which is a theme throughout the whole movie and honestly one of my favourite details - miles feels constantly stressed under the expectations from his father, from his school, from everyone that wants him to be something so great, when all he wants to do is go back to a normal school and hang out with his friends
and his first essay is on the book great expectations, which heās clearly struggling with, and parallels to the fact that he has no idea what to do about the great expectations in his own life - the page is blank
but his art is his escape, it always has been, he does that in secret away from prying eyes, he hides it round the city, he draws in his notebooks, and when he turns this design into a mural, itās in abandoned tunnels where no one goes, with the help of his uncle aaron, who arguably had the same expectations and failed to live up to them - he makes his living killing people for kingpin, but he loves his nephew, and has no expectations for miles, heās just here to encourage him
which is where miles gets bitten by the spider, and gets even more expectations
not only does he have to live up to everything he had already, but now he has to be spiderman, and its such a legacy to follow, and he doesnāt know how
all the other spider people had such expectations for him, he hears them discussing it, and thatās not something he can live up to. heās not trying to do it his own way, heās trying to be the previous spiderman, and itās crushing him
and he fails that time, their great expectations are too much, he doesnāt have a solution. so they leave, expecting nothing from him anymore. and at the same time, he has the conversation with his dad through the door, where his dad apologises for putting such pressure on him, and says he just wants to see miles succeed, which he should in his own way, not by following others
itās his lowest point in the film but itās also the moment everything changes, because he loses all expectations
for the first time since becoming spiderman, heās back to that mural in the tunnel, doing things his own way, no expectations
and thatās where he finds his strength, not through what other people have done before, but through his own ideas, his own art, his own self expression
he spray paints over the spiderman suit because he canāt wear that as is, he has to make it his. and when heās on his own, without anyone elseās expectations, he turns out to be brilliant, and heās plenty capable not just of keeping up with the others, but outshining them, finding his own place where he can be himself and that can be what saves everyone
and it works, and now everyone follows his lead - he gives peter bās advice back to him. his dad helps him paint a mural. heās thriving in both aspects of his life
and then he turns in that essay because he knows how it ends now - with him doing it his own way
