To the very few that found this page funny, silly, or hit you square in your sense memory, I have officially regained access to this page now that “notrealsportsnews” is back but under a diff blog.

So to get me going again, lets try a list shall we?

F*cking Mind Games

I was never one to get sick during speed camp, off-season conditioning, in-season conditioning, the weight room or a game. But what would get me through it was the idea of having vomit come out of me...and hating that feeling. The taste. The way your teeth feel after. The ribs feeling like they are no longer attached to your spine. Or how embarrassing it would be to throw up-wards while laying flat on your back reppin’ out 225 as many times as your body & mind allows (TIP: no matter how much you hate your spotter, your puke will never reach them).  I say mind because that’s clearly what allows people to go beyond their limits to places they can’t imagine. Physically. Emotionally. And you guessed it, mentally.  Once you break down those barriers there’s no going back.  How many times have you seen or heard anyone accomplish a goal, and then regress by choice? An injury or retirement (quitter) is really the only instance.  If you are out of practice at that activity, its as simple as mentally re-focusing until you accomplish the feat once again, and you’re at an advantage because you have a secret in your back pocket. You’ve previously already done it, so the confidence & ability reveal itself naturally.  

For instance, selling a script leads to another sold script, and another...and another. Maybe you were a part of the 04′ Red Sox & overcame a 0-3 series deficit to beat the Yankees in Game 7, only to go on and WIN the World Series.  Selling 1,000 shares of stock leads to 1 million shares of sold stock. You win the NBA Finals & you lead the team back the following year, win or lose you’re there again to make the most of it. And so on & so on.  POINT IS, you know how it tastes, feels like, and what it takes to accomplish it...now.

The struggle is getting back on.  I get it. I’m 10 years removed from a high intensity, nothing else matters in the world, type of dedication to a sport.  I’m thankful for that fact. Barf.  Of course you miss things you loved. Still love. Just ask Michael Jordan.

On the bright, there are plenty of opportunities in life that will continue to challenge your mind and body that can give you the same feelings of accomplishment. Success isn’t typically the solution to a mental hurdle, but the PROCESS it takes to get there. I know right? You think you’d enjoy the moment at the end but its always the ride on the way there.  Whatever your new hurdles are in life, family, being a parent, friends, work, sport, writing, MATH, whatever.... I wish you all a HARD EARNED ride.

I’ll let you know what it feels like when my ride is over and I can look back to make sure I f*cking enjoyed the process of all the mental games I play.  So far so good as I’m still here.

Isiah, what happened buddy?

Let me take you back to the pre-game for the 1998 NBA Finals, it’s Bulls-Jazz, Game 6, in Utah. But what happened ISIAH THOMAS? Was it nerves, anger you weren’t playing, out of breath, or a bad teleprompter? It’s 2015 and I should get over it but the statistical statement that was made (see below) during the pre-game just did not go well buddy. And you are one of my favorite players all time, #11.

Isiah Thomas - “Now it took Kukoc 11 field goals, Kukoc made 11 field goals on forty-two...on 13 shots. Pippen and Jordan (slight giggle) took 42 field goals... to combine for 11 field goal attempts.” 

Re-watching it, it’s a good thing they cut to a graphic of the Bulls Big 3 field goal percentage because I can’t imagine seeing the looks on the faces of Bob Costas & Doug Collins in that moment. It has to be one of the worst deliveries about shot attempts recorded.

Vanderbilt football tweets they 'don't need permission' as four players face rape charges

“We don’t need your permission.” Those words were in a Tweet posted by Vanderbilt University football’s official Twitter account Thursday that was quickly deleted. It came as four former football players face trial on rape charges, according to the Tennessean. You claim to not need permission... what other context do we need that admits your guilt? The only way to “top” (and by top I mean make worse) this is to reveal the video footage of which I’m sure they have... Another sad day for a former athlete (me) to reflect on the horrific behavior from the modern day athlete. Not that shit didn’t go down involving athletes before its just getting worse...and worse... and worse. I give these assholes permission to never accomplish their NFL dreams. R. Kelly in Space Jam 2?

This is not about LeBron James! Weird right? People are already assuming he is in this but is R. Kelly going to be singing for the Space Jam 2 soundtrack? If this animated film gets made into a sequel... will “I Believe I Can Fly” make it in, or will R. Kellz be creating something brand new? 

For all our (the world) sake we should say no. We should not be rewarding someone for a life of abuse on women/little girls BUT MORE SO because this a kids movie.  Will adults, sports buffs, and fans of animated movies be in attendance yes, but that doesn’t mean they want to hear the raping sounds of R. Kelly’s voice either.  I have no say in the music business or any business for that matter, just my opinions & morals.

Athletic Thompson family reaches new heights

Babe Ruth struck out in his first at-bat. So did Ted Williams. And now so has Trayce Thompson, whose Major League debut Tuesday night as a pinch-hitter for the Chicago White Sox lasted four pitches, produced a skidload of memories and paid off on a lifetime of work, focus and dreams.

Trayce claims that when the pitch was on it’s way, he got lost in light of his brother Klay who was just a few rows behind home plate. But not to worry, Trayce has champion in his blood so not to worry White Sox.  Yes, he’s been battle tested in the minors but NO, he isn’t the other half of a Sox Splash Brothers... unless the Sox find a way to get Seth Curry to come over from the NBA.

That Unforgettable Smell

One part of the journey into a sports locker room is through ones nose. I can get gross here but don’t see the need, this will simply be the positive memories that are triggered due to medical tapes, stinky pads, smelly socks, and the occasional fresh scent of orange zest.

As a high schooler you become accustomed to these smells as you prepare for your battle that day. You lace up your cleats or specialty shoe, tape your wrist with the stolen pre-wrap from the training office, and throw that week old unwashed uniform on.

You smell something new. It’s the tunnel or hallway from the locker room to your arena, whether it’s tennis, swimming, soccer/etc. It’s the smell of the unknown, the hopeful, and the one place you can let out any screams before you storm the battle field.

It’s time. Warm ups have concluded and the game is about to start. All you have is the few seconds of final gasps and breathes before you’re slapped on the back and sent in the game. You smell your warm up top as you rip it off over your head, the paper cup from the water cooler gives you the courage to leave it all out there as it will refresh you once you return.

You’re exhausted, drained, legs shaking, knees weak, arms are heavy, and you can’t even take the uniform off. Now back in the locker room the game has ended. Everyone is dejected, coach yelling, sweat dripping into your eyes as you bow your head as if to be punished for a loss. 

It’s the smell of defeat. No matter how common or how rare we all know the smell. It’s disgusting, you hope to never breathe another breath of it.  Til next game it holds you over, pushing you, helping you, and fading as you come closer & closer to that next opportunity to wipe it from your short term memory bank.
