to lgbtq+ indigenous youth:
just a reminder that you are under no obligation to label yourself according to the western-centric + white-centric labels of gender and sexuality.
lgbtq+ identities existed long before colonization touched our land. You do not have to exchange one type of conformity for another to fit in with other lgbtq+ folks.
If labels like nonbinary, genderfluid, etc feel good to you, go for it!
If two-spirit feels right, thatâs awesome! If not, donât sweat it.
If you have an identity specific to your indigenous heritage, you are under no obligation to translate your complex, nuanced identity into terms that non-natives understand.
You are under no explanation to explain your identity to non-natives.
(ok for non natives to reblog!)

This week everyone is talking about the sovereignty of nations. Everyone is standing with Ukraine and horrified by Putin, because Ukraine is a sovereign independent nation and the Russian army invaded for no reason.
There have been a lot of jokes that Putinâs justifications of the invasion are the same as if Mexico invaded the United States because it used to control Texas. These jokes highlight how ridiculous Putinâs claims are. They point out that you cannot invade another country because the land used to be part of your country.
These arguments have a point, and obviously Putinâs invasion violates all kinds of international law, but we seem to be missing that sovereignty isnât the magic bullet to protect a society in the way the jokes seem to assume.
Tribal sovereignty is currently under attack in this country with multiple Supreme Court cases considering arguments that would legally weaken the sovereignty and self-determination of Native Americans. This week the court agreed to hear a challenge to the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) in Brackeen v. Haaland. These attacks arenât military but they seek to weaken sovereignty.
The conservative challenge to ICWA uses the Equal Protection Clause to argue that any different treatment of Native Americans by the government is unconstitutional. Native Americans define themselves as a political identity, not a racial one, so the Equal Protection Clause shouldnât apply.
However, if this challenge is successful, which it has been so far, it would likely have far-reaching implications beyond the Indian Child Welfare Act. Tribes have sovereignty as political entities, not as racial ones, so if the Equal Protection Clause supports striking down ICWA, tribal sovereignty as a whole is in danger.
Rebecca Nagle, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, explained to me, âAnything that feeds this argument that Native identity is based on racial biology, rather than a political status as citizens of tribes, feeds this far-right attack on our tribes.â
Tribes are separate sovereign nations, not a racial identity.

I *think* I get it, now...
When I was in high school, we basically learned one or two lines about Americaâs early experiments with government, before the 1789 Constitutional Convention. And it could be boiled down to:
We tried to emulate the Iroquois League of Five Nations (not their name for themselves. Their own name for themselves in Mohawk, is Haudenosaunee). But that ended up in near civil war between the states. So we had to start over with our Constitution.
But there was no explanation or discussion about why the Articles of the Confederacy didnât work, as the early Americans tried to implement them. Now that Iâm reading KayanerenkĂł:wa: The Great Law of Peace, by Kayanesenh Paul Williams, Iâm starting to get an inkling as to that âwhyâ.
The Great Law of Peace was a codification and extrapolation of already accepted and understood family relationships. But the family structures in the Haudenosaunee nations that make up the Haudenosaunee Confederacy are very different from those of the European diplomats who came to meet with them in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Quote:
The relationships within families were not the same as they were in European society. Children and wives were not property in any sense, and whereas in a European family of the eighteenth century the primary obligations were the childâs obedience and the parentâs providing, in a Haudenosaunee family that duty to obey was singularly lacking. Just as traditional Haudenosaunee government was not executive, and had no coercive power over the people, parents would not exercise authority over their children.
Kindle Edition.(location 5114 12241)
And also:
The Peacemaker understood that, for peace to exist, people must not only be rational but must also accept that other people are capable of rationality, for rational minds will seek, create, and maintain peace. The story of the making of the Great Law is thus also about ways of restoring people to rationality. It charts a map for a healthy society, not just for healthy individuals.
(Ibid. Location 175)
So: The European (mostly English) settlers on North America, who
thought
they were emulating the Haudenosaunee Confederacy in their new form of government really were very much
not.
Because A) their family structures were hierarchical and authoritarian, and the presumption of rational thought was restricted to a small fraction of the population (I.E. only wealthy, white, land-owning, adult men were thought to be capable of rational thought, instead of all of all humans, by the very nature of being human).
So â yeah. No wonder that fell apart. We tried to build our own longhouse without the first idea of how the architecture was put together.
Oh, and in case anyone tries to tell you that there is no way that a truly non-authoritarian, non hierarchical system of government can last more than a generation or two, you can just point out that the Haudenosaunee Confederacy is still fully functioning after about 400 years. (Ibid location 255)

People love natives in such a superficial way. People wanna stand with natives when weâre talking about the trees, and the land. People wanna stand with natives when we talk about philosophies of love and togetherness. But as soon as itâs time to talk about political side of being native. About dismantling a system built on the genocide of our people. About how we need a new system that isnât built upon capital gain and benefitting white bodies. About putting up a fight. About how the colonial state we reside in is a disgusting imperial plague on this land. Suddenly yâall donât wanna talk native.
"They spent hundreds of years trying to assimilate my ancestors, trying to create indians like me, who could blend in, but now they donât want me either. They canât make up their minds.
They want buckskin and face paint, drumming, songs in languages they canât understand recorded for them but with English subtitles, of course. They want educated, well spoken, but not too smart. Christian, well behaved, never question. They want to learn the history of the people, but not the ones that are here now, waving signs in their faces, asking them for clean drinking water, asking them why their women are going missing, asking them why their land is being ruined.
They want fantastical stories of Indians that used to roam this land. They want my culture behind glass in a museum.
But they donât want me." -Shelby Lisk
