it’s actually quite easy to take over a small local government group if you really want to, bc if you volunteer consistently people will just put you in charge of whatever. I’m now one of like three people at a nature preserve making official decisions about trails, putting in a prairie, and designing a series of illustrations for a storybook trail etc., and it’s just because last summer I started coming over once a week to help the naturalist out for a couple hours. i love it when writers play sympathy chicken with me by making characters who suck for understandable reasons but are, like, so uncharismatic and regressive and genuinely difficult to root for about it. i love it when being a victim doesn't make someone a better person or motivate any kind of self reflection or improvement. i love it when people who were hurt respond in mundane, unromantically terrible ways that only make them more pathetic and repellent to others. i'm not even being ironic these are some of my favourite kinds of characters. can't say i'm as fond of what happens when they're introduced to a fandom though.

Actually, no, I don't think that friendships dropping like flies in your late 20s and early 30s because no one has time for that between overwork and family obligations and marriage and kids and partners and the ritual of the time slayer is normal and ok. No I don't think deep conversations and spontaneous adventures being replaced with a tired coffee every six months is a normal part of growing up. I don't think that emotional intimacy and soul bonds disintegrating in the face of practical inconvenience is a fact of life. I think that means something is deeply deeply wrong with our society and I will never forgive it for the friends I've lost
