When I visited Chicago, the very first thing to weird me out from the airport was⌠how almost everywhere had revolving doors.
Iâm Australian. Sure, we do have those doors, but the vast majority of places in Sydney are automatic sliding doors or old-fashioned manual push/pulls because we donât need to block out the cold and wind the same way here.
So every day I experienced a culture clash with something as basic as what doors were normal for me.
Americans who say they donât have a culture are plagued with defaultism beyond belief. Culture isnât just made up of costumes and language and the largest stuff, itâs constructed of a billion small things you do every day that you never even consider could be different because thatâs just ânormalâ to your daily life. No one has no culture just because theyâre not adhering to the biggest markers they can consciously recognise.

Hey. Why isnât the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isnât that fucked up? Does anyone else think thatâs absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! Thatâs a big deal! Iâve never thought about it before but now that I have, itâs ridiculous to me that thatâs not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why donât we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
Itâs July 20th. Thatâs the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. Iâm ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and Iâm going to have a goddamn potluck. Youâre all invited.

Wakes up from hypnosis where he was about to marry a woman heâs never seen before with his mystery girlâs voice, the instant he wakes up then the cute girl heâs actually fallen in love with now has that voice. Then she drops to the floor and has a fish tail, and then the first girl is suddenly cackling âtoo late!â and bursting out of her skin. So it turns out sheâs actually an octopus woman who drags herself over to the real mystery girl - whoâs a mermaid?! Theyâre real?! - and taking her back into the ocean. And Eric has no idea whatâs going on here but okay, one of these women is clearly evil and he needs to go after his mystery girl.
And all of this happens/he realizes what he has to do within like, a single minute.
Prior to this he was just living out a sweet romance after having a Meet Cute with a shipwrecked girl, but okay, guess heâs involved in whatever the fuck this is. Acting first, questioning later.
And this is all before the kaiju attacks.
And let's also remember that Eric is one of the few Disney heroes who actively, deliberately murdered the villain.
He went "Okay then" and killed.
I would say killed the villain, not murdered. Murder implies that it was premeditated and out of malice. Eric was defending his girlfriend's life while Ursula was attempting to murder her. He was well and fully justified in his actions.
In legal terms, 1st degree murder is any murder that is premeditated, even if the premeditation was only for a minute. 2nd degree murder involves no premeditation but resulting in a deliberate action to cause harm. 3rd degree/manslaughter is purely accidentally and/or a result of gross negligence.
With this in mind, it's safe to say that Eric did murder Ursula, as he deliberately steered the ship to impale her with the bowsprit, but would be pardoned on account that he was defending the life of another (Ariel).
THIS IS ALSO TRUE.
Eric has a lot going for him. As others have noted, as well as all the above, from the outset he's shown to be a hard worker, rather than a pampered prince, he works alongside his crew, earning their respect. He does everything he can do to protect them when they are in trouble, and going back into a burning ship to save his (adorable) dog
