My cat Väinö is very sick and needs your help

You may remember my darling cat Väinö. He got in trouble from eating something that clogged his bowels earlier this year but he got help and eventually made full recovery. I owe you guys the biggest thanks for helping me pay for Väinö’s care.

I regret to inform you that he is in trouble again and this time it’s huge. I am worried sick and I have done everything I can. Väinö is now in intensive care at an animal hospital where he is able to get the best help possible.

Last Sunday he ate some strings from a blanket fringe. He vomited several times and each time there were a few pieces of string in the vomit. I took him to the vet for some first aid and x-rays. There was nothing alarming in the pictures so he got some medicine for nausea to help keep food and water in. Vomiting several times can lead to dehydration so it was crucial that he got water and food. He wasn’t interested in water of food so I had to force feed him.

By the next day he hadn’t gotten better so I took him to the vet again. New x-rays were taken and they showed a lot of gas in his intestines and his stomach was full of fluid. He got aid for his dehydration. We had to go to another vet because there were no free times for further treatment at the first one.

At the second vet his dehydration treatment was continued and he was ultrasounded and it was decided it would be best to take him to surgery to see what was wrong inside him. The gas in his bowels was let out and the surgeon removed the fluid from the stomach and also some fur. For some reason nothing was passing through his intestines. The vet was uncertain why. I took Väinö home and watched him all night and fed him a little and gave him some water because he wasn’t interested in eating or drinking himself.

By the morning he hadn’t gotten better and was still apathetic so I took him to the vet that performed the surgery for further treatment. He got hydration and some food, but I received a call that it might be best to take him to intensive care because he was still weak.

The animal hospital was an hour drive away and I was so lucky to get help from a friend since I don’t have a car or license. I took Väinö to the hospital where he is treated and more tests were run. I got a call from the vet and Väinö has very high inflammation values, meaning there is some kind of infection. He is now being treated and I will hear from him again the next morning.

I keep saying there is no price too high that helps me save Väinö. But the reality is that the cost of this all is going to be huge. I had some savings but they’re pretty much gone now. Staying at the animal hospital is going to be very pricey. I have already spent 1 500 € and it keeps going up. I can make a payment plan and probably borrow some money but I am in a dire need of help. I hate to do this again. I hate to do it because you already helped me and Väinö so much but here we are again.

Väinö is a healthy, strong cat with the most wonderful personality there is. Everyone who has met him has been completely enamored. He has made friends with so many, including my family’s dog who’s afraid of cats. My other two cats Saku and Speedy are Väinö’s best friends and there is no lovelier sight than seeing the three hang out together. My cats are the most important thing to me in the world and I can’t bear to watch them suffer. I want to give them all the help I can but right now I can’t do anything but wait and hope for the best.

That thing about how cats think humans are big kittens is a myth, y’know.

It’s basically born of false assumptions; folks were trying to explain how a naturally solitary animal could form such complex social bonds with humans, and the explanation they settled on is “it’s a displaced parent/child bond”.

The trouble is, cats aren’t naturally solitary. We just assumed they were based on observations of European wildcats - but housecats aren’t descended from European wildcats. They’re descended from African wildcats, which are known to hunt in bonded pairs and family groupings, and that social tendency is even stronger in their domesticated relatives. The natural social unit of the housecat is a colony: a loose affiliation of cats centred around a shared territory held by alliance of dominant females, who raise all of the colony’s kittens communally.

It’s often remarked that dogs understand that humans are different, while cats just think humans are big, clumsy cats, and that’s totally true - but they regard us as adult colonymates, not as kittens, and all of their social behaviour toward us makes a lot more sense through that lens.

The like to cuddle because communal grooming is how cats bond with colonymates - it establishes a shared scent-identity for the colony and helps clean spots that they can’t easily reach on their own.

They bring us dead animals because cats transport surplus kills back to the colony’s shared territory for consumption by pregnant, nursing, or sick colonymates who can’t easily hunt on their own. Indeed, that’s why they kill so much more than they individually need - it’s not for fun, but to generate enough surplus kills to sustain the colony’s non-hunting members.

They’re okay with us messing with their kittens because communal parenting is the norm in a colony setting, and us being colonymates in their minds automatically makes us co-parents.

It’s even why many cats are so much more tolerant toward very small children, as long as those children are related to one of their regular humans: they can tell the difference between human adults and human “kittens”, and your kittens are their kittens.

Basically, you’re going to have a much easier time getting a handle on why your cat does why your cat does if you remember that the natural mode of social organisation for cats is not as isolated solitary hunters, but as a big communal catpile - and for that purpose, you count as a cat.

The Norwegian plan to gift Finland a mountain

Finland’s so fricking flat that our dear neighbour wants to donate us some higher altitudes

This would be a good thing. Summer 2014 we visited Halti, but it wasn't that impressive as we had to jump few rocks over to Norway's side to get to the highest point of the mountain. It wasn't even marked anyway whereas Finland's peak had a visitors' book(and lots of rubbish, there were even egg shells there...) .

I drew a thing for the text adventure we’re going to make at school. Making a game, how cool is that, even if ours is gonna have a very generic story because none of us are any kind of story-writers.
