Yes, its Miley Cyrus.
I believe that Cyrus is a great example of Stuart Hallâs audience reception theory. As active users, Hall believed that the audience attempts to read, interpret and make sense of the media in three different readings.
1)Preferred- the audience enjoys and produce a positive impression on the text.
2)Oppositional - the audience disagrees, rejects the ideas and shows negative opinions.
3)Negotiated - the user has mixed views; understands the good and bad the text highlights.
Similarly, Miley Cyrus in her recent music videos âWe Cant Stopâ and âWrecking ballâ that reached number 1 in UK charts; has caused huge controversy because of the sheer content within the videos. The video and song  âWrecking Ballâ has been taken literally by the video having Miley swinging on a wrecking ball, naked. This raised huge debates on how a video of such content could be created and exhibited to the public, especially with there being no age restrictions.(Watson, 2013)
- Preferred reading:
Some audience will believe that the song and video Miley made is an excellent and genius piece of Pop Art. She grew up in the music industry and became successful; she earned her success and deserves to be number one.Â
- Oppositional :
Other users will perceive Mileyâs music as a rubbish and auto tuned pop. The only reason she became famous and reached number one was because of her explicit and ridiculous music videos and new appearance.
- Negotiated reading:
The audience members will share both arguments. For example, some people honestly admitted that when they heard the music on the radio(the audio attached); they enjoyed it and believed that it was good Pop music . However, the release of the music video created a change in opinions, because it contained inappropriate content without age restrictions.Â
To conclude, Hall reception theory narrows the active audience model. It presents a respectful version of a readerâs response  to mass media.
[video] This video "If men were women" is an oppositional reading or counter-hegemonic reading. Oppositional readings are produced by those whose social position puts them into direct conflict with the preferred reading. In this case, video opposes Hegemonic masculinity, this concept suggests that thereâs the dominant social position of men, and the subordinate social position of women. It is interesting, how most of the people simply accept this idea as a natural thing, but if we just reverse positions and look at them from different perspective, then we will understand how absurd current situation is.Â
Hahaha I found the pictures of USA presidents funny! Also, there was this song by Beyoncé called 'if I were a boy' that demonstrates oppositional reading. I'm sure omarmonsef4 knows the song :)! http://youtu.be/AWpsOqh8q0M
Hundreds, after a dreadful fight for air, became unconscious and died where they lay -- a death of hideous torture with the frothing bubbles gurgling in their throats and the foul liquid welling up in their lungs.
According to the American Institute of Stress, compassion fatigue occurs due to exposure of traumatic events, such as pictures or videos of children suffering, people dying and blood spilt everywhere. If news reports, movies or any type of media text represent to their audience and expose too many horrifying âtextâ,they will experience compassion fatigue.
The text above is an example of what causes compassion fatigue. It uses a descriptive language to illustrate the Syrian conflict and the horrifying state people were in. As a result, the audience are emotionally disturbed and tend to feel depressed, hopeless and in some cases suffer from mental diseases. Alternatively, individuals will develop the capacity to resist these horrifying media text, hence ignore helping those who need help.
The Two Step Flow Communication Theory of Mass Communication was developed by Paul Lazarsfeld. He discovered that an audience is more likely to be influenced by other individuals than the mass media. these individuals are called "opinion leaders". the theory suggests that opinion leaders interpret mass media and share their interpretation/opinion to an audience. Unlike the hypodermic syringe model, the two step flow theory indicates that the audience are active participants in the communication process.
Oprah Winfrey is a great example of an opinion leader; her show is viewed by 8.5 billion people, which makes her very influential. The show is based on how she perceives an event/person, through giving her opinion. As a result, the audience actively participate and chose what to believe. On a statistical basis , any products or books she recommends would experience a positive spike in sales. She is truly an influential force.
Audience participation is growing and evolving as a new tool of brand activation and brand engagement. This tool works both as an entertainment for people and as a good beneficial marketing technique. For example, before premier of âCaptain America: The Winter Soldierâ fans were allowed to...
Wow.. Thats really cool!
The song âWingsâ by Macklemore is an excellent media piece which explains how the ideology of commodity fetishism works in modern society.
âCommodity fetishismâ or âreification' is a term used to describe the process of giving some significant meaning to a simple object. According to Marx, it reinforces Capitalism and further propagandize false needs.
Ideology of commodity fetishism is closely related to consumerism. It hides or âmasksâ the actual market relations and the value of products
We have been unconsciously taught into associating brands with certain values: success, uniqueness, etc. However, reality differs dramatically from advertising and world of media.
Another Macklemore song that highlight similar concepts and hidden messages is 'Thrift Shop'. This song was one of the biggest hits last year, which demonstrated rebellion and anti-capitalism. In the song he said: âThey be like, âOh, that Gucci â thatâs hella tightâ Iâm like, âYo â thatâs fifty dollars for a T-shirtâ Limited edition, letâs do some simple addition Fifty dollars for a T-shirt â thatâs just some ignorant bitch (shit) I call that getting swindled and pimped (shit) I call that getting tricked by a business" This a strong statement against the capitalist system that encourages consumption of expensive clothing. Which reiterates what ss0901 was saying 'propagandise false needs'. Anyway, if you have not heard the song. It's here. http://youtu.be/QK8mJJJvaes
The Hypodermic Needle Model suggests that media messages are directly received and fully accepted by a passive audience. This theory can be applied to the example of fascist propaganda during World War II. When the mass media had a powerful effect on people by repeating the same message over...
I really like the connection you made! It never crossed my mind ;D There was a famous psychology experiment by Stanley Milgram, i am sure you uniicoooorns know about it. To those who don't, the experiment showed someone in a position of authority ordering a participant to deliver a 400-volt electrical shock to another person, surprisingly the participant obeyed the order, even though it could have killed that person ! This experiment and the hypodermic syringe model can prove why normal people might do inhuman things to each other.
Fans can be mobilised to press producers and media corporations for change.
"WWE finally recognises that the fans want to see Daniel Bryan...." - quote from the video.
The sentence reiterates the power and control fans have over the media. As described in this article, WWE fans tend to 'compel' and alter the show, through their opinions and response they share. Famous TV programs like WWE, interacts with their audience to understand their fans' needs and try to satisfy & fulfil majority of their fans.
In my opinion, fans' comments and suggestions should be taken under a lot of consideration, because their needs reflect on the show's success.
'Fan' comes from the Modern Latin fanaticus, meaning "insanely but divinely inspired ". The picture above illustrates the percentage of a rugby match tweets received from women and men. As the pie chart shows number of rugby female fans in Scotland are higher than England; "Could this indicate that Scottish women are more passionate about rugby than their English counterparts?" This researcher, benefits sponsors and marketers, because it will help them understand and acknowledge the type of adverts their target audience will enjoy. So, in this case Scottish rugby sports channel will consider presenting men AND women adverts in breaks, because they practically have both genders watching. This emphasises on the impacts and power that fans have over industries and companies. However, more detailed research is required to understand the audience, but social insights can certainly contribute to the process of understanding an active audience.
I took this picture last year, and i will be using it for the media advertising task. So can you guess what is it about? :)
As you may know Dr Spock (Leonard Nimoy) died a few days ago. I started watching star trek when I was 11 years old and have watched every series and every film. Star Trek was an important show for a number of reasons, but I think the reason I remember most is that at a time when Russia was still the USSR, when many Australians still had very negative attitudes towards the Japanese from the war and Australiaâs attitude towards its own Aboriginal people reflected poorly on my country, Star Trek showed a vision of the future where a Russian, a black woman, a Japanese man, a white man and a literal alien all worked together to explore space and solve problems on other planets. A future where issues of race and religion were overcome by a desire for peace, scientific advancement and exploration. A vision where we had all worked out our problems and had united as a planet to go out into space and build not just a better world but a better galaxy. This vision was so important that when the black character Uhura thought of quitting, Dr Martin Luther King himself talked her out of it, because he knew you canât be what you canât see and what people saw on this show was too important to lose. This vision inspired people from the first black astronaut Mae Jemison, to Martin Cooper the inventor of the cell phone, to a little Australian boy growing up in Adelaide. Star Trek is evidence that the Media can play a positive influence in a society and promote ideas that make us and our world a better place. Live long and prosper indeed Dr Spock.
Emm, just to be clear. Keeping your birth year you mentioned during our very first class (1979) in mind, you were JUST 11 in 1990, 1 year after the fall of communism, Chinese zodiac year of snake, the year Goodfellas was released, when I was JUST 1 and was JUST only 7 years to go till ss0901 was born.
Your point Sultan :)?
