Anti-Migrant Violence - Fics for Donations
Right now, we're witnessing a wave of anti-migrant violence in so many places around the world. And while you've almost certainly seen the ICE kidnappings in the US, and may have seen the anti-migrant riots a few months ago in the UK, what's happening in South Africa right now has gotten tragically little press outside the country.
Xenophobic anti-migrant groups gave undocumented immigrants a deadline to get out of the country. Around 25,000 migrants - the vast majority from other African countries, like Malawi, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, and Mozambique - have now fled their homes in South Africa out of fear of violence. Now that the 30 June "deadline" has passed, those who remain are in serious danger, because -
Migrants are facing mass anti-immigrant protests, anti-migrant groups blocking access to healthcare and other services, and violence - including murder. Nigerian and Ghanian migrants have been murdered in the last few weeks - including one Nigerian man who died in police custody, a death the Nigerian government has linked to the wave of anti-migrant violence.

An estimated 10,000 people - most originally from the neighbouring countries of Malawi and Zimbabwe - are now stuck in a camp at the Zimbabwean border. Others have now been camping outside processing centres in cities like Durban for a month in the cold, after being driven from their homes by threats and violence.
This is just the beginning. According to this press statement from Amnesty International, law enforcement has been rounding up refugees and asylum seekers "under the guise of verification processes" (sound familiar?). The South African government has proudly touted the thousands of people driven from the country in recent months, and there are fears it's using the protests as an excuse to push draconian anti-migrant legislation.
