incorporates new patterns inspired by sailor’s knots into her braids

perches on the crow’s nest and will sit there for hours on end babbling to herself and watching the sun set over the horizon bc it reminds her of being on the rooftops in ketterdam

curses like a sailor because specht is a bad influence and it helps her gain confidence being the leader of a crew for the first time

also wears jewelry that combines traditional suli designs with pirate symbolism like anchors and compasses made and sent to her by jesper

befriends so many marine animals!!! and loves to read about them in her spare time. is inspired by the idea of wylan and jesper naming every stray cat after her, so she starts naming different species after her friends and family. like, all sea otters are jesper because they love to play, and all whales are wylan because of their songs

every time she docks somewhere and sees a crow she likes to think it’s matthias paying her a visit and will confide in him about the mental battles she faces regarding faith and happiness

is really close with her crew and relearns how to be loud and carefree with them through things like singing sea shanties, playing card games, having meals together since now it’s no longer her job to make herself invisible

whenever she docks somewhere and has a really good meal (especially sweets), she asks for the recipe to send to nina

has made a running bit out of buying the most ridiculous looking hats at the markets for kaz wherever she travels because she thinks the look on his face will be priceless when she gifts them to him (also knowing full well that jesper will be the one who gets some use out of them)

actually buys kaz decks of cards and picks up newspapers with murder mysteries to solve together (is totally planning an apple cake and murder mystery date night when she gets back)

The first one reminded me that there is a style of braid that’s named after the sailor’s knot. Other than that I can imagine her doing braids styled after the half clove hitch. Or taking small monkeys fist knots (the kind made of thinner cord instead of proper rope) and fixing a couple to the end of her braid

YES i love this!! i was thinking about how hair carries memories, so inej braiding hers differently on the wraith versus in ketterdam would be an interesting way for her to separate those identities.

the first tumblr post i read about "you're looking for someone it's ok to be cruel to" honestly rewired my brain.

tumblr is full of dimwitted reactionaries but ive also read a lot of things that have fundamentally changed how i think about justice, mental health, etc.

despite the best efforts of the site's staff and its manbaby ceo, there continues to be a contingent of people here who are committed to understanding things better, to doing better, and to changing the world for the better.

every so often i remember how awesome the modern interconnected multicultural world is. i grew up getting to hear fairy tales from all over the world. africa, asia, europe, america. everywhere in between. i can have bagels for breakfast, curry for lunch, and ramen for dinner without even leaving the city limits. music and art and philosophy and technology that originated thousands of miles and years apart from eachother have come together and interwoven into something greater than the sum of its parts. its hard not fall into despair when thinking about the horrors but god. god the wonders.

i really really loved how the supergirl 2026 movie subverted the 'if you kill them ur no better then them' trope, i loved that the conflict was not that he doesnt deserve to die but rather that ruthye deserves to not have to kill him, that she is just a child and should not have to carry that burden along with everything she had already been through. i really loved how kara killing him recontextulizes her actions leading up to that moment, how it becomes clear that it was never her intention to let him live, but to keep ruthye safely away from the fight.

ive always disliked the anti revenge narrative because sometime people do just do things that are unforgivable and wont be stopped by the current system, but here kara never said ruthye should forgive him, but rather that ruthye deserved to live on and it is made far more impactfull by the fact that it is in the same fight where kara accepts the suit and truly becomes supergirl. superman is the shield, supergirl is the sword, supergirl fights so girls like ruthye dont have to.

When I lived in London there was a murder of crows that lived near me. I fed them often, they brought me presents (shiny rubbish and cigarette butts they found on the floor to thank me.)

When I moved, I’m certain they understood I was leaving because I had all my stuff and gave them lots of food and compliments.

But, they chased down my friend who lived in the next burrough over. They had recognised that friend with me several times and followed them to their house when they couldn’t find me.

They adopted my friend and it was now my friend’s job to bring them snacks and receive the presents.

This was maybe 6-7 years ago.

I visited London last year. Went to see my friend. The crows all not only recognised me, they tracked me down. We got into my friend’s flat and not twenty minutes later there was chaos on the balcony.

We open the curtains, the entire fucking murder is there shouting because they wanted to see me.

Crows are the very best birds.

Is still find it funny that while (some) complaints about PJO and it's writing are valid, some just miss the point of the book itself.

Does the fact Demigods have ADHD and Dyslexia make sense because they're "wired for battle and ancient greek"? No.

But the meta of the books is that RR only wrote them because of his son with ADHD and Dyslexia. There would be no book without it- and say what you want about his bad descriptions of Dyslexia but honestly as someone with ADHD Percy’s dialogue reads like someone with ADHD.

This also goes into things like queer and POC rep in earlier books: is it good? No. Should it be the standard now adays? no.

But this was a book series published in the early 2000s. Having a series overtly state a character was mentally ill was out of right field at the time. Nico coming out as gay was unheard of. Even if the coming out scene WAS bad, I NEED people (both who glaze the whole thing or who despise it) to realize it's not written well, but it was still written despite the time it was. Which again: is better then most series at the time.

This also goes for POC rep: are there several issues with it? Yes. But unlike most rep done stereotypically its not purposely cruel. It's not done this way because RR thinks less of POC, its done this way because hes a straight middle aged white man. To actually name a first nation's person in your book (even if he choose the most "stereotypical" one) was a big deal at the time. To have several characters who were not white and important was a big deal at the time.

I'm not meaning to glaze RR. Anyone can have their opinions and choose what they want to read.

But guys, PLEASE these books were written in the 2000s/2010s. Gay marriage was only legalized in the states in 2011. Percy Jackson (at least in pop culture) is thought of to sit just below Harry Potter- which is owned by a bigot hell bent on destroying people's lives.

RR isn't the supervillian some of you make him out to be (unless I've massive missed something), he again is just a middle aged white man who is trying to write rep into his books. Which is better then 99% of books on the market today much less on the market in the early 2000s.

Time period does matter, and trying to "cancel" an author whos legit just trying to write rep for communities he's very obviously not in is not helping anyone. Especially not when a writer of another childhood series is literally helping strip people of their rights.

Thank you for saying this oh my god. I want to add, I literally did not know LGBTQ+ was a thing before I read RR books. I grew up reading Harry Potter and Enid Blyton where everyone was cishet white. I had genuinely never seen POCs in books before (highly satisfying, as a POC myself). I never considered that ADHD was actually a common problem that affected many people's lives. RR opened my eyes to MANY issues and actually made me a more open-minded person.

I saw women breaking stereotypes, which meant a HELL OF A LOT to me as a tween girl, already sick of misogyny, living in a relatively backward society (for reference, my great grandmother was married at 13, my grandmother never went to secondary school, and my mother fought her father to pursue higher studies). I remember reading Daughter of the Deep and Rick just normalised periods (my first time seeing it even mentioned in a book) and I was shocked. I was like this is actually getting talked about? People acknowledge that this is a problem that legit happens instead of avoiding it like the plague?

RR really did open my eyes by just trying to write representation and being a feminist and even if stuff isn't accurate it is still the best attempt I have ever seen. When I see RR hate I feel like it's literally just ragebait by people who NEED to bitch about something or the other.
