I'm an ardent lover of drama, so I want to share a small piece of Burning Dawn (And I'm also doing this because I'm deeply depressed and just can't start writing a coherent story)
In general, I want to share the very meaning of AU. I'll divide it into small items that will contain canonical things.
1. Ezra and Thrawn find themselves in Chaos together. There they unite for the common good. Now they are allies, and Ezra also becomes a master for several girls navigators. (AU)
2. As a result of the battle between the Resistance and the Empire, the Resistance wins. The rebel sectors of the central galaxy form a New Republic.
After the explosion of the second death star, the death of the Emperor, Tarkin and Vader, a split occurs in the empire. The forces of the galactic empire still exist, but no longer have power over the central cosmos. (CANON)
3. During Thrawn's time in Chaos, he and the Domination form an alliance with the local wild space systems. This coalition will be aimed at protecting and resisting the Grisks. (AU)
4. Since the formation of the New Republic, it has been abandoning its weapons in order to show its subordinate systems that it poses no threat. This means that the New Republic will not be ready for a Grisks attack. The only weapons that the Republic has left are the remnants of the Rebel Resistance, which operates in isolation. (CANON)
5. After breaking through the Grisks blockade, Thrawn and the coalition manage to reach central space and unite with the fragments of the Empire. The regime established by Tarkin is no longer in effect, and the empire's forces under the leadership of Thrawn and other professional tacticians are becoming the very force needed to repel the Grisks attack.
Now this union bears the name "Empire of the Hand/Hands" (LEGENDS)
The main problems of the story, personally and politically.
Ezra, being in the ranks of the Ascedancy, is also part of the New Empire
For his family, who have been waiting for his return, he is now a traitor and a fascist.
The political problem is that the New Republic will not tolerate the presence of the Hand Empire's armed forces in central space.
Now Chancellor Mon Mothma and the other rulers of the Republic need to be persuaded into an alliance or at least a truce.
Convince them not to stick sticks in the wheels of the Hand Empire, and not to interfere with the armed forces to repel the attacks of the Grisks.
That's how it's going to happen. There's a huge potential for developments here, and I really want to write it all down, but I just don't have the will. But I will definitely try.
