Interview with the Belle Game
The Belle Game, a dark/noise pop band from Vancouver is slowly but surely developing a reputation as a force to be reckoned with on the Canadian indie pop scene. Fronted by the smoky sweet vocals of Andrea Lo, the band is about to kick into overdrive with the release of their first full-length effort called Ritual Tradition Habit which is being released through Boompa Records this Spring. Certainly a departure from their previous releases, Ritual Tradition Habit promises to be a darker more ephemeral musical experience than before. We chatted with Andrea about the new direction the band is taking, their latest dark and twisty cult themed music video and the importance of the glockenspiel. Having formed as a mixture of stage fright, convenience and craigslist, The Belle Game despite seeming slightly ramshackly in its composition of members actually have a very sweet creation story. Having been highschool friends first, when the opportunity came to include each other in a musical venture, they jumped at the opportunity. Fellow bandmate Adam Nanji was recording a solo album at the time and recruited a few of his pals to help him perform for one of his shows in Vancouver. “He came back to Van and he was too chicken to play a show on his own” Andrea explains, “and being old high school mates he called us up to play with him. He was in the process of recording his own album but we enjoyed playing so much together that we used his remaining studio time to record our first EP.“ A serendipitous decision as it turns out because after that first recording session there was no looking back for the group, they were a band. While it is expected that any new band goes through a few growing pains at the beginning, The Belle Game, despite a few shift changes in the lineup has grown together nicely to create what can most easily be described as a unique breed of art-rock indie pop, with a distinctly west coast flavour.
But you can find out about all that stuff with a quick glance at the band’s webpage, and when we sat down with Andrea we didn't want to ask her the same questions she’d been asked a million times, because no one really wants to read about that anyways. What we were most interested in finding out about was the latest exploit from the band- their creepy cult like music video for the tune Andrea penned “Wait up for you”. Andrea explains that “the basic premise of the song, was about two people- a couple-who broke free of family bonds and as a result one of them experiences the recklessness of freedom and goes kind of crazy with that freedom and the other must suffer the results of the others recklessness.” A theme not unfamiliar to anyone that’s ever yearned for independence and freedom but unsure of exactly what to do with that freedom when they get it. It’s like those college kids that have never had a drink before in their life, and get to res and just go buck-wild and end up in the drunk tank 3 times in one week. Freedom can be equally liberating and suffocating, and sometimes both at the same time. “The video” Andrea explains “is an offshoot of the original lyrics, you are introduced to two main characters, the cult leaders daughter the red head and the new arrivals daughter the brown haired girl. It’s a cult and it weaves through the tapestry and delicacies of the cult environment and what's sinful and what’s moral”. Continuing she explains the evolution of the two girls’ relationship “we see them spending more time together and developing feelings for each other So the cult leaders daughter makes a plan to escape together to be free and lead their own lives together, but after all the planning, the new arrival daughter ends up staying behind while the cult leader daughter flees.” The video displays that dichotomy- the sinful and the moral- with rich autumnal hues and a velvety soft lense, which gives the characters in the video more depth and emotion. The song itself is sweet sounding, but not overly so, juxtaposing perfectly with the sinister undertones of the video. In particular there is a scene, set during a particular happy section of the song, that shows a man who had been caught in a compromising position with a girl from the cult, being water-boarded in front of a group of children. “The water-boarding was showcasing the consequence of escaping by using the boy/girl couple as a scapegoat” explains Andrea. “The culture is very manipulative and violent and the video drives home how serious the situation was and what the girls risked by running away”
The video in many ways is a gentle introduction to the new direction the band is taking. Diverging away from the dream pop sound of their past and heading confidently towards the darker more emotional sound of their future. They use complex guitar and keyboard lines, anchored by Andrea’s sweet, melodic and graceful voice to create a confessional and deeply personal sound. Their shows are fun and energetic and you can tell that all the members are drawing from a deep well of musical creativity. Listening to Andrea speak with such passion and integrity about The Belle Game, you can’t help but to hope for the bands continued success. It's bands like the Belle Game that come together because of a mutual love of music and stay together because its fun and they like it that true musical integrity comes from. It was an absolute pleasure to learn more about these cool kids from Van and we really hope you enjoy the strange and wonderful offerings of the Belle Game as much as we do. Lots of Love. LadyWood.

Greco-Roman
Hi buddies!
I've got two beautiful paint animations for you guys to check out brought to you by the Greco-Roman label. The first track is called "Wolves" and is the debut single of sultry songstress Valentina.
Greco-Roman is a collective of musicians, DJs and artists on the Berlin-London axis who "run an eclectic record label, DJ together and throw speakeasy parties". Damn those Europeans are next level...so much so that it's under level. The second track is called "Gabriel" featuring Valentina by Joe Goddard and you don't even need drugs for the video to be trippy.
Enjoy and much love,
H.

Wicked Games
If the name "Wicked Games," by Chris Isaak doesn't ring a bell, it will only take a few moments with this track to be pulled back in time and feel immersed in acknowledgement. Wether you were in the womb, or dancing in the clubs when this 1989 track was released, you most certainly have heard this song. Lady Wood was in attendance to Calgary's Folk Festival last year where Chris Isaak was breaking it down with old school melodies, and a very peculiar outfit as seen above. The original "Wicked Games' features Chris on a black and white scened beach, with a super sexy lady friend. Our leading man seems to be dwelling on the wickedness of love, and it's place in this cruel world, but in the end he concludes that "No one loves no one." I would tend to agree, as even the old crotchety neighbour or the conservative OCD teacher has loved or is in love with someone. Love stitches the lining of friendships, families and lovers but it is a wicked game as Chris Isaak tells us.
Check the remix of "Wicked Games," by Adriatique and Thyladomid. It's a free download and it has the same chill vibe the original track carries. If you're interested to see the original chart topping hit with Chris Isaak himself it is featured below. In my opinion Mr.Isaak hit a peak of his career with this video, and I wouldn't be surprised if the half naked visual stimuli made a lot of controversy with the bible thumping parents of the 80s and 90s. Viva la sexy videos!

Coeur de Pirate - Or how I really should have paid more attention in french class
Coeur de Pirate An Interview with Beatrice Martin Written By: Christine Waiand, originally published in Beatroute September 2012
Sleepy Sundays ft. Sorcha Richardson
Today's sleepy Sunday features 22-year-old up-and-coming songstress Sorcha Richardson. Richardson is a Dublin Irish native and in 2009 decided to take her music career more serious by relocating to NYC. Her latest album titled Sleep Will Set Me Free is a beautiful collection of emotionally charged songs that feature acoustic guitar rifts and piano melodies, which complement her amazing voice so nicely. I would classify her in the lo-fi folk/dream pop/acoustic genre.
The first track is remix of Richardson's song "I Heart NYC" which is a tribute/love letter to her favorite city. Tristan Fogel, the German genius behind the wicked edit of this song, takes this track from an 8 to 10 in my opinion (listen to the original here). Yay for collaboration!
The second track is called "Nicki" which is a collaboration between Richardson and her good friend Nicki Muller. While Muller was battling brain cancer, her and Richardson started this musical project where Muller's journal would form the basis of lyrics for a new song. Sadly, Nicki passed away but Sorcha finished the project in memory of her. Watch the beautiful tribute video below.
Get cozy, grab a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy this blizzardy Sunday with Sorcha!
Much love,
Hannah
Sassy Saturdays
Here's a tune to get your toes tapping while you get ready for a big Saturday night out.
ZZ Ward, is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, reminiscent of Rickie Lee Jones. With a voice that sounds a little like Adele with a kick of bluesy soul put into it, ZZ is taking the world by storm. ZZ Ward (aka Zsuzsanna Eva Ward) calls her sound “Dirty Shine” a phrase she describes as a mix of blues, soul, hip-hop and pop — and whatever else she’s in the mood to throw in. She also plays guitar, piano and harmonica, proving that she is drawing inspiration from a deep well of musical creativity. Her debut album "Til the Casket Drops" was released by Hollywood Records only last October and her shows are selling out in minutes.
With the success of other southern blues/rhythm bands like the Alabama Shakes and Canada's own Deep Dark Woods, I'm sure ZZ Ward has a long career in front of her.
Shout out to Geoff Z for the tip, proving once again his impeccable musical taste.

Get Naked It's Friday!
Here is a super sexy video to get everyone going for the weekend. I could comment on the lyrical depth and witty undertones of the what the girls in this video are saying, but my knowledge of the french language is as vast as George Bush's knowledge on Canada; fuck all really. I was once wrote a french letter to a friend which began,
Chere Louise,
Comment t'appelle tu?...
To all my accomplices bastardizing the french canadian language alongside myself, this directly translates to: Dear Louise, What is your name?
Yup. Maybe I'm no better than the Bush man.
Happy Naked Friday My Friends! Enjoy this random and raw video by the French electro/pop group Make The Girl Dance.

Diamonds- Ben Howard
What is the sound of an avalanche taking out a dolphin? What do get when you cross a hamburger with a hot dog? The answer is: WILD FLAG.
When you think of Portland you may not immediately think of the comedic duo of Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, but you really should. If you are unfamiliar with the show Portlandia then get yourself familiarized right quick, it’s a crazy batch of hilariousness wrapped up in a convenient 30-minute package that you would be amiss to neglect. In addition to what is sure to be your new favorite show, the city of Portland in conjunction with Washington, D.C. has also delivered to us the foursome of ladies that make up the super group Wild Flag. Wild Flag, is the brain child of the immensely talented and floppy haired singer/songwriter/actress/comedian/all around rad chick Carrie Brownstein and some of her former music colleagues. When she tired of making comedic gold with Fred Armisen, she convinced three of her best musician lady friends to join her in a new music venture- Mary Timony, Rebecca Cole and Janet Weiss. The four women at one time or another have played with either Sleater-Kinney, Helium, Quasi, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, or The Minders- not an unimpressive list. The formation of Wild Flag was an organic process that allowed considerable time for the women to figure out exactly what they wanted the band to be, and what they didn't want it to be. “We wanted to figure out dynamics, hear how the songs breathed in a live context, build cohesion and unity, and emerge as a singular force prior to putting those sounds onto tape” Brownstein says. Explaining the growth process of the band Brownstein explains that Wild Flag always intended to grow organically, never wanting to take for granted that an audience existed based on previous endeavors.”
The foursome quietly released their self-titled debut album on September 13 with Merge Records. The album was recorded live in April 2011 in Sacramento California at the Hanger, a renowned recording venue where Sleater-Kinney had recorded many of their hit records. After listening to the album in its entirety, to say that these ladies play with gumption and confidence would be a severe understatement. They have a natural coolness that comes across in every note they sing, every chord they strum. Drawing considerable inspiration from her Sleater-Kinney days, Brownstein infuses the title track ‘Romance’ with the perfect balance of catchy lyrics and intense drums struts, singing “sound is the blood between me and you”. Seamlessly transitioning into the second track ‘Something came over me’ she longingly sings “I want you here right now”, pulling the listener wantonly into the track. When you really listen to the lyrics of either of these songs, you realize that she is not singing to some ex-lover, but to music itself. The entire album is a love song to the art form that the four women in Wild Flag have based their lives around. In Brownstein’s now defunct NPR music blog, Monitor Mix she said that “music put a weapon in my hand and words in my mouth it backed me up and shielded me, it shook me and scared me and showed me the way; music opened me up to living and being and feeling”. That sense of admiration and respect infuses the rest of the album and is most notable again in Glass Tambourine, “Listen to the music, to the music, before it passes you by, if you don’t lose it your gonna use it” she sings sweetly. It’s a rare treat when you can feel the love that the artist feels for the music they are playing infused through the tracks and directly into your headphones but it comes across loud and clear in Wild Flag.
This album was born not out a desire for success- for the women in Wild Flag have already independently seen plenty of that- but out of desire to play the kind of music they wanted to play. They didn’t even have a name for the band before they started playing live gigs, because frankly it wouldn’t have mattered what they were called, they knew that the songs they were playing would speak for themselves. It takes a certain kind of person to have that much faith in their own musicality, but if anyone was going to do it, it would be these gals. It’s worrying that due to the organic way that Wild Flag formed that we may not hear that many more releases from the band, a fact Brownstein has alluded to in the past. Having said that, if you have the opportunity to see the ladies on stage, then take it, the chance may not come around again. The foursome will be touring the festival circuit this spring and summer and you can catch them at Sasquatch and Bonnaroo.
Much love,
-C

Mad Mixes by DJ Hannes Fischer
Hannes Fischer is a young, boy faced German DJ who I must say simultaneously scares and arouses me. His remixed tracks give me an immediate lady wood yet looking at him kind of makes me feel like I'm staring into the eyes of the big bad wolf; and that shit ain't good whether you're in the Duck Sauce music video or the child's fairytale. He's scratched the notes of many tracks such as Lana Del Ray's "Summertime Sadness," Dems' "Down On You," and my favourite Souls of Mischief's "93 til Infinity." I grew up learning and loving Hip Hop as day after day it blared through the walls of my older brother's room. Currently I'm torn between whether these remixes are giving credit to the right people but Hannes' version brought me back to the original Souls of Mischief track as well. I've grown to appreciate them as two sides of the same coin and I can respect what each side offers to the table. Check out Hannes and what he's putting out. You won't regret it...

Gypsy Myth
I want to open the music floor to a genre that is near and dear to my heart and Balkan culture. A genre so fresh and instrumental you'll feel like snapping your fingers, and tapping your toes while walking down the street or sitting in your office chair. It's gypsy music. That's right, gypsy music is an actual genre alongside the lives of gypsies being real life things. Many people once imagined gypsies to be mythical creatures of the story world, but thanks to Borat and reality tv shows, people are starting to see the true light. If you still aren't sure, I'll tell you that all the gypsies that live in Macedonia, Croatia, Serbia, etc are alive and well. In Macedonia, my family and I have been swarmed by gypsies throwing dirty children at our feet and trying to take our wallets. They are the Balkan Houdinis' of the bartering schemes for money and possessions. A serbian friend of mine, once had a gypsy tell her to give him her money or he would give her lice. I mean "Ew," but being around them enough you start to be unfazed by their peculiar comments. When immersed in a life alongside gypsies you develop a love/hate relationship with them. Certain people lean to one side of the spectrum more strongly than the other, but they are part and parcel of Eastern Europe, and the one thing that makes me proud of a gypsy is how they can blow on that horn. Like the trumpet, the instrument, so get your mind out of the gutter. Christmas, birthday parties, and anniversaries are the best kind when there is a damn good gypsy band throwing down some serious tunes. At the end of the night everyone has usually consumed more moonshine than exists in the Adriatic Sea but those dancing shoes and brassy instruments never stop.
Here is one of my favorite gypsy tracks. It's by the Amsterdam Klezmer Band with Shantel and the Bucovina Club Orchestra. Since Klezmer bands are of Yiddish heritage, its a more remixed gypsy track, but it's a sick jam. Enjoy.

Rilo Kiley- Silver Lining
In support of Jennifer Lawrence's Best Actress win tonight for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook, I present to you Rilo Kiley's Silver Lining. The song was also featured on the latest episode of the HBO show Girls, which I am taking as a sign. I think its the universe telling me to look for more silver linings in my own life. And maybe, just maybe, try to turn them into gold. Or maybe its telling me I need to switch my profession and try to become an oscar winning actress. I haven't decided yet. Either way here's the ever lovely Jenny Lewis. -C
"And I'm not going back into rags or in the hole
And our bruises are coming
But we will never fold
and I was your silver lining
As the story goes
I was your silver lining but now I'm gold
Hooray hooray I'm your silver lining
Hooray hooray but now I'm gold."
