Hey y’all! I’ve been on writeblr for a few years now, so I figured it’s time for a fresh start on a new blog lol. This will now be my main account (no more side-blog confusion!) completely dedicated to sharing snippets of my work, and for interacting with my fellow writers :)

I write mostly some form of fantasy, because I’m an escapist at heart ✨

aside from writing I also like to draw, make moodboards, and occasionally some edits now and then

ARCADIA [working title] | ya/na fantasy

My bonafide main novel project about wolves who can shape-shift into humans. One is Fredrick, a soldier in the Queen’s royal army who just wants to forget he’s a wolf. The other is Sloane, a homeless girl from the outskirts that never even realized she was one. The plan is for this to be the first book in either a duology or trilogy.

Includes: ace protagonist, found family, Angst™, lgbt+ cast, forest aesthetics, multiple identity crises, enemies to reluctant allies, characters with daddy issues, and wolves!

SHE BEWITCHED THE STARS | contemporary fantasy/romance

Side wip in desperate need of a plot. It’s about a young chicana woman, Selena, who wants to learn more about magick from Cassiopeia—a mysterious witch with great power. Reluctant to teach her, Cass eventually gives in, unable to resist Selena’s charm.

Includes: celestial metaphors, wlnb POC, breaking generational curses, an excuse to talk about crystals and tarot cards, mexican folklore, that feeling I get when I listen to “I Could Fall In Love” by Selena Quintanilla, and more!

Things that take time & many tries to get right:

learning to be a good friend/partner

healing from depression, failures or heartbreak

becoming amazing at an art or skill

overcoming anxiety, insecurities and low body image

overcoming the need to isolate yourself

changing self-hating thoughts to kinder ones

making a real connection with someone

overcoming self-defeating and self-sabotaging thoughts

learning how to study effectively

finding a sense of stability and calmness at your core

quitting habits or addictions

leaving people and behaviours that turn you into the worst version of yourself

getting used to healthier coping mechanisms & mindsets that feel fake

treating yourself like you truly care about yourself

becoming the person you always wanted to be

Writeblr Re-Introduction

Hi there, I’m LJ! Until recently I went by the username shadescrawls. It’s been a year, and things have changed so I felt it was time for a re-introduction.

I am 26, LGBT+, and go by she/her or he/him.

I mostly write Fantasy, however I have WIPs spanning Adventure, Romance, Science Fiction, and others. I am also an artist! I hope to turn some of my projects into graphic novels, and draw character and concept art!

My main project is a Sci-Fi/Urban Fantasy script called Neon Grunge.

After years and years of intensive researching and studying we came to the conclusion that wolves themselves seem to not really know either

So my writing teacher had a serious thing about “looking” language as description. And I could totally see her point. Especially when you read fic based on film or TV, there’s a lot of stage direction that crops up and a LOT of “he looked at her” “she looked at him” “their gazes met” etc as description.

The thing was, she wasn’t saying not to use “looking” descriptions at all. She was talking about a problem she saw as a professional editor where sometimes there’d be a looking stage direction description every other sentence. It meant that sometimes when a significant “Look” actually happened, it was lost in the flood of less important gestures. Basically, she saw them like adverbs, not wholly bad, but overused as a crutch. 

She was also making the point that TV and film is actually quite rich in some ways with things like micro-expressions and gestures–two actors with chemistry staring into each other’s eyes can carry volumes of significance–but also quite limited. With visual art rather than prose, you can’t capture a lot of internal and three-dimensional description that prose can. Sure I can describe people’s eyes meeting again and again, but as a prose writer I have the power to describe all of the internal feelings and echoes of interactions as well, and those are often richer than the pure doll-like posing of characters who do this, say that, do this, say that etc. 

Since working with my teacher, I’ve tried to excise looking language in my own work to the bare and powerful minimum, but I’ve also tried to figure out why it’s so prevalent, and I think I happened on a conclusion. The thing is, looking language is things the author can consciously see with others or act out themselves. So you see in prose a lot of conscious actions. He stepped forward. She nodded. They gestured. 

But prose also has the power to reveal unconscious gestures. Thoughts. Things that people don’t normally notice but are true, and powerful to describe as a writer. So I suppose the take-away from this little aside would be, when writing your description, don’t just think about the stuff people do consciously, think about the things they do unconsciously, internally, and three-dimensionally in a way that film and art can’t do but prose can.
