Congratulations to Taylor Swift for Album of the Year!
FIRST WOMAN TO WIN ALBUM OF THE YEAR THREE TIMESÂ
FOLKLORE AOTY
in my head im like⌠its because sheâs getting album of the year.. right.
physically im here but mentally im holding hands in a circle with swifties praying for aoty
physically i am in a pandemic but emotionally iâm in a storm in my best dress, fearless
i stand by the fact that your interpretation of folklore will be different than anyone elseâs bc the whole point is that people imprint themselves on folklore stories and that is what makes it folklore. like these songs were written to hold many different meanings thatâs the whole entire point
without your past,
you could never have arrived-
so wondrously and brutally,
By design or some violent, exquisite happenstance
...here.
folklore feels like you just found an old collection of letters tied up with ribbon, in a box in someoneâs attic and you wipe off the dust and sit down right there to carefully flip through them and you get a glimpse into the world of whoever wrote them
taylor swift wrote folklore for all the people who loved taylor swift as a child but instead of getting married at eighteen they grew up to be depressed and full of yearningÂ
to put it simply: taylor swift has not yeeâd her last haw
honestly this is when it pays to be a taylor stan well-versed in her entire discography, including and especially her early work and unreleased songs. because the general public knows her for her confessional, straightforward songwriting. theyâre used to taking her lyrics at face value. hence the many MANY texts iâve received in the last hour asking me if taylor âbroke up with her boyfriendâ or if sheâs ok.Â
but if you listen to early unreleased songs and selections of her work throughout the years, sheâs proven sheâs great at putting fictional storylines or other peopleâs stories to song. the emotions are real â theyâre hers. but the details of the events are not ripped from the pages of her diary this time.Â
letting go of this insistence that every detail of every song is a clue to her personal life really frees us up to analyze these songs and find the universal humanity in them instead of just celebrity gossip fodder.Â
Taylor Swiftâs albums
taylor swift invented autumn twice, in 2012 and in 2020, and somehow that was everything
I canât even pick a favourite cos they are all my favourite
This is a turning point in her career and thatâs silly to say for someone on their 8th album but I can FEEL it. The sophistication in the songwriting. The storytelling. The soft poeticism. The way the lyrics drift so perfectly over the melodies. No one who listens to this can exit this album without saying she is the songwriter of this generation and knowing how important her writing ability is to her, that is so important.
i think we can all agree that folklore
