I don’t love Andor for its politics…

I’ve got to say that I completely agree re Doctor Who being a series that was exploring oppressive regimes and authoritarianism long before Andor. Various media within Star Wars was doing that exact same thing too. It’s done in very much greater depth in numerous pre-existing works of science fiction. Star Trek DS9. Blake’s 7. Etc! There’s nothing new in Andor, politically speaking. The political message is extremely simple: “authoritarianism is bad and should be stopped before it is too late”. 

But that’s not why I love it. For me, it’s not what it’s saying but how it’s saying it that’s important. I love Andor for its depiction of complex characters and their relationships with each other and their own particular Cause . The fact that there’s frequentlylittle agreement about what exactly they are fighting for, as opposed to against, and how the fight should be fought, feeds those interpersonal conflicts. And it’s those characters and conflicts that I love. This goes for those on the side of the Rebellion but also those with the Empire, and all the shades in between. 

In the same way, I don’t watch The Americans to explore the politics of the USA and Soviet Union in the 1980s. But I do watch it to see what life is like for those who have been fighting the Cold War for so long. The effect of time and change. The constant pressure of having to choose between personal interests and loyalty. If I want complex and realistic details about the politics of Revolution I’ll go looking for that elsewhere. I think it’s very much a side character in both series. 

Honestly, I’m kind of rueful that Andor is sometimes held up as an example of a show with great inspirational politics because it kind of elevates the show into something that it isn’t and at the same time reduces it to something that can be waved around like a placard as a protest . Still, it’s keeping Andor as a hot topic and popular series over a year on and if it’s inspiring the right kind of political activism, that’s obviously great. 

For me, it’s first and foremost a gripping and moving drama about characters I care about or who I find fascinating. The writing, acting, production values etc are outstanding. At the end of the day, the main message is a pretty simple archetypal one that it’s been told thousands of times before. Its parallels to US politics aren’t surprising because the simplicity allows for that interpretation . As a British woman, I kind of shrug at all that. It’s been relevant before and it will be relevant again. And if people are finding inspiration in it, that’s great.

My love of Andor - now easily my favourite television series of the last 10 years - is all about how this old, old story is being told. Therein for me lies its brilliance.

Just wanted to say that "everything has already been done" applies to arts in general and so yes every story has already been told.

You can tell someone if you like X maybe you'll like Y but you can't tell Y is better than X because it was there first.

People enjoy and relate to different works for different reasons.

i have to say tho i am feeling more sympathetic towards RTD than most people seem to be. calling in Billie Piper was, by his own admission, a desperate hail mary to avoid the show looking like it had no future. i would imagine the lack of a script is bcos he was never u know paid to write one rather than bcos he simply didn't bother. man doesn't work for free and he has other projects on the go.

i can see why he opted not to come up with a formal plan for the special until he got confirmation that he was definitely going to be writing it. & i do get why from a PR perspective he opted to act like everything was OK rather than publicly be like 'we have no plan'. i don't think he's the real villain of this story.

like to my understanding the root cause of everything going wrong right now is the Disney deal going south and I don't think the Disney deal was his idea nor do i think it going poorly was necessarily his fault. yes he could have made a better 2.5 seasons of dr who but the most Reviled part of it (Reality War ending) happened because Disney was refusing to commit to a third season. so uh. yeah.

i don't think this is a story with a clear individual villain tbh like i don't blame Disney for pulling out as clearly they anticipated this being a more profitable venture than it was and I don't blame the BBC for entering into the Disney Devil's Bargain in the first place as clearly they were financially struggling to make the show. im not really convinced RTD doing a better job would have salvaged the situation.

Actually Yes, there is a clear villain that no-one is acknowledging: he’s called Sir Robbie Gibb, and when we talk about Lord And Masters At The BBC we’re talking about him. He was the one who tried to get Doctor Who cancelled at the end of Thirteen’s era and constantly afterwards by removing the money so Russell had to find other mechanisms because he says the BBC shouldn’t be funding QUOTE: “Divisive Woke Content.” He looks exactly like you imagined him to.

TV Writing Jesus himself couldn’t have kept this show going, and that nobody brings up this guy at all is proof no-one here understands how anything actually works in the real world. You’re an 8 year old yelling at your dad for getting fired and you having to move house because you can’t yet conceive of him having a boss evil enough to just fire him for being gay. Doctor Who was cancelled because It’s Woke™. That’s it. It’s the same as everything else. Nobody even cares about the money anymore. Everything is just the Scooby-Doo mask pulling-off scene to find Regressive Authoritarianism underneath forever. The Big Bad is always the same, and it’s not the quite literally loudest pro-trans voice in UK media creation. Russell is the one person who ever tries to use his power to change anything for the better and instead we’re ignoring the people actually trying to kill us, just becoming the people we hate in politics because it’s easier than facing the reality that we can play the best game of chess in our life but never defeat The Machine.

The current BBC is staffed by this man and his cronies, and all they wanted to do was kill off Doctor Who without getting backlash. That was their goal, their singular Goal. Not money. Killing it. Because at the end of the day they’re right, Doctor Who is inherently Woke Content and under our current Regressive Authoritarian governments that has not, and will not be allowed to stand.

(“But then what do we do?” Uh, you can vote Green (or whatever actually left equivalent exists after they declare it a terrorist group) at the next election and hope they have enough of an authoritarian spine of their own to actually put huge pressure on the BBC, tear out the rot, and replace those people despite having no standard mechanism to do so. If the BBC even exists by then. Or elections. Or life in general. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

Yep. Also why he said earlier “ I’m not the one you’ve gotta convince” “They were never gonna believe you” to Jyn, and his concern that she doesn’t have the actual message. If the council didn’t trust in and believe Kleya they’re not going to trust in and believe Jyn either.
