First, I wanted to say thank you @twistedstorybook01 for giving me a warning about their account being hacked. Their old account actually reached out to me right after they messaged me so I knew right away what was going on.
As per their request, please block and report their old account! Accounts that were taken over are being used to spread the scam, so it is in everyone's best interests to have them taken down as quickly as possible!
I also wanted to add a link to this post here so everyone could see the full scam.
I would also advise everyone to read Tumblr's own page on scamming. This particular scam is something that they are aware of and is actually at the top of their page. Here is the quote:
"Someone Accidentally Reported Me!
If someone reaches out to you apologizing for accidentally reporting you and giving you steps to fix that, it is a common scam that we are aware of. All reports are reviewed by a human, so if someone actually accidentally reported you, the report would likely be rejected. If someone like that reaches out to you, or you think someone is pretending to be Tumblr Staff, please report it to us immediately and block them. Outside of official Tumblr accounts and our support email, Staff will never message you, reply to your messages, or notify you about changes to your account. Also, Tumblr will never ask for money besides for what’s sold in TumblrMart."
Some other tips that I can think of:
Tumblr support (or really any official support) is never going to direct you off-site. If support is asking you to go to another website or platform (in this case Discord), it's a scam.
Always watch out for the word "kindly". Idk what it is about that word but it's a scammer's favorite. I'm not saying anyone who uses that word is a scammer, but scammers love to use it.
Tumblr support is never going to need your password! Never give it out and never change it per their request! Same thing with one time passwords. They'll never ask for that information, so if someone does you are talking to a scammer!
If you're ever in doubt, contact the platform directly! Tumblr (or any platform) can confirm or deny if anything alleged is true and work with you from there.
Scams like this work for two reasons: fear and trust. They contact you telling you that your account is at risk of being deleted so you panic and reach out to them. You might be more willing to overlook red flags if you're worried about your account being wiped off the platform. They're also using accounts that you may recognize and trust. Always be skeptical! You never really know who you're chatting with! It's easy to get got so please be cautious!
To everyone who got their accounts taken over, I am terribly sorry this happened to you. I'm not sure if there is a masterlist of people who's accounts have been compromised, but feel free to respond to this to let people know who you are and what your former accounts were. It might help people to find you and for the community to identify which ones need to be reported.
Not only should it be law that anything AI generated on the internet should be labelled as such but every website, app, and digital service should have a button I can click that removes any AI from my interactions with that site/service. I don't want your AI assistant I don't want your AI-generated ad copy I don't want this insidious little thing that has crept into so much of the internet that I can be using it without even realising or knowing. If you couldn't be bothered to have a human make it I can't be bothered to look at it sorry bye
“No one wants to look at art of OCs” I don’t think that’s true at all…I follow people specifically to see their OCs literally all the time. Bring back being curious about people’s OCs, asking questions about them and hyping them up like we did when we were teens
