My actual name is Samuel. I am 17 years old, turning 18 in just a handful of months. I am Venezuelan but was born in Spain, which as you may know, was recently rated as the safest country for LGBT+ folk to live based on legislation.

I would love to say that that can be the case forever. Unfortunately, our very socially progressive president has also turned out to be a massive scammer, and our presidential election is next year. All polls and predictions say that he will lose to his right-wing opponent, and that is a problem.

In 2022, Spain put out a set of laws that allow transgender people over the age of 18 to change their legal name and gender without having to undergo any surgeries or hormonal treatments. Some of the laws introduced had exploitable loopholes which have been used by criminals to get away with their crimes, and this has led the popular right-wing to announce they will “amend” the law.

However, they have made it abundantly clear that their idea of an “amendment” is an entire rewrite, removing legal protections for trans people and once again making it illegal to change your name and gender without surgery.

This is where my problem comes in.

My birthday is on October 1st. The elections are in April of next year. Name changes take a while to process in the system. The cost of changing my name is around 230€ Euros, money that I do not currently have and will not be given by my parents.

I need to raise the money by my birthday, so that very weekend I can immediately run to the courthouse and get my documents changed. If I don’t manage to change my name before the new party gets voted in and the law gets rewritten, I will spend another 4-8 years unable to escape my deadname that is associated with absolutely so much pain and such terrible times in my life. I do not want to go to university and still be trailing this horror behind me.

I know this is an incredibly selfish thing to ask, and there are thousands of trans men out there who are in much more precarious situations than I am, but if you have literally any money to spare, I am begging you, the tiniest amount would be so absolutely appreciated. The further I can get with donations, the less I will have to cover through more unsavoury means, and I really do not want to have to go into the industry so I can finance my new documents.

My dad works at Home Depot and this one customer came in trying to return a lawnmower that wouldn’t start. Another employee asked the customer if he had put any gas in it and the customer was outraged, yelling that they should have told him it needed gas (it was in the manual) and the employee told him “Well it doesn’t run on hopes and dreams, sir.” That pissed the guy off more so he called the manager all “Can you believe this guy!? There is a very specific kind of sadness in realizing your parents loved you, and still did not always know how to meet your emotional needs.

Because it is confusing. It would almost feel easier if there was no love there at all. But sometimes there was love. In the way they tried to protect you. In the sacrifices they made. In the ways they worried about you, cared for you, wanted a good life for you.

And at the same time, there were still things missing.

Maybe comfort did not come in the way you needed it to. Maybe your feelings were not always understood, or noticed, or handled gently. Maybe you learned to keep certain parts of yourself quiet because it felt easier than trying to explain them.

That kind of hurt is difficult because it does not always come from cruelty. Sometimes it comes from people who loved you deeply, but did not know how to emotionally connect in the ways you needed. People carrying their own wounds, limitations, fears, or ways of surviving.

And you are allowed to acknowledge both truths at once.

You are allowed to recognize their love and still grieve what you needed but did not receive. Those things do not cancel each other out.

Forgiveness, for a lot of people, is not pretending nothing hurt you. It is slowly accepting that someone can love you and still fall short of understanding you completely.

That does not make your pain dramatic. It does not make them monsters either. Sometimes it just means everyone was trying with the emotional tools they had, and some of those tools were not enough.

And I think many people quietly carry guilt for still feeling hurt by parents they know tried their best. But being loved imperfectly can still leave wounds. It makes sense that it affected you.

At the same time, you do not have to stay trapped only in anger forever either. Sometimes healing looks like understanding that your parents were human before they were parents. People shaped by their own experiences, their own upbringing, their own emotional gaps.

That understanding does not erase your feelings. It just softens the sharp edges around them a little.

You deserved emotional safety. You deserved gentleness. You deserved to feel understood, comforted, and emotionally close to the people raising you.

And if they could not fully give that to you, it is okay to mourn it.

But I hope you also know this: the love you needed is still something you can experience in your life. Through other people. Through chosen family. Through the way you learn to treat yourself now.

The story does not end at what you did or did not receive growing up.

You are still allowed softness after all of it 🤍

Oh no, worse than that. Sometimes you need 2 or even 3 people to help restrain a really hyper dog for something short like a blood draw and there's not a lot of room around a dog for 3 human bodies to fit so your face will be right by someone's butt or your knee might be in someone else's crotch. Or with a small squirmy dog where doc needs to listen to the heart but you need to hold it against your body there's a good chance the stethoscope-holding hand is going to hit your chest.

And sometimes you're holding a dog or cat for an exam and the owner is trying to comfort them by petting them and suddenly they're petting you too (they generally don't realize this)

Or when the owner doesn't hand you the small dog so you have to reach into their embrace for the dog and are basically guaranteed to accidently cop a feel.

"You can take him!" Or... you could put him on the table so I can get hold of him and not *you*????

-client with tiny yorkie tucked IN HER BRA and his foot got stuck and she absolutely could not get him out and he was scratching her and she started crying so yeah...I unhooked the dog's hock from her bra

-my tech was holding a big somewhat aggressive rottie who was, unfortunately, only actually handleable if the client was holding her head. client proceeded to fart. in my tech's face. I felt so bad

-too many cats that velcro onto their human or the tech when you try to examine them so you have to either examine them with their tiny needle claws dug into the human's shoulder (inevitably copping a feel) or having to peel the poor kitty off the person while getting in REAL close and often pulling clothing in very awkward ways

then there's the unfortunate times you need to provide canine sex ed to clients who are not breeders, have no interest in breeding, and had no idea that their neutered dogs could still have sexual reactions. this means I've had to:

-inform one client that his dog was, in fact, sucking himself off (I said it nicer than that; the client's response was, "Oh. oh I'm rather proud of him actually.");

-another that yes, prostate stimulation will cause erections when I was doing a rectal exam and she was really confused about that and then had the revelation about how anal penetration works for men in real time in the exam room;

-and just today, that yes, neutered male dogs will still hump other dogs and can in fact get erections and sometimes you need to lube those penises up and stuff them back in if they won't fix themselves or your dog needs to come in for urgent care. she sighed, looked at her husband, and said, "well, I guess we need to go buy some KY."

Vet at work just had an appointment where the owner had their 3 year old kid in the room too. Kiddo was very friendly but with no personal boundaries, frequently touching vet and tech while he was running around the room. Vet thought the kid was just leaning on her but when she looked behind her, he was basically pressing his face into her buttcrack through her pants. Vet left the room beet red and the tech in the room was laughing her ass off

Today a client held my hand, which i was currently using to restrain the dogs head during the exam. Sir. Please let go. My hand does NOT feel like your dog.

Today, while I was restraining a bitey little dog snugly against my chest the owner decided she wanted to hug him to comfort him. So she held him around his chest. Which was currently against my chest. So the back of her hand was squished between her dog and my boobs.

Later, she thanked me for being so gentle with her bitey dog and did so while placing her hand on the small of my back. And she kept it there. For an entire minute. While I was still restraining her dog.

Today while I was restraining a scared small dog the owner tried to reassure her dog by scratching the dog's chest. Which i was holding against my body. So I got some extremely awkward belly scritchies.

Today while restraining a small-ish dog who kept trying to back up out of my grip, the owner asked how she could help. I asked her to brace his rear end.

Which she did! She did do that, but with one hand and the other was more on his flank. Which was against my chest. And she was rubbing her fingers up and down his side to calm him so I got a very gentle, accidental tit massage.

But you know what, the dog stopped panicking so it was worth it.

An owner was holding up the front half of their very friendly, hyper labrador so I could look at a lump on the chest to play "nipple-tick-mass" . I had my hands near the front legs to part the hair and she death-gripped onto my arm.

"Ma'am? That's my arm. That's my arm? You have my arm? Can you let go that's my arm?"

Hey husband had to tell her that she had me and not the dog and she was so embarrassed but good natured about it.

But I'm also like... I naturally have very very little arm hair? My arm does not feel like the leg of a labrador? Why did she not go "hmmn, this textile doesn't seem like a dog texture"???

The misc goods shop had Thriller playing on the radio, and someone's kid was fully dancing to it in the passageway. It wasn't crowded at this time of the day, barely anyone else there but me and the kid's family, so it's not like he was bothering anyone. Party on, splendid little guy.

then it immediately comes to your own rescue, disabling impressive combat armor

it then is dead-set on killing your attacker who is already immobilized and harmless

clearly this is an incredibly competent and dangerous and powerful person

then miki tells you that it IS rin and you finally put it together that not only is this person competent in the field, but it is also calling all its own shots and has truly come here all on its own and volunteered its services to help and protect you without needing to be asked or ordered

so this person is incredibly competent, dangerous, powerful, AND kind, AND fiercely protective, AND reassuring, AND intelligent, AND selfless

and it's still coming up with great ideas and still thinking proactively about how it's going to face down or distract another combatbot as though there's no doubt in the world that it, still bleeding heavily, still unarmored and barely armed, is ready for another round with a terrifying machine that appears to be nothing BUT armor and weapons

so you step forward to help treat its injuries

and it jerks back a step with the single most frightened face you've ever seen, as though you had lifted your arm to inflict pain and it was helpless to stop you

behind you, even miki can read the devastating expression that's breaking your heart and says "abene won't hurt you, secunit"
