Finally bothered to recover this tumblr. We’ll see how long that lasts.

learning that most trees do not derive from a single lineage but actually only look and function superficially similarly due to convergent evolution is one of the most fucked up things i’ve ever learned and i will never be the same person as i was before i learned that
Oak trees are quite a bit more closely related to roses than they are to pine trees.
So are apple and cherry and pear trees! But palm trees are basically grass
Like many animal lines have gotten Huge and Lumpy in the ocean, so have plants gotten Tall and Woody in the sunlight.
Tumblr is getting a facelift
Some time ago we took a long, hard look at how we stacked up to the recommendations outlined in the Web Accessibility Initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium. This is the initiative that sets standards for accessibility for people who may need assistance using the internet. It outlines steps to take and tools to use to create as seamless of an experience online as possible, whether you have auditory, visual, or neurological disabilities, are using a limited device, are on a slow connection with limited bandwidth, or…well, a whole bunch of other reasons.
The result of that long, hard look? Not great. We needed to make sure Tumblr was accessible to anyone who wants to use it.
Over the past few weeks we’ve been making changes to do just that. Our inaccessible menus are more accessible, we fixed our poorly described elements, and increased overall readability. You can read more about all that in our most recent @javascript post about the mobile web.
Part of making Tumblr more accessible involved upping the color contrast in our UI, most notably on the dashboard and everywhere else that familiar blue touches. The light grays and muted blues had a contrast ratio of 2.02:1. What does that mean? Bad. It was bad, and we needed to do better by people with visual impairments.
Enter your new dashboard:
It looks…cleaner, doesn’t it? Like someone dusted off the poorly accessible bits. The blue is darker, the grays are lighter, all the buttons and icons are brighter with our new brand colors, and it has a contrast ratio of 7.87:1 What does that mean? Good! Very good.
The switch to your brand new, higher contrast, less dusty dashboard has been slowly rolling out this week. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ll get it sometime in the next few days.
A note: We know that this color change on the dashboard negatively impacts the beautiful bluespace art so many of you have created over the past few years. Seeing these older posts lose the utilization of the dashboard—something that made them so special and unique to just Tumblr—is certainly not a great feeling. There’s no way around that. We hope, however, that this change only means newer, more bluespace art will be created, and that this time around it will be easier for everyone to experience.
Goodbye, #36465D. You’ve treated many of us well, but #001935 will treat every single one of us even better.
It’s going to make my fucking eyes hurt more that’s for sure. Do you have anyone with an art degree on your team ??
hey @staff did u kno higher contrast rates fuck up people with migraine, just a question about ~~~~~~~~~~~~~accessibility
did no one consider just adding a toggle in the settings? so that people who need the higher contrast can choose? ffs
I’ve had this all all of 20 minutes and my eyes hurt and I’m getting a headache. Thanks for making my Tumblr experience now a physical pain.
I’ve known that rapid flashing could trigger migraines for me. But it wasn’t until today that I learned that super high contrast can start my forehead feeling tight and my eyes hurting/vision getting fucked up too. Thanks, Tumblr, I’ve learned a new trigger!
On a serious note, though: genuine thanks to everyone who has posted about actually adaptive tech, like the Dark Reader browser extension.
They also changed the reblog button to be much lighter, which, ya know, isn’t high contrast and is in fact harder to see.
Ah. Well, this explains why my head suddenly got so much worse after 4 pages of scrolling.
that video of somebody putting makeup on an egg and somehow making that egg looks exactly like 89% of instagram just explains makeup culture more thoroughly than anyone on here ever could
in case you guys don’t know what i’m talking about
“My mom painted this and said no one would like it. It’s her 2nd painting.”
“I painted somebody’s mom”
“Took a while and not perfect, but i painted the guy who painted the other guy’s mom”
“I painted the girl who painted the guy who painted the other guy’s mom who painted an egret”
This is so pure

bob corlson im know it is you & if youm have anythinge to say to me youm had better say it to my beautéful face
bob corlson youm willn’t get away with this
donot test me bob corlson
Cat, I apologize, I feel there has been a misunderstanding here. In my capacity as President of the American Butter Association, I took a sacred oath to promote and encourage consumption of as much butter as possible. However, as a private citizen and as a man, there is a limit to what I can hand wave.
672 grams of butter per day for an average sized cat such as yourself is simply not healthy, and I cannot condone it. I wish this disagreement did not involve lawyers, and I am open to a meeting at a time and place of your choosing to resolve this.
sincerely,
Bob Carlson
American Butter Association
im callinge my attourney at this very moment to notify them of this so youm butter back down bob corlson
If you guys didn’t see some white girl posted a montage of her colonizer experience in Hawai'i and has been getting dragged for days now lmao I’m not gonna link it cause it’s just her and some other haole girls she met her literally dancing on graves and sacred places and showing off her dirty hair.
But I did a little thread on why these romanticized ads of our home harms us (not super in depth but touches on some important points). And I was a lot nicer about it cause I actually do care if you come to visit and I’d actually prefer that everyone leave us alone forever but colonizers gonna colonize and settlers gonna settle 🤷🏽♀️
[Images: a tweet from user @WatkinsLondon that says: “This year I packed up my life into a tiny suitcase and moved to a little rock in the middle of the ocean. I fell in love with Hawaii, I fell in love with these people. But above all, I fell in love with being alive”.
This tweet is followed by a tweet thread from user @angelcurlsss that says:
“That stupid video of that haole girl who moved here for 4 months is just showing how fucking ignorant the general population is about Hawai'i and what has happened/is happening to Native Hawaiians.
1. HAWAI'I IS AN ILLEGALLY OCCUPIED SOVEREIGN NATION.
2. Native Hawaiians (Kānaka Maoli) used to make up 100% of the population. It’s estimated we make up about 20% of the state’s population now.
3. Hawai'i was once the most literate nation in the WORLD, about 91-95% of the kingdom by 1834.
4. ‘Olelo Hawai'i (native Hawaiian language) was illegal to teach in schools until 1978, but didn’t get taught again in schools until 1987. People don’t understand how recently they had their colonial policies forced on us. 1978… my mom was born in 1973. She could’ve been beat just for speaking her native tongue on her native land.
5. Despite making up less than a quarter of the state’s population, native Hawaiians make up about 60% of the prison population (mostly nonviolent crimes).
6. Native Hawaiians also make up most of the homeless population. Hawai'i has the largest population of homeless people per capita in the U.S.
7. As of 2018, the average price for a single family home in Hawai'i is $795K. There are no regulations for foreigners owning land.
Including (but not limited to) these facts and statistics, native Hawaiians are one of the most disenfranchised communities in Hawai'i. Our own ‘āina. When people treat our home as a playground for their own selfish needs, they change everything here except the price of living. Native Hawaiians and locals are leaving Hawai'i by the dozens. They recently estimated it to be 11 locals leaving PER DAY.
I don’t care if you want to come visit. Our home is beautiful and I don’t blame people for wanting to see it. But I do care when you poison our land, romanticize our lifestyle, fetishize our people, and cheapen our culture. Unless you’re coming to pour money into our communities and work for our betterment and sovereignty (I know you’re not) you bring nothing of value to Hawaiians. Please come and enjoy, but don’t forget when it’s time to leave.”

Ominous positivity
You will be okay. You have no choice.
Everything will turn out fine. You cannot stop it.
You will succeed. It is inevitable.
Ok just cause I’m still salty and this needs to be said: just because your story is a bit predictable doesn’t mean it’s bad. sometimes that just means that your story makes sense. if nothing in your story is predictable then you have crossed the line from “keeping viewers on their toes” to “nonsensical nightmare that doesn’t deliver on any front”
Lately a lot of stories that try to hard to be “subversive” and “unpredictable” have turned out shitty because they were more focused on not using certain tropes than telling a good story.
