Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes
The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve.
Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.
If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.
Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.
This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!
It’s very clear that you all have strong feelings about Tumblr and about this change. We hear you. The passion people have for how Tumblr works is one of the things that makes this place special.
As this rolls out over the next few days and you explore it, we’ll keep reading your replies and reblogs, so please keep sharing your questions, concerns, and ideas.
Your creativity has always been the heart of Tumblr, whether you’re the original poster or adding something brilliant in the reblogs, and nothing about this change is meant to limit that.
If you’d like to talk directly beyond the comments, leave a reply and we’ll follow up with as many of you as we can. We want to work with you to make Tumblr better.
hey folks do we like this. reblog without commentary for reach

I feel that "lawn care" as promoted in the USA can be considered some kind of pseudoscience.
It doesn't have the conspiracy-theory-adjacent qualities of virtually every other "pseudoscience," which makes me hesitant to call it that, but the theory and method of it is still full of totally unsupported junk.
Where do I start?
I'm a gardener and so are the majority of people I spend time around. If you are mowing 3+ times a week and regularly spending money on fertilizer, soil tests, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides, you have chosen the most expensive, time consuming thing you could possibly do with your yard. Unless you are a farmer as your livelihood, NOTHING else you could grow is that high maintenance. Nothing.
Most turfgrasses are invasive species. I said it.
The practice of "nuking" your lawn (killing everything in it and "starting over")...If you have a so-called "weed problem" this is probably the worst thing you can do.
Listen to me very carefully: "Weed" seeds are everywhere. There is, at all times, a supply of seeds lying dormant in the soil, waiting for the right conditions to sprout. (It's called the "soil seed bank" and you can look it up.) They are capable of "waiting" for years, even decades. Furthermore, most "weed" species spread by wind, meaning you can't physically eliminate them from an outdoor area unless you...surround your entire yard with an incredibly fine mesh netting and never leave, I guess.
Heavy management will make your "weed" problem progressively worse and worse because those plants are specifically adapted to colonize barren areas that recently underwent disastrous events that killed off most life.
Basically all plants are adapted to live in the company of other organisms, and suffer when there are no other plants around. "Weeds" with deep taproots penetrate into and aerate the soil. Clover puts nitrogen in the ground that other plants need. Low ground covers keep the soil moist and stop the sun from baking your grass to a crisp.
The plant "taking over" your lawn is probably not killing your grass. Your grass is dying and it's being replaced by something more suited to the environment. This is supposed to happen.
Monocultures are notoriously susceptible to disease and mass die-offs. "Oh no a big patch of my lawn is dying!" Yeah, that happens when you plant monocultures. You set yourself up for this.
"Why is there a bare patch in my yard/why won't grass grow well here?" Because in nature, each plant has a relatively narrow range of conditions it likes to grow in, so other plants it might otherwise compete with can stick to their preferred conditions and nobody has to compete directly. Win-win. Not all parts of your yard have the exact same amount of sun, moisture, etc. Expecting the plant life to look the same is unrealistic.
Let me make this very clear: It is fully impossible to "solve" the problem of plants popping up in your yard that aren't your one favored variety of grass. You will be buying herbicides for the rest of your life, and it will get worse, not better, because willy-nilly use of herbicides is leading to plants developing herbicide resistance faster than we can come up with new herbicides.

From my limited knowledge of ecology, "but this is what natives have been saying for YEARS" basically sums up literally all work that has been done with ecology in north america
legalism is when theres laws. the more laws the more legalismer it is.
daoism is when theres paths. the more paths the more daoismer it is
confucianism is when there’s 仁, but not too much!! you gotta have 德 also which is subtly different from the 德 in daoism and in fact there are at least four different types of 德 you gotta keep your eye on, unless you’re a woman, in which case you have a completely different set and three 从 as well, unless you don’t, which you definitely could make a point for!! ask your teacher about it, unless that’s not what we’re doing right now, or consult maybe the classics or something. and the more of that you have the more confucianismer it is
a tutorial on how to obtain creature (or even vehicle or building) models, in a more complicated way than collladaexport but one which preserves the morph handles. it looks unrigged but they do have the weight paints for each bone??
what you will be doing is obtaining the .gmdl model of the creature and importing that into blender
theres also this gmdl export mod linked here, though the guide seems to just cover how to use it. if you got the gmdl through this though you can skip to the blender section
-
this is how to obtain the .gmdl file in vanilla spore
first of all, view the creature you wanna rip in the sporepedia. once it has loaded it will be put in the graphics cache
for reference this is what the .dae file from colladaexport looks like. all the morph handles reset so the face looks really weird
using sporemodder fx, use either this option in the File menu or this option in the main screen
navigate to the spore location in your user's AppData and select GraphicsCache.package. it does seem to have an intimidatingly big filesize but it will almost certainly not be this big once unpacked!
so select it. you might not have to select every format to unpack but i just do it anyway
unpack it and it might take far less time than youd expect from it being as big as it is. this is because much of the package is empty data, and its size depends on the graphic cache size option you set
anyway, looking at creature_editorModelHi~ (equivalent folders for other creation types), you will find the creature you want in the .gmdl files eventually
right click on it and copy name. chop off the filetype. this is just so you have the hash thats used for textures; its 0x268CD783 in this instance
-
then you need blender and the sporemodder blender addon. instructions on installing it are in the link also
select File in the top left, then Import, there should be options for importing gmdl
navigate to the sporemodder fx folder, then projects, then the graphics cache project and the find the gmdl file there in creature_editorModelHi~ (or whatever else)
it will import as, most likely, several objects and be untextured
-
heres how to texture it if you dont know blender
you can click on it, select material properties (spherical checkerboard-looikng icon) and press New here to create a material for the mesh
from here you can click on the yellow dot at Base Color, then in the list select Image Texture
it gives you the option to open, so you can select a texture. select it from the same sporemodder fx project
(you can do this btw to view models textured unshaded)
on the creature's other mesh, make new material, but instead of doing the same process again you can assign it the same material by clicking on the little orb next to the game and selecting the mateiral you just created (Asset_Material is from the .dae file)
it does look rather transparent... i have no good solution other than editing the image to remove the alpha channel
if youre willing to also get another program and a plugin for it, the Remove Transparency tool from this plugin for paint.net works really well, but if you dont want to do that i dont know what to recommend lol. same exact problem actually happens to the colladaexport models anyways
this is the actual graphics cache texture, its not even the same texture! so youll want to keep this in mind too. you cant just reuse the texture
anyway once youve opaqued the texture you can save it as a png or whatever. it doesnt have to be a dds
now heres a comparison to the dae
from this texture importing process you can also surmise how to import the normal map texture too (where im pretty sure the specular is in the alpha channel, so you would have to separate the alpha channel and split the images)
theres probably an easier way to do this in blender without having to edit the images? but idk lol
-
like i said, it will be unrigged and not have a skeleton. however you can find vertex groups that correspond exactly to each bone of the creature, viewed easily with weight painting
in THEORY youd be able to import the skeleton from the dae?? ive never tried it so i dont know
anyway this entire process should still work for buildings and vehicles and (im pretty sure) cells and flora as well, which you cant get through colladaexport!
early creature editor (or creature editor proto) screenshots from the artbook, which showcase the list of mouth parts, and particularly that the willosaur mouth is colored very differently between both instances
and you can see in the mouth list its just an entirely different part outright. not just the same mouth with different morph handles! ilke it was in gdc 2005, even
it might be possible that this existed for promo texture purposes. you can see this willosaur render has the stripes on its snout, but the ingame model doesnt seem to and actually matches the long tripod mouth more
(i say the term ingame here very loosely, knowing gdc 2005 spore was basically not even a game at this stage just a bunch of systems pretending to be a thing with gameplay, but you get me)
its also possible that it uses the same one part and that im reading this wrong. but theyre right next to each other, one of these mouths is offset from a nice even grid, and them being the same wont explain the blatant texture differences too
would you rather be sticky forever or itchy forever?
sticky forever
itchy forever
Really loving the eczema rep in the notes
