2024 has been a bit of a rollercoaster for me! I started my final year of uni, had a proper birthday celebration with my friends for the first time in 21 years of life, got rejected from a bunch of PhDs, almost failed a final exam, listened to an extraordinary amount of music, saw my favourite band live again, and joined tumblr!!
my top artist: twenty one pilots! I finally took the time to check them out properly and they ended up being my number 1 artist for the year on Spotify, I adore Clancy and listened to it so much
my top song: Bleeders by Black Veil Brides because yes…though A Work of Art by Ice Nine Kills comes close second because it has such a delicious breakdown
my top book: American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, I’ve re-read it a bunch and it has really sparked my joy for analysing books that I thought English Lit classes had killed
my top show: Dead Boy Detectives gets the shout-out here for literally consuming my every waking thought and leading to me reading about 500 fics on ao3 in the space of three months 😭 though the fixation has died down now and been replaced by The Magnus Archives and Arcane so they come in close second and third
my top moment: oh god how do I pick one?? having lunch and a museum trip with my friends for my birthday, seeing Black Veil Brides play old songs, seeing Creeper live (incredible!), being in the confetti and nearly having a heart attack jumping to Boys and Girls at Conan Gray, acing my solo presentation even though I was still finishing it the morning of…there have been an awful lot of bad moments of 2024 but there have been some very good ones too :))
my biggest achievement: getting out of my comfort zone when it comes to public speaking and joining the peer mentoring scheme for my faculty and sharing my poems at my uni’s creative writing society!
lastly a special shout-out to my mutuals @kitkatkitchen @shreysheep and @sunnylemonss @yourlocalwhovian and more people I’m probably forgetting 😭 I’ve loved getting to know y’all so much and can’t wait to keep up with y’all in 2025!!
if tmi ever gets adapted in a visual media again, there's need to be shot of Magnus alone in his apartment after the part in city of bones imo. like it represents him sooo well at this point of the story in such a gutting way.
just. that moment after the party ends. there's no more music and the lights come on and the magic of it all dies. you look around at wreckage around you and then you leave with your friends and take all the fun and laughter with you to go home because the moment is over and life continues on.
except for Magnus, because this is his life. that silent hollow room is all he has.
so much of Magnus is frivolous and fun; he throws parties and goes on adventures and he's over the top in all the best ways. and it's all a bit of a front for the fact there's nothing meaningful behind it. that he's throwing parties for his cat because there's no one else to throw them for. that all his friends are immortal, and flicker in and out of his life between all the other things they have going on that give their lives meaning his doesn't have.
Magnus, for all the 400 years he's lived, doesn't really have anyone even to mourn. there were people very important to him, absolutely, but they came with a catch. Etta is one of the exes he looks back upon the most fondly, and she left him because she wanted a family, something meaningful that was incompatible with him. Most warlocks only live because someone loved them enough to protect them from the world, but Magnus lived because he saved himself. there's never been anyone else but him from the very beginning.
except for now theres these random teens who barrel into his life and refuse to leave. and he makes flippant comments and puts up his walls because he knows in the end it'll just be him alone in aftermath, because that's how it always ends. except. when he calls Asmodeus in Edom, when he know theres no way to save himself and when he comes to terms with that... they stand between them. they save his life. Simon makes a massive sacrifice for him, and no one has ever really done that before.
just. that moment after that first party. Magnus standing in the carved down emptiness left behind. and that's the beginning, because they stick around this time. they're annoying and reckless and a little doomed by the universe and this time they're his.

Also, I’m considering starting a ‘drink count’ for each short story. I presume ‘What Really Happened in Peru’ will be the winner (due to Magnus’s iconic drunken escapade later in the tale) but I’m curious nonetheless. Three pages in and he’s already on 17.

Umbrella Academy Season 4 (very very mild spoilers):
I forgot to mention that the most accurate sibling moment of the show is at Lila’s house where Five and Diego are fighting and Klaus steals Five’s seat almost as soon as he stands up.
Like my boy was invested in the drama but he took the time to steal it.
Okay, I’m going to say that this was my least favourite season. However, that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it thoroughly haha
The ‘disappointing’ parts:
- Five and Lila - so weird and not needed! I feel Lila and Diego’s marital problems could have been outlined and accepted in a different way than the cheating way
- Klaus’ weird side plot - I LOVE klaus and I enjoyed his little shenanigans! However I don’t really see the point in his side plot? Or how it relates to the plot of the Cleanse? Klaus’ whole arc has been about not being taken seriously because of his addiction but that arc was not solved this season because all they did was make him the most useless part in ending the apocalypse? He at least could have kept the dog!
- Plotholes - Why did Klaus’ tattoos dissapear and then not reappear with the Marigold like Luther’s body? What’s the full story behind Ray and his absence (all that was mentioned was a separation with no real meat to it or emotion)? Etc etc
- Rushed - why did they choose to do six episodes? I guess we’ll never know. Some things could have been solved with more time? Maybe I could have grown to like Lila and Five if they had been given more than one episode? (I know it was seven years but it feels rushed from an audience perspective)
The parts that made it The Umbrella Academy:
- amazing acting from all parts. I’m so biased when it comes highlight Robert Sheehan but I always will. His ‘daddy issues’ monologue was CORRECT and so well acted <3 And, of course, Justin H Min knocking it out of the park! I really grew to love Luther this season! Tom Hopper does an excellent blend of comedy which makes up for our usual comic relief (Klaus’) more serious plot line. Also Claire’s actress (I don’t know her name, will find out) was great! I really enjoyed when her character was on screen!
- The overall ending - I personally liked the idea that the siblings accept that they were the issue all along. Some of the final moments hit very well. I loved Abigail’s discussion with Hargreeves. KLAUS CRYING CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD SO THANKS FOR THAT. And the cameos at the end were so fun to spot!
- CIA fight scene - such a highlight for me in classic umbrella academy style ! Diego and Luther really stood out to me where they didn’t usually, this season.
- Jean and Gene - classic umbrella academy villains with great wackiness to them.
- COMIC ACCURACY! Always a highlight for me. I’ve been waiting for Klaus to float for a very long time and some great comic cameos!
Overall, not my fave season but the finale made up for some parts that felt rushed or uncertain. I feel if they’d have kept to the ten episode format then a lot of these issues wouldn’t have occurred. For those wondering, season 2 is my favourite season overall <3
