give cover to people who haven't been caught yet by allowing them to use their humanity as "proof" of their innocence

silence any criticism of societal structures and institutions that facilitate those horrible things by putting the focus on individuals who are assumed to be so uniquely monstrous that the ways it was made easy for them are irrelevant

provide a shortcut to dehumanize anyone you feel like killing: simply accuse them of doing a horrible thing

Personally, I've always thought that the best thing would be to create communities where children were Not Allowed, for very, very obvious reasons, and people who realize they SHOULDN'T be anywhere near children can work and live there.

It shouldn't just be 'offshore oil rig' and 'Antarctic research station,' type communities where kids not being welcome is because it's dangerous. An artist colony with a whole bunch of glassblowers, potters and welders who work in the open air, a resort for K-12 teachers on their limited breaks who need time off from kids, an ecological preserve for some species or another that finds smaller-than-typical humans delicious? That's where you keep the non-offender pedophiles.

And the offender ones, well...if there are K-12 teachers, exciting arts n' crafts and dangerous wildlife, there are very, very good reasons for them to stay put, behave themselves and make no attempt to offend again. After all, it would be very unfortunate if someone made a terrible mistake and a horrible accident happened...but if no children were harmed, some interesting art resulted, certain rare animals were fed and some overworked, underpaid professionals got to experience some enrichment, that would be less bad than, say, judicial murder.

And if everyone understood that as a social contract, then the same former offenders could simply participate in mystery-solver night at the resort monthly, thus helping train the K-12 teachers to 'hunt' others like they used to be, enjoying some improv community roleplaying and having a nice, restorative-justice way to help reduce the amount of overall harm in the world.

Plus, people who tried to complain and demand to speak to the manager out of indignation that they couldn't vacation there with their kids could be told about the rare wild animals, the very dangerous arts n' crafts and THEN the pedophiles. Outranking the taipans n' tigers to a stray HOA board member might simply be better than their previous fixation.

Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.

At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.

Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”

if you've never seen the film Pride (2014), which tells the story of LGSM, you really really need to. Set aside time to watch it this month. Extremely important part of leftist and queer history, and a lesson on what "solidarity forever" means in practice that everyone desperately needs to learn right now.

Here's the r/piracy megathread if you need it. & you can pair that viewing with this article on the real-life history of Lesbians & Gays Support the Miners; they don't make it explicit in the film, but every founding member was a socialist / communist, and that article goes more in depth about the movement.

Notably: LGSM did not wait for the mining communities to be openly supportive of queers and anti-homophobia before showing solidarity. They saw the connection between oppression of Welsh miners and the oppression of queers, and chose solidarity first. It was this choice to materially support other oppressed people, and see the queer community and mining communities are inherently connected through their experiences of oppression and resistance, that allowed the relationship seen above to exist at all.

None of this could have happened if LGSM's solidarity was dependent on the mining communities being queer allies at the time of Thatcher's attacks on them. This solidarity was born out of queer communists seeing things from a broader perspective than just "getting gay rights." They saw how the labor struggle and the queer struggle are connected, and organized to provide material assistance through food and funding. We should all internalize this and seek to apply these lessons to our own communities.

Side note: polonium-210 is a very dangerous isotope, however it "does not pose a radiation hazard when kept outside the body", as the alpha particle it emits have very little penetration power and cannot pierce even the outer layers of dead skin. It has still killed countless people, though, not because of children's rings, but because of tobacco. Polonium latches onto and concentrates in tobacco leaves, leading to heavy smokers being exposed to more radiation than survivors of the Chernobyl disaster.

A cake mix plus a can of soda equals a bakeable cake which requires no eggs or refrigeration and which can be baked in a common dorm-room or office sized microwave in a ceramic dish. The food pantry doesn't always have eggs for free and eggs can't always be fit into a budget, plus some people have egg allergies. Frosting can be managed by taking a second can of the same or a complementary flavor soda (not-diet works best,) pouring about half to two-thirds of the can into a small saucepan, heating it until it simmers, stirring constantly and either adding scrounged packets of table sugar or slowly pouring in and blending the rest of the can once the heated, simmering soda reduces to a thick syrup. This results in a delightful, breakfast-pastry-style glaze, which firms nicely upon cooling and which, if you can pour a little of the syrup into a sandwich-sized Ziploc, cut the corner off and pipe quickly, with efficient lines of cursive, possibly adding part of a Kool-Aid packet to the Ziploc to dye it first, yes, it can be used to add 'Happy Birthday' and a name.

Yeah, so, the soda crackdown is attacking birthdays and Mother's Day for the kids who will do extra pushups or clean the classroom to win a packet of sunflower seeds so their mom can have protein for gains and a coffee cake that looks like the ones at church.

I'm not saying the people behind it are evil in choosing to treat people like things and prioritize their own big feelings-driven wants over fellow humans' needs, including emotional and mental health -but I will consider the possibility, out of Christian and humanist charity, that they may instead simply be deeply and profoundly stupid on a level normally regarded as unfortunare when noticed in dogs.

Mainly, they are missing good cake that can be made in a break room. Kids are smart. Let them teach you things.

This is like the time my kid and husband used an emulator handheld, some code hackery, hella incredibly careful soldering and a broken portable DVD player to make an original, working Virtual Boy run line vectors in synch with stereo vaporwave music.
