, he’s assaulted by the acrid scent of burnt ingredients. ‘Oh Astrals, did Noct leave the stove on again?!’ Nose scrunching, Ignis quickly makes his way towards the kitchen to find his comrade preparing… is that pasta? Before words could leave him, chaos unfolds, sending smears of red across the cabinets and floor. He feels a headache drumming behind his eyes.
Not supposed to be here? And in that moment, Ignis is able to connect the dots; realization dawning upon his face. But what is the occasion? Never mind, he has more pressing matters at hand.
“Yes, so it seems.” Discerning gaze takes in the mess of a kitchen (he just cleaned it the entire apartment last night) as a sigh spills forth, mirroring Gladiolus’.
Placing the bag of groceries and his briefcase down on an unsoiled area of the room, Ignis quickly grabs for the nearest apron. Just how much food was wasted in the hours that he was gone? There’s a mental note to take inventory of the kitchen once they are done.
“Let us first begin with cleaning this up. And you can explain yourself while we do, Gladio.” Rag and heavy duty, all-purpose cleaner in hand, Ignis begins the arduous task of re-cleaning the kitchen.
Once Ignis was done assessing the damage to his apartment, Gladio was finally able to let out the breath he’d been holding. Ignis clearly wasn’t happy, but he wasn’t pissed enough to kick Gladio out, so that was a good sign. As soon as he realized just what Ignis was doing, though, he ran over and grabbed his arm.
“Whoa, whoa, no!” Gladio crossed his arms and leveled Ignis with a stern look, which was heavily dampened by the fact he was covered in his failed cooking attempts. “I’ll clean up my mess. You can start cooking... since clearly anything I try will just lead to more of this.”
After a moment, to make sure his point got across, he sighed and ran a hand through his hair. Immediately, he regretted the action as it just spread the sauce through more of his hair. Gladio looked at his hand in disgusted before holding it out for the cleaning supplies Ignis held. He’d already resigned himself to the fate of cleaning for the rest of his life.
“I was trying to surprise with you dinner.” Gladio said with a bit of a grumble. “You cook for the rest of us often enough I figured it was damn time to return the favor. Iris gave me the recipe.”
petalwind:
Well, that was easier than she expected.
“That way,” she pointed, letting her arm loop around his offered one, which was more impressively sized up close, as she’d suspected. (She had an eye for these things.) “Gladio, huh? Mine’s not half so interesting. It’s Aerith, but you can call me whatever you like. I have lots of names around here. Some aren’t very nice,” she whispered aside. “But I don’t mind it. I expect people are prone to be a little mean when they don’t understand or like something very much. What do you think?”
Gladio nodded and took off in the direction she pointed, making sure to keep his strides slow enough that he wouldn’t accidentally end up dragging her. “You serious?” Gladio asked incredulously. “You're way too sweet for someone to call you anything mean.” But not only was she kind, she was understanding too. Aerith was reminding him a whole lot of another small person he was fond of. “I think you’re right, but it’s still stupid as hell.” He paused, wondering briefly if it’d be okay to push the subject before deciding to do it regardless. If she didn’t want to answer then that would be that. “You seem pretty normal to me. What is it they’re not gettin’ about you?”
//alright sO IM HERE I just have the shittiest wifi ever on a very battered laptop. so this’ll be loads of fun.
“Both of you, STOP.”
This is what I canted to see happen after this.
The fact that he looks to the others.
Ugh.
I can't remember if I sent one or not. PRETTY sure I did but here's another anyway. 💭 .... and one for good measure. 💭 B)

This fuckin’ kid thinks he can waltz in here like he owns the place. A damn Niff prince has nothin’ here! Can’t wait until Irie’s gone and I can teach this punk a lesson in manners. If I beat his ass well enough he might scurry back home like the coward I bet he is.
(A few years later...)
Just a few more miles and we’ll be in Niff terf. It’s been too damn long, but I’ll still recognize him right? Hard not to with that scar covering his whole face. But will he know it’s me? Will he even care?
Damn, I liked it better when I just hated his guts. Way easier than this complicated shitfest.
Gimme yo thoughts 💭

Is he doing that on purpose? There’s no way he’s not. You don’t press up against something this much during a regular fight. The hell is his game? Is he just tryin’ to get a rise outta... me...
Oh.
If that’s his play, well alright then. Game on.

Can we really trust this guy? It’s almost too convenient, but damn do we need the help. He’s got the charm, he knows exactly what to say. Fuckin’ way too good of timing... it’s like he knows what we’re going to do even before we do.
But he’s got a real sweet hat. He can’t be ALL that bad.

(drunk!noct) Glado. G-Gladiooo. My big strong shield. You've always been my favorite. So Can I touch it? I really wanna touch it so bad, I bet it's biiig like you are. Heh, hung like Titan!
“You started out strong and then...” Instead of even trying to find a word for it, Gladio simply blew a raspberry. “It’s obviously not as big as a Titan, do you see how tight my jeans are?”

Unpopular opinion: Gladio was right to call Noct out on the train
His entire job is to make sure Noct does his kingly duty? He inspires Noct to be a better person? Okay so he shouldn’t have shoved Prompto but Ignis shoves Prompto multiple times in the car when he gets in his face, and no one gets angry at Ignis for that, so… yeah.
I get that Noct was grieving but Gladio’s not his mother, he’s his Shield, and sometimes he has to protect Noct from his own navel gazing.
THIS.
I do think Gladio was harsh, but he was honest it worked. I know it sucks, but Noct has a job to do at the end of the game. I never thought too much about this scene after it happened because it was necessary in my eyes.
What Gladio did was okay but he was old have handled it much better. Everyone (no matter the title) has a right to grieve and for some people who already have, depression like Noct (it’s hinted at throughout) it’s a lot harder. Considering how the first time he actually saw her face to face was the day she was to die and he had to watch it happen, that takes things out of anyone no matter the age or title (you’re still a person: a title’s just something to hide yourself behind).
So Noct had every right to be as upset as he truly was: he still cared deeply for Ignis (if you rest at camp in chapter 20 Gladio is the only person who sits away) and he does address Ignis injury before asking about Luna (let’s face it - Ignis would have deflected any further questions about it - he shared as much as he was comfortable with and Noct knew it).
Yes, he didn’t want to put the ring on (it’s a reminder of how much death has happened to protect him in essence) because he blames himself for everything. Yes, he didn’t sit with anyone on the train when emotions got too much - and he wanted to be left alone.
Gladio didn’t have to shout - speaking to him in a way that both lectures and comforts (much like how Ignis does after the Malboro fight) would have done the same thing only better.
When it happened I wasn’t so much angry that Gladio was yelling at a man who was still in shock and still grieving (I mean I was quite livid because if it was me he was yelling at a few hours after I found out about my dad’s death, I would have fricking thrown my fist at his face or I would have told him to ‘piss off’) but it was because Ignis was saying ‘that’s enough, Gladio’ because he didn’t want to make a fuss. He knew Noct was suffering just as badly, if not more, as he was and there is no way in hell letting anger get the better of you is going to make someone change in the blink of an eye (as we see, it takes Ignis’ motivating words to actually semi sort it out because he’s had enough of Gladio being a douche about it all).
Point is this: Gladio’s INTENTIONS were in the right place but the way he did it caused the opposite effect - and it would do for many people.
The only part I appreciate about that entire section on the train is when Gladio hesitates in that door way.
yeah but he’s also only 23 and no one has asked him how he’s feeling about his entire family aside from his sister being slaughtered. Noct has been mooning about for WEEKS failing to to his duty. He needed Gladio to yell at him to snap him out of it. Ignis was the necessary counterpart to guide his way after.
THIS.
I hate how everyone loses their shit about Gladio shouting at Noct. Like everything was going to shit around them and they needed Noct to pull himself together to help fix things. He has a sister that he left back in Cape Caem and he’s worried that with the growing presence of daemons she’d get killed or hurt and he can’t be there for her because he has to protect Noct. Iggy’s been blinded and there’s no way he can ever recover fully. The first thing I thought to myself after I found out he was blind was “oh my God he can probably never do his favourite hobby again (i.e. cooking)”. Thankfully, he was able to get past it, but the point is it was extremely unfair what happened to him. He was always the one looking out for everyone in the group and guiding them, and this had to happen to him.
Gladio’s a human - not a robot. He’s allowed to have times where the stress and emotion gets to him. And Noct is their king and has had time to grieve. Granted this doesn’t mean that he would suddenly get over things and he deserves to mourn, but he can’t afford to any longer. He has a duty that nobody else can do and his friends need him to pull himself together and press forward - the whole WORLD needs Noct since the nights are growing longer now and the daemons are coming.
I love the train scene because it’s very human. I think the issue is that people tend to think that people only act human when they cry (and so people get annoyed with Gladio because they never see him cry except at the campfire scene, which is silly because we never see Ignis cry apart from that scene either despite losing his uncle in Insomnia and his eyesight). I think what’s even more human is when people get angry, when people make mistakes, or when they say the wrong thing despite having good intentions. Everyone says the wrong things sometimes, especially when they’re stressed out, but that doesn’t make them an asshole.
I think had there been some sort of apology scene afterwards, that would have maybe made people happier with the scene, but these two are not good at that with each other. We see that there’s a constant struggle of power and pride between them throughout the FFXV media, which isn’t a bad thing at all. It’s good because that’s what’s unique about their friendship and that’s what pushes Noct to improve and become a good king.
TL;DR both Noct and Gladio were both wrong and right, but that isn’t the point of the scene. The train scene shows us a very human and emotional side to these people that was brought out by the stress of the journey. Gladio does’t deserve the hate he gets - it’s these qualities that are essential to being the King’s Shield.
