okay so spock (the alien in blue) essentially goes into heat. like literal heat like an animal. Anyway, spock’s in bloodlust in this episode and must go back to vulcan to have sex with his finace (or someone. but its supposed to be his fiance) or he’ll literally die. this is called pon farr and some backstory spock is half human and thought he wouldnt go through pon farr so he abandoned his HOT fiance to fuck around in space except oops pon farr happens so. he and kirk (in yellow getting his tits cut open, he’s also spocks captain and best friend) and their other friend mccoy go to vulcan so he can have sex with his fiance or get married or whatever so he doesn’t die. but then spock’s fiance (t’pring) is like no i dont want to marry spock i want to have him fight someone to death (which she can do) and spock at this point is fully in the ‘blood lust’ and is basically not in his right mind and doesnt get what’s happening. and t’pring picks kirk to be her ‘champion’ in the fight (her logic is that if spock dies in the fight she doesnt have to marry him and if kirk dies, spock will be so upset with her he won’t marry her anymore anyway). anyway kirk doesnt know that its a fight to the death and so he’s like of course i’ll do this fight if it’ll help spock and then he gets told it’s a fight to the death and he goes WHAT and right afterwards spock slices his titties open like in the gif. also eventually spock and kirk roll around in the sand and kirk fakes his death and THIS somehow knocks spock out of his blood lust and he goes back to the ship super sad bc he’s killed his ‘best friend’ only to discover kirk’s alive and we see one of his biggest smiles of the series (a big deal bc spock is vulcan and they dont show emotion). anyway this aired as the season opener in 1967. know your history and all that happy pride

if we assume that Train Murder Mysteries applies solely to train passengers or employees then a 300% increase would range from "still zero" to "30 people per year"
meanwhile, studies suggest that increased public transit can cut traffic fatalities in half, so even if we only consider the ten interstate highways with the highest fatality rates (2,260 deaths in 2020), beesmygod would be saving on net approximately 1,100 lives per year, though that could go much higher depending on the extent of the rail network thank you beesmygod, your personal convenience has made you a national hero
also, i don't want to keep harping on obsession, a movie that does not deserve the weeks of discussion it spawned, but one thing that sticks out at me is how many people just forgot the typical storytelling conceits in supernatural horror.
typically, a supernatural horror movie is predicated on most of the main cast having no supernatural beliefs, only to find out that 1) they were wrong 2) this miscalculation has put them in mortal danger. part of the tension in this setup has to do with the characters having their worldview upended like this while no one else believes them. or in the case of an ensemble cast, there's always one person who's holding on to denial about what's in front of them. sometimes characters hide this information because they don't know how other people will react to this. this is not all-encompassing, but one of the operative assumptions is "being tormented by magic/ghouls/bigfoot/bigfeet is a bad problem to have, given how that sort of thing is culturally received".
in the case of obsession, the vehicle for this is a retro novelty toy. and the way some people are talking about the movie seems to be anchored on "he KNEW magic was real and he CHOSE this!" this character is not a great guy, but it's ascribing a level of intentionality that doesn't make sense for the framing.
if i had to wager a mean-spirited guess at why this happened, it'd be this: there's a big overlap between horror fandom and the astrology/tarot/crystals/popular divination world. not uncommon for people in that space to say "i'm not saying any of this is real, but i'm not saying it's *not* real either". hence why a few of them started a discourse about rape by cursed cracker jack prize and treat it with the gravity of a real feminist concern.

In contrast some people say "there aren't any picky eaters in Asia 🙄" but this is laughably untrue. I have a cousin in India who refused until his 20s to eat anything in a sauce. as you can imagine in India this was difficult. he basically had to pick things out of curry and wipe them dry
